SPAIN has been battered by another wave of wild weather as freak hail storms turned streets into rivers and left holidaymakers in Benidorm soaked.
The latest lashing comes as a yellow weather alert was issued across parts of the country, warning of torrential rain and hail.

The storms hit southern and southeastern Spain on Thursday, hammering regions including Almería, Murcia, Granada, and parts of the Costa Blanca – with the popular British hotspot of Benidorm right in the firing line.
In Librilla in Murcia, 37 litres of rain per square metre reportedly fell in just 30 minutes, sparking sudden flash floods.
Shocking videos shared on social media show water gushing down streets, hail pelting rooftops, and cars trying to navigate rising floodwaters.
Locals and tourists alike were caught off guard, with many dashing for shelter as the skies opened without warning.
Spain's state weather agency, Aemet, issued alerts across several regions as the storms rolled in, warning of 'potential hail' and advising people to remain indoors.
The sudden downpour followed days of unsettled spring weather, marking yet another chaotic chapter in what's become one of the wettest Mays in recent memory.
Authorities have urged caution, particularly for travellers heading to affected areas.
Spain's Civil Protection agency issued multiple warnings for heavy rain, strong winds, and storms, with guidance focused on popular destinations like Valencia, Almería, Majorca and Barcelona.
By Thursday evening, most alerts had been lifted, and forecasters expect calmer conditions from Friday, though isolated showers and storms may persist, especially inland and in the Balearic Islands.

Tourists are advised to monitor local forecasts and follow official advice.
Emergency services were deployed across multiple regions to respond to flooding, blocked roads, and waterlogged properties.
In some areas, storm drains overflowed within minutes, and local authorities struggled to respond to the volume of calls from residents and businesses affected by the flooding.
In Orihuela and Elche, hailstones the size of marbles were reported pounding windows, while footage from Almería showed cars half-submerged and people wading through knee-deep water.
The suddenness of the storms left little time to prepare, with many scrambling to protect homes and vehicles.
Lightning lit up skies across the southeast and east coast, prompting additional safety warnings.
Experts say the storms were intensified by a cold air mass colliding with warm, moist conditions over the Iberian Peninsula — a mix that often triggers sudden, violent weather outbreaks.
Meteorologists at Aemet warn that more unsettled weather may return early next week, especially in higher altitude and coastal areas.
While temperatures may rise slightly, unstable atmospheric conditions raise the risk of further showers and hailstorms.
Local businesses in tourist zones report a drop in foot traffic and last-minute cancellations.
Many bar and restaurant owners in Benidorm say fewer people are dining out as tourists opt to stay indoors.
Travel firms are monitoring the situation, with some advising customers to reconsider trips to the hardest-hit areas.
Flights have not seen major disruptions, but officials urge travellers to stay in contact with airlines as conditions can shift quickly.
Despite the chaos, authorities say flood management systems have improved in several urban areas — leaving them better prepared than in previous years.

Holidaymakers to enjoy quicker flights after major UK airspace change

The changes will enable the largest redesign of UK airspace flight paths since it was first formed in the 1950s, when there were only around 200,000 flights per year Holidaymakers will enjoy quicker flights and fewer delays under major plans to open up new and more direct routes. The changes, laid in Parliament today, will enable the largest redesign of UK airspace flight paths since it was first formed in the 1950s, when there were only around 200,000 flights per year, compared to 2.7 million in 2024. ‌ The plans will help planes avoid having to circle in the sky while waiting to land, reducing delays and emissions per flight. ‌ Redesigned 'skyways' could also allow planes to climb quicker during take-off and descend more smoothly, reducing noise and air pollution for residents who live along flight routes. The new UK Airspace Design Service (UKADS), which will be delivered by NATS (En Route) plc, will be fully operational by the end of this year. It will initially focus on redesigning London's airspace. ‌ The Department for Transport said the redesign will support thousands of jobs in the aviation and tourism sectors. More than 100,000 extra jobs are expected to be created through the expansion at Heathrow alone. Over a longer timeframe, the UKADS could design routes that support flight paths for new and emerging technologies such as drones and flying taxis. ‌ In April, the Government announced £20million to launch new flight technologies, with ministers suggesting airborne taxis and commercial drones could take flight as soon as 2028. Last week marked a step towards the 2028 ambition after the first British flying taxi completed its first ever flight. Aviation Minister Mike Kane said: 'Redesigned 'skyways' will turbocharge growth in the aviation industry, not least by boosting airport expansion plans and supporting job creation, driving millions into the UK economy. 'Modernising our airspace is also one of the simplest ways to help reduce pollution from flying and will set the industry up for a long-term sustainable future.' Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said: "Modernising UK airspace is long overdue and these changes will help to speed up a programme that will provide tangible reforms, from a reduction in delays, improved resilience and lower carbon emissions.'

