Daily Record22-05-2025

Edinburgh trams have alerted travellers to the incident.
A lorry has smashed into the glass door of an Edinburgh tram, claims a commuter.
The collision is understood to have taken place at around 5pm on on Thursday, May 22.

An eye witness told Edinburgh Live the lorry was turning from Dalmeny Street when the back end of the vehicle hit the tram and smashed the glass.

Glass " shattered everywhere" and passengers on board the tram were asked to disembark.
An image appeared to show a part of the tram's outer casing sticking in between the smashed doors.
Edinburgh Trams alerted travellers to the incident on social media with services now terminating at Balfour Street from Edinburgh Airport. They also advised customers a ticket sharing agreement is in place with Lothian Buses for those impacted.
In a statement on X, Edinburgh Trams said: "Due to tram incident at Balfour Street, we are currently running part route between Edinburgh Airport and Balfour Street.
"Customers travelling to Foot of the Walk, Shore, Port of Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven. Ticket acceptance is in place with Lothian Buses."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At 4.55pm on Thursday May 22, we received a report of a crash involving a tram and a lorry on Leith Walk in Edinburgh.

"One man received minor injuries but did not attend hospital."
Yesterday, in a separate incident, we reported that a 29-year-old man has been arrested by police in connection with a hit-and-run attempted murder on a Dumfries street.

A 28-year-old man was seriously injured after he is said to have been deliberately hit by a car in the town's Criffel Road on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
The emergency services raced to the scene, near to the town's Lincluden Road, at 11.20pm, after receiving a report that a car had deliberately crashed into a man.
The 28-year-old was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment and a police probe was launched. Officers said the driver fled the scene, heading towards College Road and onto Newbridge Drive.

They also said that a silver-coloured, five-door VW Golf with tinted rear windows was in the area at the time. And the force said today that a suspect had been arrested and charged.
A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the suspect is due to appear in the dock at Dumfries Sheriff Court tomorrow, Thursday, May 22, 2025 in connection with the case.
The investigation into the incident continues. Detective Inspector Scott Wilson said at the time: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing and we have been gathering CCTV footage from the surrounding area, which is being reviewed.

"Officers have also been carrying out door to door enquiries in the local area and will continue to do so. But I would also be very keen to speak anyone who was in the area at the time or has seen the car since then and may be able to assist our investigation.
"I would also like to hear from anyone who has dash cam, private CCTV or doorbell footage from the Lincluden area around the time of the incident.
"Any information, or footage, could prove vital, so please do pass it on to officers. Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 4575 of 17 May. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Driver has head sliced open by flying debris on M56

Cheshire Police is investigating after a man driving to work along the M56 had his head sliced open by a piece of flying debris. Welder Jake Gray was travelling from his home on Teesside to work in Warrington when an object smashed through his windscreen and cut down the side of his head. Police haven't identified what the object was but Jake, who is 31 and from Thornaby, says that he could have easily been killed: "I was about 10 minutes away from my side and in the third lane of the carriageway. "Something must have come across over the barrier as there was nothing directly in front of me. It's sliced straight through the windscreen, glass shattered in my face and it's gone out the rear window. "I don't know how but managed to pull over safely and that's when I called 999. It all happened in the blink of an eye. I screamed in panic. I noticed when I looked in the mirror that I had a big gash in the side of my face, past above my ear." Jake says the incident happened at around 6.15 am, adding that he waited at the side of the road holding his jumper to the side of his head to apply pressure waiting for emergency services to arrive. He said: "It must have hit a main vein right above my ear. I was jut trying to apply pressure. It could have been a different story. I could easily have been decapitated. "When the first police officer got here, he had a first aid kit and we were just trying to stop the bleeding - it was just relentless. "I think it's got to me some sort of metal material to do that damage. It's a clean slice through the window. The rear head rest was ripped out but there's no other debris in my car." Jake was taken to hospital and needed multiple stitches to the gash on his head and a CT scan revealed a fracture to his skull and a possible air pocket. Having stayed the night under observation, he was able to travel back home to Teesside with his mum the following day. Jake, whose VW Golf is in the garage, is now appealing for any witnesses to come forward and has asked anyone who may have dashcam footage from the M56 on Thursday morning (May 29) to come forward. After posting on Facebook about the incident, Jake says a number of people have reached out about possible sources of the object. He's also received dash-cam footage of a wagon pulled over on the opposite carriageway where the driver appears to be securing the load around the time of the incident. He says two vehicles - a white van and a black Mercedes - appear to be parked up in the hard shoulder in front of a red wagon. Jake is appealing for the drivers to come forward. Jake states:"I don't want any sympathy I just want to stop this happening again. "I want to get to the bottom of it to prevent this from happening to someone else," said Jake, who says he "can't thank the brilliant hospital staff enough." He says it's unclear as to whether the debris has come from the central reservation although it's more likely that it's come off another vehicle travelling down the opposite carriageway: "I don't want any sympathy, I just want to get to the bottom of it and make people aware so steps can be taken to prevent this from happening again." He's urging wagon drivers to ensure their load is secure and calls for the central reservation to be cleaned. "We pay our taxes for the carriageways to be kept in good order and we need to make sure they're kept clear." A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At around 6.15am on Thursday 29 May, police received reports of a road traffic incident on the M56 between junction 10 and 11. The caller reported an unknown object had hit his vehicle, smashing the windscreen and causing an injury to his head. "He was taken to hospital and later discharged. Enquiries are currently ongoing." A spokesman National Highways said: 'Our thoughts are with Mr Gray after this incident. While it would be inappropriate to comment on the details of this specific incident due the police investigation, National Highways has rigorous motorways inspection, reactive and routine maintenance regimes to tackle defects and remove debris. "In urgent cases we can and do close lanes or a carriageway to remove debris including after collisions or in cases where items have fallen from vehicles. The next planned 'sweep' of this section of the M56 is at the end of the month. Anyone spotting hazardous debris can report it to us, when they can do so safely, by calling our 24-7 customer contact centre on 0300 123 5000.'

