Matildas ship late goal in draw with Slovenia

Yahooa day ago

A 91st-minute strike from Mirjam Kastelec has earned Slovenia a 1-1 draw with the Matildas in Perth, denying Joe Montemurro two wins from two games as Australian coach and spoiling an improved performance from the hosts.
After a scoreless opening half at HBF Park on Sunday evening, the Australians secured a deserved breakthrough five minutes after the break when Remy Seimsen set Ellie Carpenter up to float a cutback to Michelle Heyman, who placed a side-footed volley into the net.
But a late flurry from the Slovenians was rewarded a minute into added time when an effort from Naja Poje Mihelic bounced off the post and back into the path of fellow substitute Kastelec, who slid in front of a desperately retreating Australian defence to fire home.
It dampened a performance from the Australians that showed signs of improvement as they continue to adapt to the new possession-based principles of Montemurro – even if the margin was well off the 3-0 victory they secured over the same opposition on Thursday evening.
After a midweek win characterised by struggles with the Slovenian press and sloppy turnovers, the hosts were cleaner with the ball in their defensive third in the re-match, which resulted in fewer opportunities off giveaways for the Europeans.
This was accompanied by improvements in the side's movement and combination play going forward, particularly from Carpenter and Amy Sayer on the right.
The promising build-ups, however, were frequently let down by the final ball or stymied by desperate last-gasp defending.
That was until the 50th minute, when Seimsen's inch-perfect ball for Carpenter set the wingback up to put it on a plate for Heyman.

Charli Grant came close to killing the game off in the 70th minute but had her shot cleared off the line, before the visitors raised their intensity.
Having hardly been sighted to that point, Mackenzie Arnold was called into action in the 90th minute to make a quick reaction to deny Kastelec, but the Australian keeper could do little about the 22-year-old's effort a minute later.
Seeking to bounce back, Montemurro will now shuffle his deck for fixtures against Panama on July 5 and July 8, with Carpenter, Cooney-Cross and Kennedy amongst eight players leaving camp, with eight new players set to jet into West Australia.

Celtic sign 'highly rated' striker Osmand from Fulham

Striker Callum Osmand has joined Celtic from Fulham, with the Premier League club confirming that the "highly-rated" 19-year-old had rejected the offer of a new contract. Osmand, who has signed a four-year deal with the Scottish champions, has been at Craven Cottage since the age of 13 and has represented both England and Wales at youth level. Advertisement Last season, Osmand scored 18 goals across all competitions for Fulham's Under-21 side. The teenager revealed he received advice about the move from Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Matt O'Riley, who was a Fulham trainee before a successful spell at Celtic Park. "He was telling me about how big the club is, how amazing the fans are and it's a new life really," Osmand told Celtic TV. "So, 'excited' is definitely the word for me. It feels unbelievable. It's a massive move and I can't wait to step out at Celtic Park in front of all the fans. "When I spoke to the manager, he was really positive. The plan and pathway he has set out for the club is top." Advertisement Osmand becomes Celtic's fourth first-team addition of the summer following the arrival of fellow forward Benjamin Nygren from Nordsjaelland and the return of defender Kieran Tierney from Arsenal and goalkeeper Ross Doohan from Aberdeen. Fulham will be due a development fee from the Glasgow club. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers told his club website: "He's a quick and powerful striker and I'm really looking forward to working with him. "I'm sure he can be really successful with us. He is a highly-rated, talented young player."

Liverpool's Trey Nyoni signs new long-term contract with the club

Trey Nyoni has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool. The central midfielder turned 18 today, and the new deal rewards the impression and impact he has made since his arrival from Leicester City in September 2023. He signed his first professional contract in October 2024, having been training regularly with the senior squad. A special birthday for Trey! 🌟🎈 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 30, 2025 Upon signing the new deal, the teenager said: 'It means a lot, obviously supporting the club from young as well, so it's a great feeling. Now I have to go out and show why I've earned this contract. 'It's just step-by-step, day-by-day, just becoming better every day, improving as a player. I'm still young. You know, there's a lot of improvement. That's the most important thing.' After impressive performances in several different age groups in Liverpool's youth academy, Nyoni made his debut in the same campaign as a late substitute in the FA Cup fourth round victory over Southampton in February 2024, becoming the fourth youngest debutant in the club's history. He has also impressed head coach Arne Slot, as he was involved in pre-season and made five senior appearances last season — including in the Champions League against PSV, becoming the club's youngest-ever player in a European competition (17 years and 213 days). Advertisement Nyoni has also represent England at every youth level from undder-16 to under-20. A new contract for Nyoni is great news for him and Liverpool and underlines the faith the club have in his potential. The 18-year-old has been turning heads since he arrived at the academy and has been fast-tracked through the age groups because of his talent. The gifted midfielder has technical quality in abundance. He is calm in possession and is versatile, capable of playing in multiple midfield roles. The hope is he is the next gem to emerge from the academy that has seen a number of players come through and play first team minutes. It remains to be seen what Liverpool decide is best for his development this season, but the ambitious midfielder will no doubt be hoping to make another strong impression in pre-season and form part of Slot's first team plans.

Stefanos Tsitsipas retires injured in Wimbledon first round

Stefanos Tsitsipas retired with a back injury to exit Wimbledon in the first round, abandoning his match against French qualifier Valentin Royer. The 113th-ranked Royer was two sets up against Tsitsipas, a former grand slam finalist at the Australian and French Open, when he decided to abandon. Advertisement The Greek took a medical timeout at 4-1 down in the first set, having lost the first 6-3, and received treatment for his back on-court. He was reportedly heard saying 'It's impossible to play tennis like this' as he managed the pain. The 24th seed continued to play after the timeout but after losing the second set 6-2 opted to retire. The Greek player has recently acquired the help of highly-experienced coach Goran Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon in 2001. The Croatian enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Novak Djokovic over nine Grand Slam titles between 2019 and 2024, as well as helping Marin Cilic to his only major victory at the 2014 US Open. Advertisement Tsitsipas had said that Ivanisevic could 'definitely give me a clear direction of where I'm lacking and where I should be focusing on when it comes to my strengths,' but a premature end to his time at Wimbledon leaves an uncertain future between the pair. The 26-year-old regrouped to feature in two exhibition matches at the Hurlingham Club last week, beating Frances Tiafoe 7-6(9), 6-7(4), 10-7 before defeat to Tomas Martin Etcheverry 4-6, 6-2, 5-10. But the back injury flared up against Royer and has scuppered hopes of bouncing back after falling down the rankings to sit 26th entering SW19. The former world No 2 had looked uncomfortable in fiercely hot conditions out on Court 14 and suffers from asthma, while also enduring breathing difficulties at this year's Australian Open. Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas looks dejected after losing his first round match by walkover (REUTERS) She is unlikely to be the only player struggling in the heat, with temperatures expected to reach 34C at Wimbledon, forcing the All England Club to institute its warm-weather policy. This comes into effect when temperatures exceed 30.1C and means an extra 10-minute break between sets two and three in women's singles and three and four in men's singles. Several seeds have already fallen: ninth seed Daniil Medvedev is the highest-ranked casualty, falling in four sets to Benjamin Bonzi, while Latvin 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko lost a three-set tussle with British No 3 Sonay Kartal.
