"Enthusiasm in Europe to enter into Free Trade Agreement with India": Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Paris: Highlighting growing global confidence in India's economic prospects, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Sunday said there is strong enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India.
Speaking to ANI during his ongoing visit to Paris, France, Goyal noted that India's rising reputation has made nations increasingly eager to deepen trade and diplomatic ties. He also noted the positive momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New Delhi earlier this year.
"There is no time limit for these discussions, but the European Union President, Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Modi had a meeting in New Delhi in February. It was decided that we should conclude a good Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. Considering the relations that I have built with my counterpart, the European Union Trade Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, I feel that we will progress very fast and take it forward soon. There is enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with India, and from the feedback we get from the industry in India, it seems India will also benefit from this," Goyal said, adding that when both will benefit, it is natural that it is our responsibility to do it quickly.
Earlier, while speaking to the media in Paris, Goyal also expressed gratitude towards France for its support following the terror attack in Pahalgam.
"India is very grateful to France for the strong support and solidarity expressed when there was a terror strike at Pahalgam. The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India," he said.
He emphasised the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, which he said had given "fresh momentum" to the robust Indo-French relationship.
"The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron share a very deep personal connect and rapport and have had frequent interactions, giving afresh momentum to the strong French-India ties..." he said.
The commerce minister commenced his three-day official visit to France on Sunday, part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from June 1 to 5.
As part of his visit, Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with several French leaders, including Minister of Economy Eric Lombard and Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin.
The discussions will focus on strengthening the Indo-French economic partnership and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade and investment cooperation.
As part of the high-level visit to France, a comprehensive agenda of strategic business meetings and engagements has been scheduled. With top leadership of major French companies such as Vicat, Total Energies, L'Oreal, Renault, Valeo, EDF, and ATR, the visit will feature the India-France Business Round Table and the India-France CEO Forum, fostering dialogue between leading industry stakeholders from both countries.
During his stay, the Minister will also participate in the informal gathering of WTO Ministers on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting.
At this crucial forum, he will engage with global counterparts on key multilateral trade issues and articulate India's perspectives and priorities.

"Miles to go": Piyush Goyal sees strong potential in India-Italy bilateral trade
Brescia [Italy]: Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday pointed out that the bilateral trade between India and Italy is very low, as he suggested that the trade relationship has "miles to go". Speaking at the India-Italy Plenary Session of the Business Forum alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Antonio Tajani, Minister Piyush Goyal asked the businesses present at the event whether the current trade volume "meets even a minuscule portion of the huge potential between Italy and India." "We have miles to go," Piyush Goyal said, painting a hopeful picture that the trade between India and Italy will grow. Piyush Goyal is on a two-day visit to Italy. "We realise that the bilateral trade between our two nations is so low, and is suboptimal. We have a lot of work to do, whether it is trade, whether it is investments, whether it is technology, whether it is tourism," Goyal said. The bilateral trade between India and Italy registered at Euro 14.34 billion in 2023. India's exports to Italy reached Euro 9.16 billion, a decrease of 8.86% compared to the previous year, 2022. During 2023, India's imports from Italy were Euro 5.18 billion, an increase of 7.69 per cent compared to the year 2022. The trade balance remains in India's favour, with Euro 3.98 billion. It has been in India's favour since 1988. He added that the tremendous potential between the two countries can be gauged from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Italy after becoming prime minister. In his address, Minister Goyal said there is a huge opportunity for tourism in India. In the same breath, he invited people of Italy to come to India as tourists. He said Italy is quite a popular destination for Indian tourists, and each time an Indian movie features a song shot in an exotic Italian location, tourism from India to Italy increases significantly. "I'm a greedy person. I would also like to see tourism come from Italy to India. Therefore, I would like to invite the world of cinema to come to India and explore some exotic locations. We have rain in some parts or other of India every season, 12 months a year. You can have the sun, you can have beautiful beaches, historical sites, palaces, temples, a lot of history, a lot of art, a lot of culture, tonnes of tradition, all of that across India, and I would like to invite all of you to India to explore the majesty and the glory," he doubled on his tourism promotion. He said the impending India-EU FTA is making rapid progress. "Our leaders, President Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have tasked us to finalise the deal before the end of this year. I can assure you that we are making rapid progress; we had discussions as recently as two days ago in Paris, where we engaged on finding the pathways for taking forward (the negotiations)," Goyal added. Once finalised, this FTA would be one of the most significant for India, as the EU is its second-largest trading partner after the US. This commitment to finance FTA by the end of 2025 builds on the strategic direction given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during the landmark visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025. After a nine-year lull, India and the EU re-launched negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement in 2022. The talks had reportedly stopped in 2013.

ECB cuts interest rates to 2% as inflation cools
Brussels: The European Central Bank's rate-setting council on Thursday cut the institution's benchmark rate a quarter-point to 2% as it seeks to stimulate the eurozone's struggling economy. The reduction comes with growth slow to pick up and further gloom over US President Donald Trump's most recent threat to raise tariffs on goods from the European Union to 50%. As it announced the rate decision, the ECB was measured in its tone about the US levies and possible retaliation. It said the "uncertainty surrounding trade policies is expected to weigh on business investment and exports," while adding that "rising government investment in defence and infrastructure will increasingly support growth over the medium term." "Higher real incomes and a robust labour market will allow households to spend more. Together with more favourable financing conditions, this should make the economy more resilient to global shocks." However, the bank left its growth forecast for 2025 unchanged at 0.9%. The widely expected move is the seventh consecutive reduction and eighth cut since June last year, when the bank began lowering borrowing costs. Monetary policymakers also lowered their inflation forecast for 2025, with consumer price increases now expected to hit the central bank's 2% target this year.

European Union looking forward to trade deal with India: VP, European Parliament
Brussels: Christel Schaldemose, the Vice-President of the European Parliament in charge of Asia, expressed optimism on Thursday about the finalisation of an impending trade deal between the EU and India. Talking to ANI after an all-party Indian delegation met her as part of India's anti-terror outreach post Operation Sindoor, she said she was looking forward to the negotiations to finalise a trade agreement and other agreements between the EU and India. "India is an amazing country, and we could learn a lot from them... I'm looking forward to the negotiations to finalise a trade agreement and other agreements between the EU and India," Christel Schaldemose said. On the meeting with the BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad-led multi-party delegation, she said, "I was grateful to meet this important delegation from India. When a big democracy comes and tells us how we need to condemn terrorist attacks, and convey the message to our counterparts, we will, of course, listen." On June 2, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed optimism that India could finalise its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) ahead of the year-end deadline, citing minimal divergences between the two economic blocs. Minister Goyal emphasised the complementary nature of the Indian and European economies. "There are not too many issues where we have divergence of opinion. We have both complementary economies," he stated during his recent visit to France. "In most cases, what is of interest to India does not hurt the European economy. And likewise, goods and services that Europe would like to provide to India only support our growth story." The minister acknowledged that certain sensitive areas require careful negotiation on both sides. "Obviously, in any trading relationship, there are certain sensitive issues on both sides which we have to resolve amicably in the interest of both the European Union and India," Goyal noted. India has positioned itself strongly on key issues concerning the EU, particularly regarding gender equality and sustainability. "We are proud of our sisters and our women and the fantastic work they have done and continue to do," Goyal said. "Therefore, if you have a subject like gender, India is on the front foot. When it comes to subjects like sustainability, India is right at the forefront." Once finalised, this FTA would be one of the most significant for India, as the EU is its second-largest trading partner after the US.