Smuggler who claimed £5m coke haul was sombreros has jail sentence cut

Border Force stopped Kristopher Purvis in Edinburgh Airport's "nothing to declare" customs channel when he claimed all he brought back from Mexico was four sombreros. A drug smuggler who was caught with more than £5 million worth of cocaine after claiming that all he brought back from Mexico was four sombreros has won an appeal against his jail sentence. Kristopher Purvis was stopped by a Border Force officer in the "nothing to declare" customs channel at Edinburgh Airport with a friend and a haul of 45 kilos of the Class A drug was recovered. ‌ Purvis, 35, was jailed for 10 years in April this year after admitting being concerned in the supply of cocaine and being concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the ban on importing controlled drugs on July 24 last year at the airport. ‌ But lawyers acting for the drug smuggler challenged the sentence imposed on him before criminal appeal judges in Edinburgh claiming that the penalty imposed on him was excessive. Lady Wise, who heard the appeal with Lord Doherty, said: "In the whole circumstances we consider that a sentence of eight years and six months was appropriate." She said they would allow the appeal and quash the ten year jail term imposed by Lord Summers and substitute imprisonment for eight and a half years. Lord Summers selected a starting point for his sentence as 15 years but then reduced it by a third as he said Purvis pled guilty at the earliest opportunity. The appeal judges said the headline sentence should have been lower but disagreed that the plea came at the earliest possible time. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Purvis, of Mann Crescent, Murton, in County Durham, tendered his guilty pleas to the charge in March this year at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard that he arrived at Edinburgh airport after flying from Mexico via Paris before he was stopped. He and his companion each had a large black suitcase and Purvis was also carrying a bag with four multi-coloured sombreros. ‌ Prosecutor Brian Gill KC told the court: "He said that the only thing that he had acquired in Mexico was the sombreros." But a search of the cases found 15 vacuum sealed packages covered in mustard to put off sniffer dogs, with each package containing three kilos of cocaine. The maximum street value of the drugs was in excess of pounds 5.6 million. ‌ Purvis was told he was going to be questioned and responded: "It's all mine, my mate has nothing to do with it. I put it in his case." He was arrested and replied: "Yeah, alright I understand. I'm useless and f---ing stupid and I'm f---ed anyway." The court heard that Purvis stood to have a pounds 5000 debt wiped out and to be paid pounds 20,000 to bring the drugs into the UK. Defence solicitor advocate Simon Collins argued that the sentence imposed on the first offender was excessive and said he had "a limited involvement" in what would have been a very lucrative transaction for others with more significant roles in the drugs trade.

