Dreams shattered and limbs broken: When tragedy trumped RCB's triumph

BENGALURU: This was supposed to be a Wednesday evening of celebration, of appreciation, of love received and reciprocated. Instead, it devolved into a tragedy of unspeakable proportions, burying Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden
IPL
success under a pall of unimaginable, heartbreaking gloom.
The scenes of jubilation that had spilled over from Tuesday night after RCB's six-run conquest of Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad suddenly assumed an entirely different hue outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Rajat Patidar and his men were to parade their spoils in front of their adoring, loyal-to-a-fault followers. Long before the team had even made its way to its hotel from the HAL Airport, thousands had gathered outside and around the franchise's home venue, screaming and shouting and waving red flags as anticipation of seeing their heroes in the flesh reached fever pitch.
As the cavalcade made its way through Cubbon Road around 3.15pm and towards the hotel that has been RCB's base for a few years now, the roars reached a crescendo, even though dark windows prevented those who had gathered from glimpsing Virat Kohli, clearly the man of the hour, and his mates. As it turned out, those dark windows turned out to be a portent of what was to come.
The sea of people that spilled over to Queen's Road jostled and pushed and shoved; those who had snagged an invite to the free-of-charge event impatiently willed the gates to be thrown open while the rest went searching for vantage points.

In the absence of any structured mechanism and with people flowing in all directions, it was almost a given that something had to give. That the extent of the tragedy would be of this horrific nature was beyond anyone's worst fears.
Scenes of chaos reigned around every entry point long before pockets of stampedes snuffed out dreams, hopes, and lives. Images of footwear strewn outside gates are seared in one's memory, a grim reminder of what had unfolded a few minutes previously when glee gave way to avoidable disaster.
Inside the packed venue – there were as many people in the stands as there would be for a match, and an equal number outside – people seemed oblivious to what had unfolded just metres away from them. There was no drop in the buzz of excitement, no indication that they even knew. When the players emerged on the balcony a little before 5.30pm to individually hold the trophy aloft, they were greeted with thunderous approbation.
And when Kohli grabbed a mic to answer a question, the roars threatened to bring the roof down. For a full five minutes, the darling of the masses couldn't get a word in, such was the cacophonous response to his presence.
Watching from the safe confines of the press box — how one managed to get there is a tale for another day —one couldn't help but find it all very jarring, unnerving, hard to stomach.
Sport is meant to be a celebration of the pursuit of excellence, if not perfection.
It is designed to unite people, in joy if the team/player one supports triumphs, or in sorrow if the result doesn't go to plan. It can't, must and should not have the power to uproot families and adversely change the lives of hundreds in the blink of an eye. Celebrations can go sour sometimes, but at this price? There was a singular lack of emergency preparedness, and this isn't being wise after the event.
To witness people running with the unconscious in their arms because there were no ambulances around – how does one even reconcile to that? When Bengaluru FC won their first I-League title in April 2014, they embarked on an open-top parade to the Sree Kanteerava Stadium without incident. Obviously, fewer people lined up to applaud their accomplishment, nor were they invited by political bigwigs for a photo op. Cricket, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, compel greater attention and approbation. But who would have bargained for the city's most famous sporting success turning into one of its worst nightmares?

"This was very difficult": Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran retires from international cricket at 29
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran surprised the world on Tuesday by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The 29-year-old, who recently dazzled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants with explosive performances, described retiring from the international circuit as 'difficult'. 'To the cricket public, after much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.' Pooran's decision comes days after he requested Cricket West Indies not to consider him for their ongoing white-ball tour of England. With over eight months left before the T20 World Cup 2026 kicks off in India and Sri Lanka, Pooran's decision serves as a massive setback for the 2016 winners. Since bursting onto the international scene in 2016, Pooran featured in 106 T20Is and 61 ODIs, garnering more than 4,258 runs across both formats. He mustered up 2,275 in the shortest format of cricket, averaging 26.14 at 136.39. While in the 50-over cricket, he tallied 1,983 runs at 39.66 while maintaining a strike rate of 99.15, laced with three centuries and 11 fifties. 'To the fans - thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates - thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all,' he said. Pooran had his last dance with the Men in Maroon during their encounter against Bangladesh at Kingstown. Bangladesh ousted the Caribbean giants with a comprehensive 80-run victory. 'Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead. With all my heart, Nicky P,' he concluded. (ANI)

