PRESS members and their immediate family members with a flair for the performing arts are invited to take part in the 'Stark Cup Penang Press Talent Showcase 2025'.
Scheduled for May 24 at the Penang Hui Yin Seh Buddhist Society, the event aims to showcase a wide range of talents — from singing, dancing, impersonation to instrumental and group performances.
Organised by Penang Press Club (PPC), with Stark Development Sdn Bhd as the main sponsor and Penang Hui Yin Seh Buddhist Society as co-organiser, the showcase offers RM5,000 in cash prizes.
The top three winners will receive RM1,000, RM800 and RM500 respectively.
There will also be 10 consolation prizes, as well as awards for Most Popular Performance and Best Costume.
Penang Press Club president Ang Tong Kai expressed hope that the event, which was last held in 2019, would encourage greater interaction among journalists and strengthen unity within the media industry.
'This is not just a talent showcase, but also an opportunity for media professionals to connect more closely with the public. We welcome more media practitioners, media-related agency staff and interested parties to join us,' he said.
Stark Development Sdn Bhd deputy chairman Datuk Toh Chin Leong noted the important role of journalists in chronicling the times.
'We support this event as it gives media professionals a platform to express their diverse talents beyond journalism,' he said.
Penang Hui Yin Seh Society chairperson Khiah Hock Leong shared a similar sentiment.
'Every media person has an artistic soul. This event lets them step out from behind the scenes and show the public a different side of who they are,' he said.
Event organising committee chairman Pek Bee Hong added that the competition is free to enter, and that both Stark Development Sdn Bhd and Penang Hui Yin Seh Society will each send three representatives to participate, further adding excitement to the show.
Registration closes on Monday, May 19.

Press members and their immediate family members showcased a wide range of talents in the competition, from singing, dancing and impersonation to instrumental and group performances. Event organising committee chairman Pek Bee Hong said this year's competition was opened to the family members of lifetime members, with the goal of encouraging the younger generation to showcase their talents. "The youngest participant is five-year-old Chua Lee Hong, who gave his all during the performance. His mother Tan Phaik Shan was there to encourage him. "This kind of parent-child interaction was one of the reasons for organising this event,' she said. Penang Hui Yin Seh Buddhist Society chairperson Khiah Hock Leong praised the participants, noting that media professionals, who are usually tasked with documenting reality through words and images, revealed a different side of themselves on stage. "Through this talent competition, we saw a vibrant, creative aspect of media professionals. Their performances and that of their family members were truly admirable," he said.

‘Kaamatan for All' highlights Sabahans' community spirit
Spoilt for choice: Many come to buy handmade beads and Kaamatan-themed accessories at the Hongkod Koisaan. KOTA KINABALU: All eyes will be on the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association's (KDCA) Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang as the month-long Kaamatan or Harvest Festival will culminate in the grand finale, celebrated today and tomorrow. Since May 1, Sabahans have been celebrating Kaamatan with singing, dancing, traditional games and enjoying delicious food. But it is at the Hongkod Koisaan, which loosely means unity hall, where the energy truly comes alive. The celebration here is always the most colourful and exciting, bringing together people of all races and backgrounds to honour the harvest festival and Sabah's rich traditions. The Hongkod Koisaan, the heart of Sabah's native heritage, is a central hub where traditions, history and the way of life of indigenous communities are preserved, promoted and proudly celebrated. The Kaamatan celebration will be extra special as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are expected to attend the celebration today. This will mark the Prime Minister's third appearance at the Kaamatan finale. Sabah's Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin will grace the official closing ceremony tomorrow. Visitors can enjoy cultural performances, traditional sports like blowpipe shooting and stilt walking, as well as visit stalls selling handicrafts, traditional food and attire. They can also add handmade beads and Kaamatan-themed accessories to their collection. One of the highlights of the celebration is the Unduk Ngadau, a special event that honours Huminodun, the legendary maiden who gave her life to save her people from famine. The new Harvest Queen will be crowned tomorrow. This year's theme, 'Kaamatan montok Toinsanan' (Kaamatan for All), is a reminder that true strength lies in the unity and support of the community as everyone strives forward together.
