High Court sets July 21 for contempt hearing against Dr M in ‘Kutty' suit

KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here has fixed July 21 to hear Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's committal proceedings against Dr Mahathir Mohamad over a press conference the former prime minister held last year after testifying in his defamation lawsuit.
Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong set the date after Mahathir's lawyer, Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi, informed the court that they needed more time to file additional affidavits.
'We need to get his (Mahathir's) instructions for the purposes of filing,' he said, adding that Mahathir is currently attending the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025.
Zahid's lawyer, Shahrul Fazli Kamarulzaman, said they had no objection to the deferral of the hearing to July 21.
The court granted Zahid leave to initiate contempt proceedings on Jan 7.
This followed a press conference Mahathir had held after testifying in his defamation suit.
During the press conference, Mahathir produced copies of his identity card as well as the birth certificates of him and his children.
Zahid claimed the media conference breached the sub judice rule, potentially impairing the integrity and independence of the judiciary in administering justice.
Mahathir filed the defamation suit in 2022, alleging that Zahid had used the name 'Kutty' as a derogatory reference to him.
Zahid is alleged to have made the remark at an Umno divisional meeting in Kelana Jaya, Selangor, on July 30, 2017.
Mahathir claims the remark implied that he was not born a Malay or a Muslim, and that his original name was Mahathir son of Iskandar Kutty.
It also implied that the name Mahathir Mohamad was used to profit himself politically and personally, the former prime minister said.
In his defence, Zahid said the name referred to an individual based on information contained in a copy of an old identity card.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said all Malay-based parties must come under a single, broad coalition as a platform to safeguard the community's future. PETALING JAYA : PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has defended Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new platform to unite the Malays, saying the proliferation of political parties is one of the main reasons behind disunity within the community. He said the democratic system had allowed the formation of many political parties and, therefore, a grand alliance involving intellectuals, corporate figures, politicians and religious scholars was needed to unite the Malays. 'All segments must support this new platform. The proliferation of Malay-dominated parties is seen as a cause of division, and this is difficult to control because democracy allows it.' He said all Malay-based parties must come under a single, broad coalition as a platform to safeguard the community's future. When asked if this movement was a better platform to unite Malays compared to Perikatan Nasional (PN), he responded: 'PN is a coalition of political parties. It's different from this new platform.' The grouping announced by the former prime minister yesterday goes beyond existing political parties, he added. Earlier today, Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Mahathir's new platform is nothing more than part of a repeated cycle of failed political experiments. He said Malay politics cannot be built on nostalgic rhetoric and repeated attempts to form new, loosely structured coalitions without a clear struggle or foundation. Besides Tuan Ibrahim, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin were also present at Mahathir's announcement for the new grouping yesterday. Mahathir said the formation of the new Malay alliance is aimed at 'restoring Malay power' in government. He said the coalition, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a formal political party for now but serves as an umbrella platform to protect the political and economic future of the Malay community. He also invited individual Umno members to join the coalition — but not the party as a whole. This marks Mahathir's latest effort to unite the Malays through a political platform, following previous initiatives such as Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Pejuang, ahead of the 15th general election (GE15). However, all candidates linked to GTA were defeated in GE15, including Mahathir himself, who lost his deposit and failed to retain his Langkawi seat. GTA, launched in 2022, was effectively dissolved a year later when Mahathir, its chairman, admitted the movement was not effective at gaining voter support.

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.