Made a scapegoat: Suspended Bengaluru cop alleges in plea to tribunal
Suspended Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash has alleged that he is being 'made a scapegoat' in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede case and termed the Karnataka government's suspension order against him 'arbitrary' and 'premature'.In a petition filed before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), accessed by India Today, Vikash contends that the disciplinary action was taken without an enquiry or an opportunity to be officer, in his petition, said that the government order itself was 'eloquently silent' on how the tragedy can be attributed to him, while noting that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) were responsible for impulsively inviting crowds without tickets or passes. 'It begs belief as to how the applicant herein can be made a scapegoat when the government order itself highlights that the entire issue arose due to the callous and impulsive invitation of the RCB and KSCA,' the petition stated. 'That any event of the scale as the celebrations envisaged requires planning and the very minimum time to plan.'Vikash is among the several senior police officials suspended by the Karnataka government after the deadly stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 in which 11 died and over 50 others were plea also pointed out that there was barely 12 hours between RCB lifting the IPL trophy and the celebrations, leaving no time for the police to make adequate questioned how he could be blamed when there was 'hardly 12 hours time' for planning such a large-scale public further argues that the June 5 suspension order was issued without considering alternative disciplinary steps, such as a transfer or departmental inquiry, and before the government-ordered magisterial probe could conclude. The petition describes the action as a 'knee-jerk reaction to public pressure', stating that the order is a 'cyclostyled and mechanical' decision lacking independent evaluation of the officer's role.'The applicant has an unblemished service record,' the petition claims, adding that the move has caused 'irreparable harm' to his career and reputation. It also cites past instances where officers were not suspended despite similar tragedies, arguing that the present action is discriminatory and legally unsustainable. IN THIS STORY#Bengaluru

India wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant broke the stadium's roof with a monstrous six during a practice session ahead of the all-important Test series with England. India and England are set to lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning from June 20. Ahead of the all-important series, team India is training hard for the crucial encounter as they begin their new era in the practice session, Pant was seen at his explosive best as he played some big shots against the spinners. The wicketkeeper batter even went on to smash Washington Sundar for a massive six, which landed on the roof of the stadium and left it the video here:- PANT BROKE THE ROOF WITH A SIX...!!! [Espn Cricinfo]- RISHABH PANT IS GEARING UP FOR THE TEST SERIES AGAINST ENGLAND.- RISHABH PANT IS IN GREAT TOUCH WITH BAT, GUD TO SEE HIM.#Rishabhpant#ENGvsIND#rinkusingh#RohitSharma#INDvsAUS# Nitesh Prajapati (@itsmenitesh004) June 9, 2025 Pant has been appointed as India's new vice-captain and will act as a deputy to Shubman Gill. His form will be extremely crucial for the team's success in the upcoming season, given his past performances in England. The southpaw has accumulated 556 runs from 17 innings in England at an average of 32.70 with two centuries and as many wicketkeeper batter wasn't in the best of forms in the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) as he accumulated just 269 runs from 13 innings at an average of 24.45 with one hundred and as many fifties. After a horrendous run in the first 12 innings, Pant finally found some form in the last league fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).He scored a breathtaking 118* off 61 balls, smashing 11 fours and eight sixes, guiding Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a massive score of 227/3. However, his efforts ended in a losing cause with Jitesh Sharma taking RCB over the line with his remarkable knock of 85* (33).Hence, Pant did manage to end IPL well after enduring poor form, which gives a positive sign for India going forward. Pant scored a century in the last Test India played in England in 2022, playing an innings of 146 (111) to rescue his team from a precarious position of 98/5.
