Council's £100k appeal to buy lost Turner painting

Yahoo3 hours ago

A council has launched a one-week fundraiser to return JMW Turner's earliest-known oil painting "to its home".
Bristol City Council, which owns Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, is trying to raise £100,000 to help purchase The Rising Squall, which depicts the Avon George.
The painting had been lost for 150 years before it was rediscovered last year.
Phillip Walker, head of culture for Bristol City Council, said: "It's an incredibly important and relevant painting for Bristol because it's the very first and probably only oil painting that Turner ever painted of a Bristol scene."

"This is the very first oil painting he ever painted... what's more incredible is that he was only 17 at the time," Mr Walker added.
The guide price for the painting is £300,000, and the council hopes to raise the rest of the money from other sources before the auction on 2 July.
Mr Walker said the council is "putting all of its feelers out" to "try and raise the money it can to stand a chance at bidding".
The painting was debuted at the Royal Academy in 1793, three days after Turner's 18th birthday, before being bought by Reverend Robert Nixon, a customer of Turner's father's barber shop.
Mr Nixon's son inherited the painting after his death, and it then fell "into obscurity", having last been exhibited in Tasmania, Australia.
If the council is unsuccessful in purchasing Turner's work, it said all of the money that has been donated will be returned.
"We want to make this work, so we're asking anyone who can to help and share the enthusiasm and the opportunity," Mr Walker said.
"This really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Bristol to show how important art and culture are to it."

Danny Boyle Has This 1 Regret About Stepping Away From No Time To Die

Danny Boyle is reflecting on his decision to pull out of directing the most recent James Bond film three months after signing up for the project. The Oscar-winning filmmaker was originally supposed to helm Daniel Craig's last outing as 007, No Time To Die. However, just three months after he was announced as its director, Danny parted ways with the Bond franchise, due to what was described at the time as – of course! – 'creative differences'. During a new interview with Business Insider, the Trainspotting director admitted: 'The thing I regret about that is the script was really good. John Hodge is a wonderful writer.' He added: 'I don't think [the producers] appreciated how good that script was, and because they didn't, we moved on, and that's the way it should be.' Both Danny and John – who previously collaborated on Trainspotting and its sequel – left No Time To Die in August 2018, after which Cary Joji Fukunaga took over as director. Cary also worked with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Phoebe Waller-Bridge on the No Time To Die screenplay. Back in 2019, Danny told Empire: 'What John Hodge and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn't finished, but it could have been really good […] you have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer.' The James Bond franchise has recently undergone yet more behind-the-scenes changes, with Amazon MGM Studios taking over creative control after long-time producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli stepped down from their roles after 30 years. Speculation is now rife about who will be taking over the role of James Bond, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson still the current frontrunner, though everyone from Tom Hardy, Sam Heughan and James Norton to Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page, Bafta winner George Mackay and even former Superman star Henry Cavill have also been rumoured. Heatwave alert! How to survive Glastonbury in the sun

