CCHF toll climbs in Iraq with new case
Shafaq News/ Health authorities in Iraq have confirmed new infections of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), including the country's first fatality from the disease this year in Dhi Qar province.
A medical source in Dhi Qar told Shafaq News that the death involved a woman in her sixties from Al-Rifai district, north of the provincial capital. 'She had been experiencing symptoms consistent with hemorrhagic fever and was receiving treatment, but her condition failed to improve,' the source said.
In Nineveh, health authorities confirmed a new infection in a 27-year-old man from the Qayyarah subdistrict, south of Mosul. According to a source in the Nineveh Health Directorate, the Central Public Health Laboratory in Baghdad confirmed the diagnosis on Wednesday.
The patient was transferred to Al-Shifa Specialized Hospital to undergo the Ministry of Health's treatment protocols and remains under strict medical observation, the source added.
The new case raises Nineveh's total to four confirmed infections since April 30, when the province reported its first case of the year. According to the same official, three previous patients have fully recovered and were discharged after completing medical evaluations.

Iraq reveals 19 Congo fever deaths in 2025
Baghdad – Iraq said Thursday it has recorded 19 deaths from Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever already this year and urged farmers and abattoir workers to step up precautions when handling livestock. A total of 123 cases have been recorded nationwide, health ministry spokesman Saif al-Badr said in a statement, adding that 36 of them were reported in the poor southern province of Dhi Qar, which is heavily dependent on livestock farming. Congo fever is a viral disease which is transmitted to people either by tick bites or through contact with infected animal blood or tissues during or immediately after slaughter, according to the World Health Organization. It has a fatality rate of between 10 and 40 percent, and most cases have been reported in the livestock industry. A previous surge in infections in Iraq in 2022 saw at least 27 deaths, compared with just six cases for the two decades from 1989 to 2009. The WHO attributed that flare-up to a rise in the tick population resulting from the failure to carry out pesticide spraying campaigns in 2020 and 2021.

CCHF: Iraq's Samarra district records 2025 1st case
Shafaq News/ Samarra district in central Iraq has confirmed its first case of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) for 2025, a source from the Saladin Health Directorate reported on Wednesday. The source told Shafaq News that the patient, 41-year-old Othman Thaj Madloul, tested positive after a June 10 sample was verified by the Central Public Health Laboratory in Baghdad using RT-PCR. Health teams quickly enforced isolation protocols, launched contact tracing, and initiated awareness campaigns in high-risk areas.