Fears toddler killed in chilling copycat crime of girl sold for 'eyes and skin'

The harrowing case of Kutlawano Shalaba has drawn comparisons to that of Racquel "Kelly" Smith, who was jailed last week for selling her daughter to a "healer" for just £800 A mother has appeared in court along with a "witch doctor" over the brutal murder of her two-year-old daughter, who is feared to have been sold and killed for her body parts. The haunting revelations brought shock back to South Africans that it could be a copycat case of evil mum Racquel 'Kelly' Smith, 35, who was jailed for life last week after selling her daughter for just £800. Schoolgirl Joshlin, 6, who vanished in February last year was never seen again after being sold - however in this latest case, a body was recovered and an alleged accomplice to the killing arrested. The details emerging from the latest case are renewing fears that up to a third of the more than 1000 children murdered each year in South Africa may be being targeted for body parts such as their skin and eyes. Police had been searching for six months for the missing 'son' of mum Kuneuwe Shalaba, 33, after she said 'he' was snatched from her by three kidnappers who sped off in a VW Golf near Johannesburg. But cops investigating her claim that toddler 'son' Kutlawano was grabbed in the street discovered that, just two hours before she reported the abduction, a large sum of money had appeared in her bank account. Mother-of-five Shalaba - who was struggling to make ends meet and feed her kids – received a year's money of R75000 from a mystery man, which she could not explain when detectives confronted her. Magistrates heard that she then not only confessed that she made up the kidnap story but had in fact led the police to believe they were trying to find her 'son' when the missing toddler was in fact a girl. Shalaba of Boipatong township 40 miles south of Johannesburg in Gauteng Province had her phone calls analysed, which led police to a sangoma or 'witch doctor' working out of a nearby taxi rank. National Police Authority spokesman Lumka Mahanjana said that when arrested, the sangoma confessed his part in the disappearance of the girl and led officers to an abandoned mine. Scenes of crime officers with shovels quickly discovered human remains which are currently undergoing a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death - and if any of the victim's body parts had been harvested. So called muti killings – the taking of body parts from murdered children by a small percentage of sangoma's to make 'black magic' potions for the rich – claim 50 to 300 victims every year in South Africa. Shalaba – who had been charged with human trafficking, conspiracy to commit robbery and making a false statement to police – was charged with premeditated murder when the body was discovered. NPA spokeswoman Miss Mahanjana confirmed that the sangoma named as Sebokoana Khounyana, 50, had also been charged with premeditated murder and human trafficking along with the girl's mother. The prosecution believes Kutlwano – who was dressed as a boy and introduced to family and friends as a boy – was murdered on November 10 and that the mother reported him kidnapped on November 13. She was arrested on November 19 at home in Boipatong 40 miles south of Johannesburg and her daughter's body was found on May 29 buried in a shallow grave in the nearby town of Randfontein. NPA spokesman Miss Mahanjana confirmed a post-mortem was underway to ascertain 'exactly what was done to the child' before death and whether any body parts were harvested from it. The shocking sale of little Kutlwano appears to be a chilling copycat case of that of an evil mother who was jailed for life last week for selling her six-year-old daughter for just £800. Racquel 'Kelly' Smith, 35, was said to have been sought out by a traditional healer who wanted her daughter Joshlin for her 'light eyes and skin' - the girl 'vanished' from her township and was never seen again. Last Thursday the mother-of-three was sentenced to life behind bars by Judge Nathan Erasmus for human trafficking by selling her daughter Joshlin and for kidnapping her given an additional 10 years. Her boyfriend Jacquen Apollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were also given life sentences for their part in the shocking kidnap and sale of tragic Joshlin at Saldanha Bay 80 miles north of Cape Town. The fun loving schoolgirl was last seen outside her home last February and the 8 week trial at the community centre in Saldanha Bay heard she was almost certainly sold into 'exploitation and slavery'. The South African Police insisted that the search for her will continue 'night and day' until she is found and have begged her mother to reveal what happened to Joshlin but she refused to co-operate. The court heard drug user Kelly had told friends and a local pastor she had sold Joshlin for R20,000 (£835) in February last year to a sangoma and was later charged by police over her disappearance. The case rocked South Africa and highlighted the hundreds of cases throughout Africa of 'healers' – known as sangomas or 'witch doctors' – who take children to use body parts to make 'miracle potions'. So far in neither the Joshlin or Kutlawano cases this fate is strongly feared but has not yet been proved. Huge superstition still holds sway over large parts of the African population who highly respect and fear the sangomas and pay them large amounts of money for their so called 'black magic' potions. Between April 2024 and March 2025 South African Police figures revealed some 1100 children were murdered but as there is no specific category for muti killings it is estimated at between 50 and 300 a year. Both accused killers Shalaba and Khounyana will appear before the same magistrate on June 5.
