Education Ministry to roll out book vouchers for over 430,000 teachers soon
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — The Education Ministry (MOE) will soon finalise details and implement the book voucher initiative for all Education Service Officers (PPP) under its purview.
In a statement today, the ministry said it welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the initiative, which is expected to benefit over 430,000 teachers nationwide.
'MOE conveys its sincere appreciation to the Prime Minister for announcing the book voucher provision for all PPPs under the ministry during the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025.
'The announcement reflects his commitment to promoting a reading culture among the public, including educators,' the statement read.
In his speech at the event, Anwar said extending the book voucher initiative to over 400,000 teachers this year is part of the government's continued efforts to instil reading habits among Malaysians, especially school and university students.
He also said teachers have a great responsibility in imparting knowledge as well as encouraging students to develop a love for reading.
According to the MOE, the initiative aligns with its ongoing efforts to enhance reading habits across all levels and promote lifelong learning among educators. — Bernama

MACC freezes RM758m assets linked to Daim's widow, family in UK
PETALING JAYA, June 3 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has reportedly obtained a court order to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets belonging to Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, the widow of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, and her family in the United Kingdom. According to a report in New Straits Times the order was granted by Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid in an ex-parte proceeding today. The frozen assets were said to include two commercial buildings valued at £55,200,000, five luxury residences totalling £77,115,000 and a bank account owned by the Ilham Foundation. The order was reportedly issued after the court was satisfied that the assets were linked to suspected offences under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. Malay Mail has reached out to Na'imah's lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan for a response. In January last year, Daim claimed trial to a charge of failing to comply with a notice to declare his assets, which included several luxury vehicles, companies, and properties across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Kedah. In January 2024, Na'imah, 67, was charged in the Sessions Court with failing to comply with a notice to declare her assets, including Menara Ilham and several other properties in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. After Daim's death on November 13 that same year, the prosecution withdrew the charges and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him.

Trade truce no lifeline as China's factory activity slumps to lowest since 2022
BEIJING, June 3 — Chinese factory activity hit a more than two-year low in May, a closely watched survey showed Tuesday, as a detente in Beijing's trade war with Washington was offset by ongoing domestic problems in the world's number two economy. China and the United States agreed last month to temporarily halt most tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods, providing some much-needed relief to global markets. But the standoff has still piled further pressure on China's economy, which already faced a long-running real-estate crisis, sluggish consumption and high levels of local government debt. The Caixin Purchasing Managers' Index, independently calculated by S&P Global and Chinese business outlet Caixin, fell to 48.3 in May, well below the 50-point threshold separating expansion from contraction. The figure was the lowest since September 2022 and well below the 50.4 seen in April. It was also sharply off the 50.7 forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists. 'The surprisingly sharp fall... means that the survey data now point to a loss of economic momentum last month,' said Zichun Huang, China economist at Capital Economics. 'Domestic headwinds (are) more than offsetting the boost from the US-China trade truce,' she said. Wang Zhe, senior economist at Caixin Insight Group, said the slowdown was linked to 'sluggish external demand, which fell for a second straight month'. The country should target effective measures to boost domestic demand by improving household incomes, Wang added. Official data from the National Bureau of Statistics on Saturday showed a less severe contraction in the factory sector last month. While the NBS figure focuses on large state-owned industrial groups, the Caixin index primarily surveys small and medium-sized enterprises. But in a positive sign, a business sentiment survey by S&P Global and Caixin showed a slight improvement in May after a record drop in April, thanks to expectations of stronger foreign trade through the rest of the year. — AFP

‘Give him an Oscar': Singapore teen girl's dad slams ex-actor Ian Fang's 40-month jailing, plans civil suit over sexual abuse
SINGAPORE, June 3 — The father of the teenage girl sexually exploited by former actor Ian Fang has voiced his anger over the 40-month prison sentence handed to the 35-year-old, which did not include caning. 'Mark him for life. He marked my daughter for life,' the father said. 'Let the guy learn. Every time he takes off his clothes, people should see what he did.' Fang pleaded guilty in May to three counts of sexually penetrating a minor in 2024, when the victim was just 15, according to a report in Channel News Asia. The court has protected her identity, along with her family's. According to the father, Fang manipulated his daughter, using his fame and position as an acting teacher to gain her trust. 'He abused his power,' the father said. 'At that age, she was naive. He took advantage of that.' The offences occurred at Fang's home, a quarantine hotel, and a hospital. On nearly all nine occasions, no protection was used, leading to the girl contracting a sexually transmitted infection. Fang had befriended the girl's parents, even calling the father 'bro' while secretly engaging in a sexual relationship with their daughter. 'He played his acting role so well. Speechless. Really, give him an Oscar,' the father said. The truth only emerged when the girl sought treatment for her infection. Even then, she hesitated to reveal Fang's involvement until pressured by her mother. After a police report was filed in August 2024, Fang repeatedly harassed the victim with late-night calls, sometimes playing love songs or pretending to cry. The family intends to sue Fang for emotional and psychological damages. Their lawyer, Richard Siaw, confirmed civil proceedings would be pursued for harms beyond the criminal sentence. The father stressed they are not after money. 'Every cent will go to charity. But I want him to learn his lesson—since there was no caning.' Once a trusting family, they now monitor their daughter's movements closely. 'We gave her 100 per cent trust,' the father said. 'Now, we're just trying to make her happy again.' Fang's lawyer declined to comment on the civil case.
