Man to appear in court for alleged axe killing of partner
A 41-year-old man will appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 14 May for allegedly murdering the mother of his children in Schoemansdal.
The suspect faces a charge of murder following a brutal attack on his 31-year-old partner.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, confirmed that the horrific incident occurred in Schoemansdal on Monday, 12 May 2025, when the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with an axe following a heated argument.
'The suspect and the 31-year-old victim had a heated argument. He allegedly attacked her with an axe and caused fatal injuries,' said Ndubane.
The suspect reportedly left the woman, a mother of two, in the street after assaulting her and inflicting fatal injuries.
'After the attack, the suspect allegedly left her lifeless body in the street,' added Ndubane.
South African Police Services (SAPS) responded to the scene, and a swift investigation led them to arrest the suspect.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, condemned the act.
He urged members of the community to seek help when experiencing domestic or relationship problems rather than resorting to violence.
Mkhwanazi emphasised that gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) remain a serious threat to safety and the well being of women and children.

However, the police requested that they wait until the area was cleared to avoid further chaos. Major-General Bongani Maqashalala, deputy police commissioner for the detection division, confirmed that two gunmen had stormed a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) office, killing four men and injuring three others. 'One of the three injured is a commuter. We believe the suspects used high-calibre firearms, as evidenced by the crime scene. 'Codeta has a permit to operate in Somerset West but does not have a taxi rank there. We believe this is causing tension with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata),' he said. The situation is being monitored by the Department of Mobility. The police have announced a reward of R100,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge explained that the association had previously written to the MEC of Mobility on August 29, 2024, notifying them of partial services on the M18 route, as Cata operators had prohibited their return with passengers. 'Despite a notice issued on June 3, 2025, to resume operations, upon doing so, Cata operators blocked legal operations, leading to a meeting scheduled for next week. Unfortunately, the dispute escalated into violence, resulting in this tragic loss of life.' Codeta has called on the Western Cape government to strengthen the regulatory framework to protect both taxi operators and commuters. They also urged for enhanced safety measures to prevent further incidents. The shooting occurred just across the road from the Mfuleni satellite police station. 'The conduct of the attackers showed this was no random act; it was planned. The police station was operational at the time, and we had been monitoring the Somerset West route. This remains one of the motives we are investigating,' Maqashalala added. In response, police have deployed additional officers around taxi ranks and have identified potential threats. Maqashalala also urged taxi association members to remain calm. 'We request their cooperation, and we are scheduled to meet with the Department of Mobility. To the community, we ask that they come forward with any information that could assist us in the investigation.' Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais expressed deep concern over the violence. 'It is devastating to see such incidents in our communities. We've been working closely with the SAPS and LEAP services to apprehend the perpetrators and stabilise the industry. The illegal firearms on our streets are also a major concern. We all know that the SAPS is understaffed, and that is why we have been calling for the devolution of policing powers to the province."

Urgent calls for better vetting in SAPS amid South Africa's sexual violence crisis
Recent revelations have cast a spotlight on the screening processes of state entities responsible for safeguarding South Africa's vulnerable populations. Foremost among these, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is facing intense criticism due to what has been described as inadequate screening procedures for its personnel. Build One South Africa (BOSA) has flagged alarming statistics: from SAPS's over 180,000 members, a mere 245 — or 0.14% — have been screened against the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO). This information comes against the backdrop of an ongoing epidemic of sexual violence in South Africa, with over 42,700 rapes reported in the 2023/24 financial year alone. As the nation grapples with this crisis, BOSA's spokesperson, Roger Solomon, did not mince words when he stated, 'South Africans cannot be expected to trust law enforcement to protect them from sexual violence when SAPS has failed to even vet its own officers.' BOSA's recommendations are urgent and clear. They are demanding mandatory NRSO screenings for all SAPS employees within the next three months, proposing that such vetting be included in recruitment, promotions, and disciplinary measures. Since 2024, the DSD has implemented a NRSO vetting procedure for all new hires working with children. Out of 69 cases submitted for screening, 62 have returned clear, with others still under review. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has reported a comprehensive screening process for its staff. Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond stated that 10,245 educators, 3,019 support staff, and 768 administrative personnel have undergone vetting against the NRSO. While the systems are largely in place, some documents are still pending to meet the Department of Justice's standards. The process involves obtaining a police clearance certificate from SAPS, which can take anywhere from one to four months, potentially causing delays. Additionally, the WCED employs rigorous checks during recruitment, including identity verification, criminal profiles, qualifications, and screening against the National Child Protection Register from the DSD. However, alongside these measures, troubling reports persist. ‘She was with boyfriend': Teen girl charged with perjury after false rape claim while hitchhiking

In the teenager's case, she alleged that she was raped while hitchhiking earlier this week. Police launched a manhunt for two men who were apparently travelling in a black Volkswagen Polo. In an update on Friday, provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said investigations have revealed that the young woman was fabricating the entire story. 'The family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit immediately launched an investigation into the case, which had attracted significant public attention,' said Ndubane. 'However, during the course of their investigation, it was established that no rape had occurred. The girl eventually confessed that she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, had chosen to lie about being raped.' In her original report to the police, the teenager alleged that she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom to Lydenburg when a black Volkswagen Polo 'with two male occupants speaking English' offered her a lift. 'Upon regaining consciousness, she claimed the passenger was raping her and later offered her money, which she refused,' said Ndubane. Meanwhile, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed deep disappointment over the false report. Mkhwanazi issued a stern warning to community members on the repercussions of making false statements to the police. 'We will not show mercy to individuals who open false cases. The crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024/2025 indicate an increase in sexual offences. It is therefore extremely concerning and disheartening when people abuse the system by reporting fake cases,' he said.