Man visits 120 chip shops across the UK and this Welsh chippy made his top 5

Man visits 120 chip shops across the UK and this Welsh chippy made his top 5 Stephen Peel, 62, has been eating at two fish and chip shops a week for the last 15 months in his quest to find the nation's best chippies - and now he's made his picks A dedicated fish and chip shop enthusiast who's travelled 120 UK chippies over a year has unveiled his top five picks. Stephen Peel, aged 62, embarked on a 15-month gastronomic adventure, dining at two different fish and chip shops weekly in a bid to discover the crème de la crème of British chippies. One Welsh fish & chip shop made the cut in Stephen's top five, though, joining fryers from Lancashire, Cornwall, Yorkshire and Cheshire. ‌ Crowning Green Lane Chippy in Leigh, Lancashire, as his personal best so far, with The Old Forge Cafe in Bugle, Cornwall, trailing close behind, Stephen, hailing from Penketh, Warrington, shared: "I've tried quite a lot of chippies so far on this journey but it has never gotten old - I still look forward to eating them every single time. I just love a good old traditional fish and chips - there is nothing that beats it for me." ‌ Rounding out Stephen's top five was Hennighan's Top Shop in Machynlleth, which has previously been named as one of the best in the UK. The family run shop has been going for forty years and they won best in in Wales, too, back in 2017. For more top Welsh fish & chip shops, click here. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here Stephen's tour, which he documents on his YouTube channel, here, said that Hennighan's 'delicious' pea fritters were 'the best' he'd tasted to date. The reviewer also liked the shop's potato doughnuts, tucked into some battered haddock and praised Hennighan's as a 'cracking little shop.' ‌ Kickstarting his 'Chippy Tour' to honour the cherished staple he believes the nation risks losing due to many establishments facing closure from escalating costs, Stephen assessed each chippy on several criteria. He judged them on a scale of five, taking into account customer service, cleanliness, presentation as well as the quality of the fare. He spends £30 at every chippy purchasing a battered sausage, steak and kidney pie, curry sauce, and a pea fritter alongside the chips - and has spent £3,600 in total. He further commented: "There's a lot that goes into getting a five star review - I also put a lot of pride into giving them. All aspects of the experience affect the score - for instance how friendly the staff are as for me manners are important. ‌ "How the shop is presented is also something I look out for too as I want to feel comfortable and welcome when I'm inside. Also those who sell other meals, like kebabs and pizzas. If the love for fish and chips doesn't come first then it may affect the score.", reports the Mirror. "I'm sharing the joy and the history of these iconic places - I want to do it right." Stephen gave a resoundingly postive 'oh' after tasting a pea fritter (Image: YouTube/The Chippy Tour ) ‌ Stephen remarks that to earn a top score of five, the place must be so impressive that visitors won't feel let down if they make a trip specifically to see it. He observed that fish and chip shop prices fluctuate across the UK: "On average nationwide it costs around £10 for a meal - up north it is a little bit cheaper as you normally pay £8 in my experience. But further down south you are looking to pay double the northern price." Stephen embarked on his quest in February last year when his wife's barber shop had to shut down due to competition from newer establishments. ‌ He reflected: "It got me thinking, this surely can't be the only business being affected. Fish and chips has always been my favourite since I was a lad. "Before long, I discovered that their numbers had dwindled dramatically over the past 30 years from 30,000 to about 10,000. It has become increasingly difficult for them to stay open with the rising prices. "So I started The Chippy Tour to celebrate the iconic dish and to try my best to keep the buzz of having a chippy alive." ‌ During his tour, he visited the UK's most affordable fish and chip shop, Mathews Chippy in Grimsby, Yorks, where his meal cost just £3 - a price he deemed "a lot more" than its value. Describing his ideal serving, he said: "There is a freshness to the fish with no discolouration - for me it doesn't matter if it is cod or haddock. I have no preference on the colour of the batter but as long as it isn't soggy underneath you are all good. "It has to look fresh and clean - when you break open the batter there should be a sweet earthy smell. For the chips you are looking for the light golden colour. ‌ "They need to be a bit plump while crispy on the outside but not too firm in the middle but also not overly soft - you are looking for the sweet spot. "Lastly, I prefer it cooked in beef dripping rather than vegetable oil - the flavours are much better this way." You can find Stephen's full list here.
