Tony Ferguson explains what makes Islam Makhachev better than Khabib Nurmagomedov
Tony Ferguson never hesitates to take aim at his former UFC rival, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Ferguson saw five fight bookings with Nurmagomedov fall through but still hopes to settle the score in some shape or form. He suggested coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" against him, then partaking in a grappling match.
When assessing Nurmagomedov's protege, Islam Makhachev, and his decision to move up to 170 pounds, Ferguson made a bold claim.
"Somebody was telling me, who do you think is a better wrestler? Is it Makhachev or is it Khabib?" Ferguson told Helen Yee. "I think Makhachev is the better grappler, honestly. I think he's a little bit faster. I think with Khabib, I think he's just a little bit more not timid of the freestyle that Makhachev presents, but I think Makhachev, he's not going to do so bad at 170. I think he'll be all right."
Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) is moving to welterweight after breaking the UFC record for most lightweight title defenses at four. Former interim lightweight champion Ferguson supports his decision.
"OK, so you have Islam Makhachev that went up north to 170 and then you have Ilia Topuria from '45, he's going to go up to '55 to fight Chuck (Oliveira)," Ferguson said. "Look, when it goes into it, you have to have somebody f*cking fight for the belt. I mean, Makhachev fought how many times at '55? That's much more, and he made weight. When you have that (four title defenses), I think that's a smart move. When you go up, you're going to try to build legacy, you're going to do certain things like that – and he's going to run like his cousin."

Dominick Cruz responds to Jon Anik labeling Merab Dvalishvili bantamweight GOAT

Dominick Cruz responds to Jon Anik labeling Merab Dvalishvili bantamweight GOAT Dominick Cruz didn't appear too bothered with Jon Anik picking Merab Dvalishvili as the bantamweight GOAT over him. The UFC's play-by-play commentator declared UFC champion Dvalishvili as the greatest bantamweight of all time over his good friend and fellow broadcast partner. Cruz, a former two-time UFC champion and former WEC champion, is widely considered the greatest bantamweight of all time. But with Dvalishvili's recent run, which includes numerous former champions, many are pondering if he's done enough to surpass Cruz. Cruz used a basketball reference when reacting to Anik dubbing Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) as the bantamweight GOAT. "I think that Jon Anik knows – he makes media, he knows how to do that," Cruz told MMA Junkie. "That's my boy. I love that dude. The fact that there's even a conversation with me involved, it's not for me to decide something like that. I'm not saying it's this level, but as a parallel you're talking about Lebron (James) and (Michael) Jordan, right? "You're never going to convince me ever, ever, no matter what, under any circumstance that Lebron is better than Jordan. To me. But then you got the latter that's going to say the opposite. I love that there's even a conversation. If there's a conversation, then that's what this thing is about – and you know what? Merab is making it a conversation, too. Good for him." Cruz resonates with Dvalishvili's long road to the top. "This dude has run through the ladder," Cruz continued. "This dude has had to fight up and down the ladder exactly the same way that I did. I had to fight my way through the hardest fights in the division, multiple rematches, before I got my shots. I had to earn every scrap, and I see that similarity in Merab's fights. I tip my hat to him." Dvalishvili will look to notch his second title defense when he runs things back with Sean O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Ben Rothwell to headline BKFC 79, promotion's first event in Australia

Ben Rothwell to headline BKFC 79, promotion's first event in Australia BKFC is bringing bareknuckle boxing to Australia for an event headlined by a current heavyweight champion and UFC veteran, Ben Rothwell. On Saturday, July 19, BKFC 79 will take place at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. It will be the promotion's first event on the continent. The promotion offically announced the event Tuesday. "Australia has long been on our radar," BKFC president David Feldman said in a press release. "The energy, the fans, and the venue are all perfect for showcasing BKFC. This isn't just a fight night – it's the beginning of a new era of combat sports in Australia." Rothwell (4-0 BKFC) currently holds the BKFC heavyweight crown, but the title will not be on the line in a main event super heavyweight bout against Australian powerlifting champion Alex Simon (0-0 BKFC). Following his exit from the UFC, Rothwell has ripped through four opponents under the BKFC banner, winning each by stoppage. In his last outing at BKFC: KnuckleMania 5, Rothwell knocked out Mick Terrill to become champion. Simon will make his BKFC debut on home soil. "Godly Strong" has dabbled in traditional boxing and MMA, building a record of 1-2 and 1-1, respectively. Also on the card will be UFC veteran Bec Rawlings (4-3 BKFC), who takes on Jade Masson-Wong (3-2). Another heavyweight from Australia, Haze Hepi (1-0 BKFC) will also compete at the event against an opponet to be named.
