Perak govt partners with Wildlife Department to address growing human-elephant conflicts
IPOH: The Perak state government will collaborate with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to tackle the increasing number of human-elephant conflicts, particularly incidents involving elephants crossing highways, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The Mentri Besar said recent observations suggest changes in elephant behaviour.
'We have seen elephants crossing, especially the East-West highways, in large groups, and something must be prompting this.
'We need to study their behaviour more closely to understand what's going on,' said the Mentri Besar after attending the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) 'Majlis Ramah Mesra' event at a hotel here on Thursday (May 22).
Saarani said Perhilitan would investigate the cause and propose appropriate measures.
He cited a past incident during the development of the Agropolitan Gandah project, where elephants frequently disturbed newly planted rubber trees.
'Eventually, we allocated a specific area just for the elephants to feed and roam. Once they had that space, they no longer came into conflict with the plantation.
'That experience taught us the importance of understanding and adapting to wildlife behaviour,' he said.
Saarani stated that it was important to investigate whether elephants were crossing the Gerik-Jeli stretch more frequently after the recent accident involving a baby elephant, or if there are other reasons.
'I want to remind road users, especially in known wildlife corridors, to be extra cautious. These are traditional elephant routes.
'I have tasked state executive councillor Teh Kok Lim to initiate talks with Perhilitan to identify the cause and effective solutions.
'We are looking into the matter, especially now that the elephants are crossing roads in larger groups,' he added.
On May 11, a five-year-old elephant was killed after it was struck by a lorry along KM80 of the highway.
An adult elephant, believed to be the mother, then 'attacked' the lorry, damaging the front of the vehicle, in its attempt to free the calf pinned by the vehicle.
On May 20, a herd of wild elephants damaged a car with a 39-year-old man inside at KM11 on the same highway.

Perak vape ban decision pending further talks, says MB
IPOH: A decision on whether to ban vape products in Perak has yet to be made pending further discussions, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. While the state executive council meeting briefly raised the matter, the Perak Mentri Besar said a more in-depth review is still required. 'A study needs to be conducted before any firm decision can be made. 'I have spoken to the state health committee chairman A. Sivanesan about it, but there are several matters that must be carefully considered. 'Among the factors being weighed are public health concerns and the potential impact on local vape traders,' he said after launching two strategic plans for the state here yesterday. On May 23, Saarani said that Perak is ready to consider the proposal to ban the sale of vape products and that he would try to bring the matter to the exco meeting the following week. Saarani added in the press conference that he had also received a request from the operators' (vape) association to discuss the matter. 'These are issues that need to be thoroughly examined. 'So any move to regulate or ban vape sales must take into account both health implications and economic effects on traders.' Saarani said with Sivanesan tasked with reviewing the matter from both a health and business impact perspective, a final decision will be made once all considerations are fully explored. 'I hope the matter will be tabled at the exco meeting as soon as possible,' he said. Earlier on at the event, Saarani said the state marked a new milestone with the launch of two strategic plans aimed at transforming Perak into an inclusive, sustainable and competitive smart state driven by the digital economy. The Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and the Perak State Smart City Blueprint 2040, Saarani said, are designed to strengthen digital infrastructure, empower human capital, and stimulate innovation and technology investment. He said the simultaneous launch of both plans marks a key step towards building a more efficient, resilient and high-quality urban environment, with a positive impact on Perak's socio-economic development. 'We are now in an era of rapid digital transformation, and if we act too slowly, we will be left behind. That is why the digital economy agenda has been identified as one of the nine main agendas under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan. 'Our goal is clear: to build an inclusive, resilient and sustainable economy.'

Perak needs further study on use of vapes, e-cigarettes
Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad said the study will cover health concerns and the potential impact of a ban on traders and other stakeholders. IPOH : The Perak government is looking into the possibility of banning the sale of vapes and electronic cigarettes in the state. Menteri besar Saarani Mohamad said this was discussed at a recent state executive council meeting, but further study is needed before a decision can be made. He said state human resources, health, Indian community affairs and integration committee chairman A Sivanesan has been tasked with leading the review. 'I've spoken to Sivanesan as this requires a thorough health assessment. However, we must also consider other factors,' he said at a press conference after launching the Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and Perak Smart Cities Blueprint 2040 today. Saarani said the state has received a request for a meeting from the vape traders' association, which will also be taken into account. The findings of the review, which will cover health concerns and the potential impact on traders and other stakeholders, are expected to be presented at the next exco meeting. Saarani had earlier said a decision on the vape ban was expected at the May 28 exco meeting. Several other state governments have banned vape sales or are considering it.
