Vinod Kambli refused part-time job, took 700 pounds from his father, spent it with friends: 'He never cared about money'

Vinod Kambli, whose deteriorating health left the entire Indian cricket fraternity worried, has been able to get his life back on track after receiving BCCI's aid and having successfully recovered from an infection that got him hospitalised a couple of months ago. It was in December last year that Kambli's appearance at the unveiling of the Ramakant Achrekar memorial sparked health concerns. The former India batter, whose career took a turn for the worse after a promising start in the early 1990s, remained in the news for the next 60-odd days due to health issues. In an interview. Kambli revealed that he had collapsed and was diagnosed with a urinary infection, and just when he seemed to have recovered from it, he was hospitalised again due to a relapse. Vinod Kambli failed to manage his finances(AFP) Thankfully, Kambli has stayed good this year, but his condition always reopens the biggest 'what if' in Indian cricket. One of the biggest missed opportunities in Indian cricket, Kambli remains its biggest mystery. If only he had handled his distractions well, Kambli could have been a legend. But not everything falls as planned. Kambli always had promise; of course, we know it. But did you know, even before Kambli broke into the Indian team, the news of his talent spread to different shores. When his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar made history by signing on with Yorkshire, Kambli was already in England, playing for a local club, where he made friends. More than 30 years later, those friends are worried about Kambli and wonder what went wrong. "As a South Asian, Sachin joining Yorkshire was big news. I'll tell you what was better, he brought along with him his friend Vinod Kambli, who played in our league. I've never-ever met a person who hits the ball as hard as he used to," Kambli's friend Nasa Hussain told The Indian Express. "He just ran down the track and hits the first ball for six, and you think, 'well okay'. Young man from India, never seen before, never heard of before, and he just comes and smashes it. Subsequently, he went on to score two double-hundreds against England. That was some talent. In today's day and age, that guy would have been a multi-millionaire." Solly Adam, the man responsible for Tendulkar's contract, was like a father figure to Kambli. So when money was tough – Kambli used to earn 25 pounds for a day – the left-handed batter was suggested by his friends that it won't be a bad idea to take up a part-time gig. But Kambli turned it down, exuding confidence in his cricket abilities. After a solid season, Kambli had earned a total of 700 pounds, which was handed over to his father. But handling wealth was never the youngster's cup of tea. When Kambli spent 700 pounds with his friends "One day we were sitting, 10 cricketers. All of them had part-time jobs except for Vinod and Sachin. So a cricketer from Mumbai asked Vinod – 'Since you only earn 25 pound a match, why don't you work at one of Solly's places? Kambli didn't think for a minute, pat came his reply: 'I and Sachin will make money playing Test cricket, I don't want to divert my attention doing part-time jobs.' That was exceptional, what confidence. He was very young, far from being a Test batsman but he had the confidence," Solly told IE. "Vinod, when he returned to India, took all the money from his father and spent it with his friends … Vinod never cared about money, nor did he have any respect for commodities," Solly had written in his book.

IND vs ENG: ‘Cannot be one-hundred wonder' — Sanjay Manjrekar's stern message to senior India batter

India's Rishabh Pant celebrates with batting partner KL Rahul AP/PTI(AP06_23_2025_000341A) India may have lost the first Test of the ongoing five-match series against England, but the performance of their top-order batters was a major positive to take forward. At Headingley, while the lower order collapsed in both innings, the likes of Shubman Gill , KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored centuries, and Rishabh Pant smashed brilliant hundreds in each innings to keep India in the fight. Looking ahead to the crucial second Test at Edgbaston, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is confident that Pant will continue his sublime form. Speaking on Star Sports' 'Game Plan' show, Manjrekar praised Pant's hunger and determination to make big scores in the longest format. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I think he (Rishabh Pant) will carry on because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a single Test, it takes a lot out of you mentally. To do it again within 48 hours shows the hallmark of an exceptional player,' Manjrekar said. India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series Highlighting another senior batter, Manjrekar pointed out that KL Rahul must keep his good form going for the remainder of the series. 'Rishabh Pant enjoys playing Tests. He has not scored enough runs in recent times, so he is hungry. I see him continuing this form, but there is another senior batter who now has no choice but to carry his form through the series. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Indian cricket needs him badly and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer,' he added. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India will have to bounce back strongly in the second Test, which starts on July 2 in Birmingham. The challenge could get tougher with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss the match for workload management. England, on the other hand, have bolstered their squad with Jofra Archer, adding more firepower to their pace attack. With the series on the line, India's top order will once again have to lead the fightback in challenging English conditions. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Club World Cup 2025: Harry Kane scores twice as Bayern Munich beats Flamengo to enter quarterfinals

Harry Kane scored twice and Bayern Munich capitalized on a quick start to beat Flamengo 4-2 in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Sunday (June 29, 2025). Germany's premier soccer club regrouped quickly from its only loss of the tournament last week against Benfica, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then holding off Flamengo's comeback attempts to advance to the quarterfinals. Bayern Munich will face Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in Atlanta after PSG routed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 4-0 earlier Sunday. Kane's first goal was a deflected strike nine minutes into the match that put Bayern up by a pair of goals, and the prolific goal scorer found the back of the net again on a feed from Joshua Kimmich that he whipped past goalie Agustín Rossi. The Bundesliga champion struck early when Flamengo star Erick Pulgar headed the ball into his own net off Kimmich's corner in the sixth. Even though Flamengo had plenty of opportunities, the Brazilian club failed to capitalize on enough of them and never got closer than a goal. Luiz Araújo had Flamengo's best chance of the first half with a left-footed shot toward the back post, but Manuel Neuer slid over and knocked the ball away for a brilliant save. Gerson finally put Flamengo on the board when he beat Neuer in the 32nd to cut the 2-0 deficit in half before Leon Goretzka restored Bayern's two-goal lead. Flamengo pulled within a goal again in the second half when Jorginho converted a penalty. Then came Kane again, finishing in the 73rd with his third goal of the tournament. The 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium — home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins — has been one of the more well-attended venues of the tournament and was almost completely full on Sunday (June 29, 2025), with many attendees wearing Flamengo's iconic black and red kit. Key moment Jorginho sent Neuer the wrong way on a penalty in the 54th to cut the deficit to 3-2 and give Flamengo life before Kane put them away with his second goal. Takeaways Bayern's win ensured that at least four European clubs will advance to the quarterfinals. It also set up a rematch of the 2020 Champions League final that Bayern won 1-0. What they said "I know a lot of my game is judged on goals and I've been doing it throughout my career, but what maybe some of the German fans and some of the Bayern fans are realizing is that I'll do anything for the team to help us win." — Kane. 'We had our opportunities, but unfortunately they were the superior team in this fixture. ... The corner kick at the beginning of the match sort of took down our confidence a little bit.' — Flamengo coach Filipe Luis through an interpreter.