It's the stuff of dreams: the weather forecast is good. Next week's weather shows a never-ending flow of sunny-skied days stretching ahead – good news for anybody, but especially good news for people looking to attend Glastonbury Festival next year. Or is it? As veteran festivalgoers will know, hot temperatures can be just as deadly for people wanting to have a good time as a thunderstorm. While rain turns festivals into swamps, sun turns them into a sweltering desert. With the mercury tipped to remain in the high twenties next week, here's what to know about surviving Glasto – and indeed any outdoor festival – in the full glare of the summer sun. It's top of the list for a reason: not enough people do it. Applying Factor 50 throughout the day is a must if you want to avoid getting extremely burned on day one. If you want something light and hydrating, a brand like Dussl is a good shout – their suncreams work both as protection and as a moisturiser. Otherwise, opt for the tried and tested Nivea. Battery powered fans – many sniff at them, but there's a lot to be said for having them on hand. Light, easy to pack and pretty much indestructible, they're an invaluable way of cooling down during a long, hot day in a field with much shade. Best of all, they're cheap to get – Amazon offer plenty for as little as a tenner. Sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to protect yourself during the hotter hours is to layer up. That means lots of light, cool layers: linen, cotton and as few synthetic fabrics as possible. Shirts – which can be buttoned up or left loose – are a must, as are roomy skirts and shorts. Ideally, you'll be aiming to maximise airflow around your body while protecting your skin. Damson Madder is a good place to shop for loose, flowing items: their Chlo shirt is both patterned and comfy, as is their polka-dotted Layla skirt, which has the added bonus of coming down to knee length. And while you're at it, wear a hat! Sunhats are an essential way to protect oneself from sunstroke, and good news: they sure are having a moment. How about investing in one of Self Esteem's 6Music Dad caps? They were seen everywhere last year. There's nothing worse than waking up at 7.30am to a roasting hot tent – that goes doubly on hot summer days. But there are ways to mitigate this. While Glastonbury doesn't allow awnings, it's a good idea to shop for a tent that has side flaps or air vents that can be opened to allow better circulation and cooling. Good examples of this include the Sea to Summit Telos Freestanding tent (ultralight, while the outside of the tent can be converted into a sunshade) and the pop-up Gazelle T4, which includes six large windows for maximum ventilation. It sounds obvious, but again – it's easy to forget to drink water when you're six pints deep. Solve this issue by investing in a reusable water bottle: Chilly's is a classic, and comes in a range of fun designs. Glastonbury especially is good at having multiple hydration stations around the campsite, and they normally include reusable, lightweight aluminium water bottles in welcome packs for festivalgoers – so there's no reason not to use them. Nothing makes you feel worse than eating a heavy, greasy meal then trying to go for a dance in the sunshine. To that end – try and avoid them if possible. Glastonbury is bursting at the seams with great places to go eat, so try and aim for places that sell fruit (watermelon is great at keeping you hydrated) and eat smaller portions to give your body less work. Down with hiking boots! They'll make your feet feel sweaty, disgusting and be a nightmare to peel off in the evenings. Opt for lightweight options instead: ultra-comfortable sandals like Birkenstocks are always a good shout, for instance, especially as they let your feet breathe. So are hard-wearing, comfy trainers. For the fashionable, Puma are always a good bet: their Speedcats have Ortholite soles, while the Speedcat Ballets are a nice mix of fashionable and comfy.

Garnacho adds fuel to transfer talk with Villa shirt

Man United's Garnacho Sparks Speculation with Aston Villa Shirt Post Public message or private rebellion? Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has ignited fresh speculation over his Old Trafford future after sharing a photo of himself wearing an Aston Villa shirt emblazoned with Marcus Rashford's name and number. The image, posted to his social media on Sunday night, showed the 20-year-old in Villa's claret and blue home strip with 'Rashford 9' proudly displayed on the back. Advertisement Rashford, who left United on loan in January after being frozen out by manager Ruben Amorim, replied to the post with a brief but telling comment: 'My brother', accompanied by a heart emoji. It was a public show of solidarity between two players seemingly caught in the same storm. Garnacho: Instagram Fractured relationships and uncertain futures While reports say Garnacho insists the post was simply a gesture of support for his team-mate, the timing and symbolism have added to the uncertainty surrounding his own future at Man United. The winger's relationship with Amorim has grown increasingly strained since the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, where he was benched for the biggest match of the season. Advertisement 'Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know,' Garnacho said after the game. 'The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.' That candid admission only intensified the sense of detachment between player and manager. Amorim reportedly told Garnacho in May he was free to find a new club this summer — a stark shift for a player once seen as central to United's long-term plans. Garnacho and Rashford: Misfits with shared direction There is a sense that Garnacho and Rashford are now walking similar paths. Both have been cast aside by Amorim, both retain immense talent, and both appear to be angling for a new chapter elsewhere. The Instagram post, far from a random summer snap, feels like a coded message — mutual recognition from two players who have slipped through the cracks at Man United. Market impact and missed opportunities Garnacho's online statement may have consequences beyond sentiment. With Amorim unlikely to reintegrate him into the first-team setup — particularly ahead of the club's pre-season tour of the United States — potential suitors could sense leverage in transfer negotiations. How much will United realistically command for a player who seems so publicly out of step with the manager's plans? Advertisement Chelsea have been monitoring Garnacho, although their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens could complicate matters. A return to Atlético Madrid, his former club, remains a possibility, and other European clubs are expected to enter the frame. What once looked like a rising star in United's next generation may now become a symbol of what happens when trust between player and coach quietly unravels. The shirt, the name, the number — they spoke louder than any quote.
