Let's face it, between subway delays, Uber surge pricing, and the daily cardio workout that is hailing a cab in Midtown (not to mention the expense!), New Yorkers are officially over it.
It might be time for you to join the e-bike community. Now, we've already tested the best electric scooters out there, but it's not everyone's cup of tea, especially if you want to feel more secure when riding through potholes and traffic. Learn everything there is to know about e-bikes and where to buy them below.

If you enjoy dodging gridlock on the way to the office or coasting your way in through a park route to the office, e-bikes are quickly becoming the city's most stylish (and secretly practical) mode of transportation. They're fast, quiet, and cost-efficient once you count in how much it costs to maintain a car, insurance and gasoline, or pay for a monthly transit card.
Before you swipe your credit card on the best e-bikes out there, there are a few things to keep in mind. Not all e-bikes are created equal; what's perfect for a weekend cruise along the Santa Monica boardwalk might fall short on the streets of Fifth Avenue.
Some riders worry about range anxiety, others need a bike that's easy to store, and some want big, flat tires to conquer rugged terrain. Whatever your riding style or needs, we've got an e-bike that's ready to roll with you.

New York Post Review: 'Riding through streets battered by salt, heavy traffic, and relentless wear and tear, I felt surprisingly secure on the Aventon Level 3 Commuter. Even hitting potholes at 20 miles per hour, the bike's suspension seat took on the impact, keeping the ride smooth and stable. No jolts, no bounce, just a calm, confident cruise that eased my worries about wiping out on rough city pavement.

Besides feeling secure, the Level 3 offers an easier ride with pedal assist to suit your pace and preference. It's a smart choice for anyone who wants to commute in comfort while cutting down on emissions or on physical effort. After all, showing up to work drenched in sweat isn't exactly a great look, and Aventon clearly understands that, which is why it has made life so much easier.

If you're in the market for a fast e-bike, it's essential to consider your city's regulations. Most e-bikes are limited to a top speed of 28 miles per hour, as per Class regulations, which you can learn more about in our detailed article on everything to know about e-bikes. Bikes that exceed this speed, such as certain models from Yamaha, would be classified as motorcycles.
For safety reasons, we're only recommending e-bikes that reach the fastest speeds allowed within regulations. Most e-bikes top out at 20 miles per hour, but the Radster pushes that limit with a top speed of 28 miles per hour and keeps with regulations.
Designed for all-weather riding, this e-bike is tough enough for rough terrain and built to last. It also offers peace of mind when it comes to theft protection, just lock it with a security code on the controls or use the included fob for quick access.
Additionally, the rear of the bike features a rack that can carry personal items or even a child, making it versatile for daily use.

Despite its compact build, it supports up to 330 pounds and features a powerful 1,000-watt peak motor for a strong, steady ride. You'll feel comfortable with the wide tires for uneven terrain, so overall, we found this bike to be our top winner in the foldable category.

How we tested
Emma Sutton-Williams
We didn't take every e-bike on the market for a joyride through Manhattan. But we did personally test one standout, the Aventon Level 3 Commuter. See our full review here.
We rode it straight into Times Square, then cruised up to Central Park, weaving through traffic, potholes, and the occasional confused tourist. We pushed the Aventon across different assist modes, tested its e-bike battery range, braking power, comfort level, and just how fast it could actually go.
As for the other bikes featured in this guide? We did a deep dive into e-bike reviews, user feedback, spec sheets, and expert roundups. We compared motors, frames, features, e-bike accessories, and prices to help you figure out what's legit—and what's better left in the 'wish' section of your shopping cart.
Whether you're eyeing the fastest e-bike on the road, a versatile folding e-bike, or one of the more affordable options in the cheap e-bikes category, we read the fine print so you don't have to.
FAQ
Are fat tire e-bikes worth it?
If your idea of a bike path includes sand, snow, or questionable city streets, a fat-tire e-bike offers killer stability and comfort. I'd say 100%, it might make the difference between death and life when you hit a bump and fall into traffic. Wider tires give peace of mind and a smoother ride. They're also great for larger riders or anyone who wants to feel extra grounded.
Can I find a good e-bike on a budget?
You can! Less expensive e-bikes that don't fall apart after three rides exist; you just have to know where to find them. We focused on models with reliable e-bike motors, decent battery life, and good warranty coverage. Other great places to look are Walmart, Amazon and Target.
How long does an e-bike battery last?
A quality e-bike battery typically lasts between 3 to 9 years, depending on how often and how well it's used. Factors like battery type, riding habits, terrain, and maintenance all play a role in its lifespan. According to Tom Sweeny, Affiliate Marketing Specialist from Aventon, it's important to remember that all bikes, including e-bikes, need regular maintenance from time to time, so it matters greatly how well you take care of them and how often you use them.
To help extend your battery's life, avoid letting it fully drain regularly, keep it away from extreme temperatures, and store it indoors when not in use. Regularly charging the battery even when it's not in use and keeping it clean and dry can also help maintain its performance over time.
What motor size do I need?
Commuters can get by with a 250-watt motor, but for real power, especially uphill, you'll want 500 watts or more. The Aventon Level 3 Commuter, for example, packs a 500-watt motor that makes climbing or coasting feel like cheating (in a good way).

