LIVERPOOL, England - Five years after COVID-19 restrictions prevented Liverpool fans from celebrating at Anfield their team's first top flight title triumph in 30 years, Reds faithful wasted little time on Sunday getting the party started on another Premier League success.
With Anfield filled to the brim, Liverpool equalled Manchester United's record of 20 English top-flight titles with their 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur.
But it was after Alexis Mac Allister struck a blistering shot to put the Reds ahead for good in the 24th minute that the delirious crowd at the sun-drenched stadium erupted and they did not stop singing until well after the final whistle sounded.
The red-clad fans broke into chants of "Champions!" at numerous times during the second half, during which the match was stopped so a deflated Premier League trophy balloon could be removed from the pitch.
Liverpool players and staff on the touchline dashed onto the pitch the second the final whistle sounded then danced wildly to "One Kiss is All it Takes."
They lined up arm-in-arm in front of the Kop, team captain Virgil van Dijk with the game ball tucked under one arm, for a stirring rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" as stadium staff choked back tears.
Liverpool clinched the 2020 title under Juergen Klopp, 30 year's after the Reds' previous top-flight title in 1990, but many said the title should come with an asterisk since no fans were permitted in the stadium when Liverpool lifted the trophy.
Thousands of fans not fortunate to be inside Anfield on Sunday celebrated outside, setting off flares well before the game ended. REUTERS

While many of the items sold out in a flash, several used rackets were on sale for close to $6,000, while two that were bent and smashed beyond repair during the Dane's rare moments of rage on court were priced at more than $7,000. "I've been working behind the scenes with my sister Alma to create a space where you can get closer to my world," Rune said on social media. "To everyone who follows my journey, watches my matches, sends messages, and supports me – this is for you. Your support means everything. Launching this shop is my way of sharing a bit more of my journey with you." Part of the profits will support select charities close to Rune's heart, the website added, and the 22-year-old said he will put more items on sale soon. English singer Jessie J undergoes surgery following breast cancer diagnosis
English pop singer Jessie J has undergone surgery to treat breast cancer and is awaiting her results at home. The 37-year-old Flashlight singer wrote on Instagram on June 24: 'Blood warning. This post is some of the honest lows and highs of the last 48 hours. I will always show the good and hard bits of any journey I go through.' The sequence of photos she uploaded included selfies, as well as pictures of her boyfriend Chanan Colman, a Danish-Israeli professional basketball player, and their two-year-old son Sky. They are seen spending time together after her surgery. In one of the videos she recorded pre-surgery, she sings: 'Now I've been in the hospital for six and a half hours and I'm still waiting to go down to the theatre.' In another clip, Sky is seen sharing her hospital bed. Mother and son share a close moment together as the Bang Bang singer watches him eat. She also joked that the bottle of water and blood that was drained from her breasts post-surgery was like 'goji berry smoothie'. Referring to the bottle, she later said: 'Look at that, that is insane,' as the volume within had increased. The singer went public with her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis on June 4. In her June 24 post, she expressed her gratitude to her doctor, surgeon, the nurses who attended to her, as well as her family and friends who had visited her. The Domino hitmaker ended her caption with: 'Still hugging everyone going through something tough right now. We all got this!' Pat Cummins suggested Australia were due a top-order reset after their loss to South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final earlier this month and the skipper said their line-up to face West Indies shows they are looking to the future. Australia have brought in teenager Sam Konstas to open the batting with Usman Khawaja and added Josh Inglis to the line-up, while they will be without the dropped Marnus Labuschagne and injured veteran Steve Smith for a series which marks the start of both teams' new WTC cycle. Both Konstas and Inglis have played only two tests, the former opening the batting against India in Melbourne and Sydney last season, and the latter batting in the middle order in Sri Lanka earlier this year. Australia could lose as many as half a dozen test regulars to retirement after this year's Ashes series with the likes of Khawaja, Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon all in their mid to late 30s. When asked about the changes ahead of the first match beginning in Bridgetown later on Wednesday, Cummins told reporters: "You look forward to what the next couple of years are going to look like. "I think part of that's a keenness to get Sam and Josh into the squad, into the playing 11. You start looking at what the batting order might look like for the next couple of years. I think that's part of the reset. "And your goals change a little bit obviously. We're starting on zero points, so it's a bit of a mental reset. You block out the last couple of years and then start again." Cameron Green has retained his place at number three despite scoring only four runs and facing just five balls in the WTC final, with Cummins saying he viewed the 26-year-old all-rounder as a long-term option in the slot. "He had a test match where it obviously didn't go to plan," he added. "Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We're really happy with where his game's placed and I dare say we'll get a decent run of number three." SCARS Spin-bowling all-rounder Chase, who last played a test match in March 2023, will have his work cut out for him as he takes charge of a much-changed West Indies side who finished second bottom in the previous WTC cycle. "You can expect positive cricket from us," Chase, who succeeded Kraigg Brathwaite as captain in May, told reporters. "We're looking to play with a bit more flair and bring back that Caribbean style to the game, and we're looking forward to making the Caribbean nation proud. "It's still test cricket, so you still have to have some type of patience, so it'll (be on) the guys to mix their aggression with that patience." The sides last met in a two-test series in January 2024 which ended all square after West Indies claimed a shock eight-run victory in the second test in Brisbane - their first test win over Australia since 2003. "I hope there are some scars," Chase said. "If they're still thinking about that match going out there on Wednesday, that would be very good for us – that will be part of the job done for us."
