Knight life at Kilmarnock castle proves popular with visitors

A brand-new, exclusive behind-the-scenes tour has launched, granting access to parts of the castle never before open to the public and offering a rich, immersive experience that brings centuries of Scottish history to life. The 90-minute guided tour (with a maximum group size of 20) promises not just a walk through time, but a truly unforgettable journey into the very heart of this storied stronghold. Dean Castle, with its distinctive towers and fortified walls, has witnessed hundreds of years of political power, family legacy, and national heritage. Once the seat of the powerful Boyd family, close allies of the Stewart monarchs, it has hosted nobility, withstood conflict, and stood proudly through Scotland's turbulent history. While the castle's Main Hall and courtyard have long been accessible to the public, this new tour offers an unprecedented look at its hidden spaces. (Image: Dean Castle has witnessed hundreds of years of political power) Participants will explore the winding spiral staircases and ascend to the battlements for panoramic views across the estate and surrounding Ayrshire countryside. These upper levels of the Palace have remained closed to the general public until now. Tour-goers will also access lesser-seen rooms filled with atmosphere and echoes of the past, giving a glimpse into how the castle was once lived in and defended. Along the way, knowledgeable guides will share fascinating stories of the castle's architecture, former inhabitants, and its place in Scottish history. As you climb the same narrow stairwells that lords, ladies, soldiers and servants once did, it's easy to feel the weight of history in every stone. This is not a sterile museum experience; it's an active encounter with the past, full of texture, detail, and drama. From the musty scent of ancient wood and stone to the hush of hidden chambers, the tour creates an atmosphere that draws visitors fully into the medieval world. This new offering is perfect for history lovers, fans of architecture, and those looking to experience one of Scotland's heritage gems in a new and intimate way. Due to the nature of the building and its age, the tour is designed for those who are comfortable navigating more challenging terrain. Expect uneven surfaces, narrow passageways, and steep spiral staircases throughout the experience. As such, the tour is not suitable for individuals with certain health conditions or mobility challenges. It is also not recommended for very young children, though older children are welcome if supervised by an adult. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, though the timing may vary slightly depending on the group and weather conditions – which may restrict access to some parts of the battlements for safety reasons. Visitors are asked to wear appropriate footwear and come prepared for the physical nature of the tour. Booking a space confirms that guests understand and accept these conditions. The safety and enjoyment of every visitor is of paramount importance to the Dean Castle team. (Image: A 'chitarra battente', a chordophone of the guitar family is part of the castle's collection) With group sizes strictly limited to 20 people, the behind-the-scenes tour at Dean Castle feels personal and exclusive. Whether you're a local resident eager to see a different side of a familiar landmark, or a visitor to Ayrshire with an appetite for history, this experience offers something truly special. Unlike standard self-guided visits, this curated tour offers rich interpretation and interaction with expert guides who bring passion and depth to every stop on the route. Their storytelling will connect the dots between the physical surroundings and the lives of the people who once called Dean Castle home. It's a chance to see hidden corners, learn untold stories, and quite literally walk in the footsteps of Scottish nobility, all within the magnificent setting of one of Ayrshire's most iconic landmarks. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning with fresh eyes, this tour will deepen your appreciation for the rich tapestry of history woven into the walls of Dean Castle. Due to limited spaces and high interest, early booking is strongly advised. Tour dates and times are Fri 4th July – 12pm, Sun 13th July – 12pm, Fri 18th July – 12pm, Sun 27th July – 12pm, Fri 1st Aug – 12pm, Sun 10th Aug – 12pm, Fri 15th Aug – 12m, Sun 24th Aug – 12pm, Fri 29th Aug – 12pm, Sun 7th Sept – 12pm and Fri 12th Sept – 12pm.

The design of a £35 million upgrade of one of Edinburgh's key streets has been approved by city councillors despite misgivings from opposition parties about the cost and lack of funding. A council committee agreed on Thursday to continue work on the scheme to remove parking and most traffic from George Street in the centre of the New Town, with construction scheduled to start in two years' time and finish in 2030. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A visualisation of the full George Street upgrade option | City of Edinburgh Council However, a Conservative councillor said the lack of secured funding for the project was the 'elephant in the room' and called for the existing street layout be properly maintained instead, using parking charge income. The council plans to pay for the scheme using external funding, such as from the city's visitor levy which starts next year, and developers' contributions. Officials said it was unusual for funding for such projects to be in place before they received final approval. The "reduced design" option, costing £20.3 million | City of Edinburgh Council City centre Conservative councillor Joanna Mowat said: 'We have been talking about George Street for nearly 11 years. The elephant in the room is that we still don't have any money and are reliant on applying to third parties and having this money granted to us before we can put a single shovel in the ground. 'Be realistic' 'All we have is a lot of very expensively-sourced designs, which are very pretty on the page, but without that money are no closer to being completed. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Everyone is heartily fed up, because those people who live and work on George Street and are running businesses would just like to see something get done.' The "basic design" option, costing £17.4 million | City of Edinburgh Council Ms Mowat proposed instead that the £3.2m annual parking revenue from the street be used to pay for the £10.5m 'maintenance' option in the plans to bring it up to an acceptable standard. She told the transport and environment committee: 'We should be realistic. That's what we can afford.' Liberal Democrat councillor Hal Osler said: 'We are deeply concerned about the level of funding', and questioned whether it was worth spending £35m on the scheme. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad SNP councillor Neil Gardiner said all the upgrade options should be retained until funding was clearer. The "above ground design" option, costing £13.5 million | City of Edinburgh Council But Jamie Robertson, the council's strategic transport planning and delivery manager, said: 'It's quite rare to have funding in advance of obtaining statutory consent, and we are in the development pipeline with George Street. Price tag reduced 'I totally hear the noise around 'you do not have funding for this project', but we are not unique in this. If you ask me the same question in six months' time, I'm pretty sure I'll have much more clarity.' Mr Robertson said progressing the full scheme increased the likelihood of securing external funding. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Stephen Jenkinson, tje committee's Labour convener, said: The project is rooted in making the area safer, more sustainable and accessible for all. 'This is a unique opportunity to bring one of Edinburgh's most important streets into the modern world whilst still maintaining its unique history and features. 'The wider potential improvements are vast, from benefits to local residents and businesses to enhancing Edinburgh as a visitor destination. We're on our way to delivering a bold new vision for George Street and our city centre.' Mr Jenkinson said last week he expected the cost of the plans to fall further after 'more detailed and accurate costings' had seen the price tag reduced from £39.5m last September.
