Michael van Gerwen comes from behind to beat Niko Springer at European Trophy
Michael van Gerwen fought back to avoid an upset as he edged past Germany's Niko Springer in the second round of the European Trophy in Gottingen.
Having been 3-0 and 5-3 down, two-time champion Van Gerwen turned things around to triumph 6-5 and will now face Gian van Veen – a 6-4 victor over Josh Rock – in the last 16.
He said in quotes on pdc.tv: 'We all know how good Niko Springer is and I had to fight really hard.
'I had to battle and that gives me energy – but I think there's a lot more in the tank. I'm going to make sure I keep my focus.'
Luke Humphries saw off Boris Krcmar 6-4 after the Croatian battled back from 3-0 down to draw level.
World number one Humphries said: 'I thought he played really well and I had to pull out some of my best stuff.
'I'm playing OK but I'm not getting results. It wasn't my best performance but I love the European Tour – I really feel up for it this weekend, I really want to prove something to myself and go on a decent run.'
Humphries' third round opponent is Michael Smith, who defeated Ricardo Pietreczko 6-2.
German number one Martin Schindler powered past Jonny Clayton 6-1, and Jermaine Wattimena recorded 111.07, the second-highest average of his career, as he beat Chris Dobey 6-4.
Those making safe progress also included Rob Cross, Dave Chisnall, Gerwyn Price, Nathan Aspinall and Gary Anderson, victors over Andrew Gilding, Ricky Evans, Ryan Searle, Ritchie Edhouse and Luke Woodhouse respectively.
As well as Clayton, Dobey and Rock, Peter Wright was among the seeds bowing out, losing 6-4 to Mike De Decker.

Thomas Tuchel ‘impatient' for improvement with England
Tuchel will take charge of his fourth England game at the City Ground in Nottingham, where he will look to keep up his 100 per cent winning record since taking over as head coach in January. 'I didn't like the last 10 minutes. We didn't play seriously enough to win it in the end and what we needed to do in a World Cup qualifier. 'Everything I say here I say to the players – why should I sugar coat? There is no harm done, we can have criticism and I believe a group of players in football can speak honestly to each other. I always include myself in that – now it's on us to do better. 'There will be some changes, I won't let you know how many but there will be. We want to reward players who kept their level up. We will see some fresh legs, new faces.' One player who has not featured yet under Tuchel is Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal winger missed the German's first camp in March through injury and was not included in the squad on Saturday because he had only completed one full training session during the week. Why Jude Bellingham missed England training ahead of Senegal friendly
Jude Bellingham was the only England player to miss training on Monday ahead of their international friendly against Senegal. The Three Lions maintained their 100 per cent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 win away to Andorra. Their 'boring' and uninspiring performance left a lot to be desired however, with Thomas Tuchel looking for major improvement on Tuesday night when they take on Senegal. In his pre-match press conference, Tuchel hinted he would heavily rotate his side and said he had no new injury issues to worry about. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins had pulled out of the squad before the Andorra game 'as a precaution due to a minor injury'. Arsenal struggle for breakthrough in latest Benjamin Sesko talks with RB Leipzig
Arsenal's hunt for a new striker continues and talks with RB Leipzig over a move for Benjamin Sesko have not yielded much progress, according to reports. The Gunners were left very short up front last season after injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, with midfielder Mikel Merino filling in as a centre-forward. It is not a situation they want to find themselves in again and a new striker is top of the shopping list at the Emirates. Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres is of interest, while they made a move for Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins in January, but Sesko may now have emerged as the number one choice. Talks began last month between the English and German clubs, with Leipzig setting out their position of being open to sell but only at around £70m. The Evening Standard reports that there have now been fresh talks between the clubs but little has changed, with Leipzig not to be talked down from their £70m valuation of the 22-year-old. With significant interest in Gyokeres from the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Napoli, Atletico Madrid and Al Hilal, the Swede is likely going to cost a similar amount this summer. Sesko's goal-scoring credentials don't quite match those of Gyokeres, although he has been playing in a very different league, but he does have age on his side. The Slovenia international only turned 22 last month, while Gyokeres celebrated his 27th birthday this month. Arsenal also appear to have a much clearer run at Sesko, with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea very loosely linked with him, but the race for his signature nowhere near as competitive as that for Gyokeres. Despite their disastrous season last time round, Manchester United appear to be leading the race to sign Gyokeres. More Trending The Swede has reportedly rejected the idea of moving to the Saudi Pro League with Al Hilal and now linking back up with his former boss at Sporting, Ruben Amorim, is a distinct possibilty. The Red Devils could complete a complete revamp of their forward line, having already confirmed a deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while they are also working on a move for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Sesko, then, looks the likelier signing at this point but Arsenal will have to cough up the £70m that RB Leipzig are asking for. When asked about his future last month, Sesko said: 'We'll see what happens. It's open, anything can happen.' It's been quite a tough season for Leipzig, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They've been struggling, which reflects on his output, but he's still been one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Havertz, he's not at that level. In particular, his passing will need to get a lot better in a side like Arsenal. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner and offers Arsenal something completely different.