Uber launches senior accounts to simplify rides for older adults

Uber is making it easier for older adults to take rides with the nationwide launch of senior accounts. Why it matters: Nearly 1 in 6 people globally will be 60 or older by 2030, the World Health Organization estimates. "Transportation is one of the biggest barriers to independence as people age," Briana Gilmore, Uber head of public policy, accessibility and underserved communities, told Axios. "For most older adults, they really struggle with independent mobility." Competitor Lyft launched its Lyft Silver feature nationwide for seniors in May. The big picture: A 2020 study by researchers with the CDC and the University of Chicago found ride-hailing apps could benefit older people, especially those facing cognitive decline that makes driving less safe. "Ride share services may offer a promising alternative to driving for older adults and may help to address negative health consequences associated with driving cessation," researchers wrote. The intrigue: Uber's new features also help seniors' family members keep track of their loved ones and book rides for them more easily. "We wanted to create more options for families, especially for family organizers, who are often in that sandwich generation with teens on one end and older family members on the other," Gilmore said. Uber senior accounts available Wednesday Zoom in: Uber started researching senior accounts in summer 2024 when launching teen accounts, Gilmore said. Senior accounts are a simplified ride-hailing experience designed for older adults with larger text, easy-to-follow directions and fewer buttons. Users can save places for quick access to frequent destinations and pay with a personal card, a family member's card or a Medicare Flex card for eligible medical rides. Family organizers can help book rides for the senior account holder and contact the driver if needed. Family members can get trip updates and follow rides in real time. Setting up senior accounts: A family member invites the older adult to join their Family profile from the Uber app. The senior receives a text to download the app and sign up. They can then request rides themselves or get help from family when needed. Uber simple mode State of play: For older adults who prefer to ride independently, Uber is also launching "simple mode," which offers the same streamlined experience as senior accounts without a Family profile. The Simple mode feature can be found in the account section of the app where there's the option to turn it on. The simplified app was piloted in Phoenix and Orlando in May. What's next: The senior features launch Wednesday, June 4 in the U.S. and then will expand to other countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, France and South Africa.

Uber's senior accounts, with larger typeface and fewer buttons, are now widely available

Last month, Uber started testing new accounts for senior citizens, with a larger typeface, fewer buttons, and easier-to-follow instructions. Now, the company is ready to roll out its new senior accounts to the wider world. Starting today, Uber's senior accounts will be available to everyone in the US, as well as select areas in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, France, and South Africa. The company sees senior accounts as a necessary product in a world where one out of six people will be 60 years old or over by 2030. And it's an acknowledgement that more seniors are using technology that often wasn't built with their demographic in mind. The new senior accounts will appear as part of Uber's family profile feature that also includes teen accounts. In addition to a larger font and a more streamlined design, the accounts also include saved destinations for easy ride requests and expanded payment options for customers who want to use a Medicare flex card. Seniors can also designate a family member or caregiver who can book rides, change settings, and contact drivers if need be. And they can opt into sharing their location so the aforementioned caregivers and family members can track their movements. Customers who want the enhanced experience — larger font, reduced complexity, and clearer navigation — but aren't linked to a family account can also turn on the app's Simple Mode in the Account section. This isn't the first time that Uber has updated its product to better serve older customers. The company experimented with using a 1-800 number for ride requests in early 2020, but that pilot was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Uber recently rolled out a new number — 1-833-USE-UBER — that is mostly aimed at older customers who prefer a toll-free number instead of using an app. Uber's push to make its core ridehail service more accessible for older adults coincides with Lyft's recent launch of 'Lyft Silver' accounts for older customers. Lyft's approach is similar to Uber's, insofar as the accounts include a larger typeface and a simplified design. But Lyft also has more accessible vehicles and customer service support staffed with actual human employees.

Uber now offers a streamlined app for seniors, complete with flexible payment options

Uber just announced dedicated account profiles for senior citizens, bringing a streamlined app design and features aimed at older adults. This is part of the pre-existing "family profile" feature that also allows for teen accounts . As for these senior accounts, the biggest draw is the design. The company promises "larger text, fewer steps and easy-to-follow screens." To that end, there are fewer buttons and larger text throughout. This should make it easier for seniors, or anyone with minor eyesight issues, to book rides. Loved ones and caregivers can book rides on behalf of the account holder. They can also help with stuff like adjusting payment methods and checking in during trips. Family members can track rides in real time or receive text updates upon arrival. In the case of an emergency, the app offers the ability for caregivers to contact the driver. Frequent destinations, such as the doctor's office, can be stored for easy access. There are even some unique payment options here, like the ability to accept Medicare Flex. If older adults don't have access to a family profile, they can still experience a streamlined version of the app via the platform's Simple mode. This provides the same interface, with larger text and easier navigation. Rival Lyft recently introduced a similar suite of features, called Lyft Silver . However, Lyft's service will match older riders with cars that are easier to get in and out of, which is something Uber doesn't seem to be offering at this moment. Senior accounts on Uber are rolling out now throughout the US, with global availability coming at a later date.
