Time of India24-05-2025

Kozhikode: Athiranni (Melastoma malabathricum) was declared as the flower and Menipponman (Ceyx erithaca) as the bird of Kozhikode district. The Malabar Rose (Pachliopta pandiyana) is the district's butterfly.
Eeyakam (Hopea erosa) was declared as the district tree. The Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) is the district's aquatic animal, the Pathala Poontharakan (Pangio bhujia) is the fish and the Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) is the animal.
This is the first people's biodiversity declaration in the state. Although a biodiversity declaration was conducted in Kasaragod under the guidance of an expert committee two years ago, this is the first time it was done through a public study.
The declaration was made after incorporating it into the district panchayat's 2024-25 annual plan, forming special expert committees for each category. Nominations were received from the public at the local level under the supervision of these committees and the leadership of Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) units, followed by detailed study and analysis.

More than 200 fruit trees to boost Salt Lake green cover

1 2 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will plant over 200 small and medium-sized fruit trees of different varieties across Salt Lake. BMC MMIC (Environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal said saplings of mango, rose apple, guava, sapota, and other trees will be planted at various locations. "The fruit trees will be planted along the roads and parks. Surveys are being carried out to find suitable locations for plantation. The aim is to increase greenery," Mondal said. It was earlier decided by the civic authorities that henceforth, only small and medium-sized flower and fruit trees would be planted instead of the taller varieties. This decision was taken to ensure better urban planning and safety, as a number of accidents had occurred recently due to tall trees getting uprooted and falling on the road. Two years ago, a 40-year-old died after succumbing to injuries a few days after a large dead tree fell on him inside a cluster at Salt Lake's Purbachal housing. Horticulture experts mentioned that the nature of the soil in Salt Lake is such that large trees, which have deep roots, should not be planted on the roadside boulevards as they cannot penetrate deep into the soil. "Instead, small or medium-sized palm trees should be considered," said an expert. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The civic authorities have started conducting a fresh tall tree health survey across Salt Lake. "Councillors are providing a list of tall trees that are in bad shape. Those that are dead or in a very damaged state will be uprooted, and other trees will be trimmed to reduce their weight so that they can properly stand. Trees showing signs of decay or structural weakness will either be treated by trimming or cutting off the damaged portions or be removed if necessary and replaced with suitable small or medium-sized trees," said a civic official. Residents are welcoming the civic body's move, saying that tall trees had fallen several times at different places, not only causing accidents but also damaging public utilities like cars and boundary walls of parks. BMC to appoint CDOs to supervise maintenance of city's public toilets

In a bid to enhance citizen participation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to appoint Community Development Officers (CDOs) to supervise and oversee the daily maintenance of Mumbai's community and public toilets. The official, appointed on a contractual basis, will conduct inspections in slum areas and work in close coordination with Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to assist them with their work ranging from training, cleaning of septic tanks to procurement of items such as sanitary pad vending machines. At present, there are nearly 700 Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) in Mumbai that are responsible for the operation and maintenance of community toilets across the city. Following a recent workshop convened with the CBOs, the civic solid waste management (SWM) department charted plans to recruit a dedicated CDO to work closely with the appointed CBOs. Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior BMC official said that this is the first time that the post of a CDO is being created in huge numbers. 'Previously, their numbers were half and the appointment happened at a central level,' said the official. The official will serve as a bridge between the community organisations and the civic body. On Thursday, the BMC issued a notice inviting applications for the post of CDO who will be appointed on contractual basis by the SWM's community development cell. The recruited officials will also be in charge of collecting data, submitting reports and supporting the department with correspondences, RTI responses and legal matters. Data furnished by the BMC shows that there are nearly 8,173 community/public toilets across the city, of which 3,110 fall under the BMC, 3,641 under MHADA, while 24 are maintained through CSR and the rest fall under pay and use as well as miscellaneous categories.
