Taiwan: SEF chairman slams China's 'united front' tactics, calls for sincerity in cross-Strait relations

Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Chairman Frank Wu urged China to abandon its controversial "united front" operations, saying that such tactics, alongside political interference and military provocations , only provoke resentment among the Taiwanese people.Speaking at the seventh SEF board meeting held in Taipei on Friday, Wu emphasised that "United front" is a commonplace phrase in China; however, people of Taiwan consider it swear words, as it stands for Beijing's efforts to infiltrate and sow division in their nation.Despite persistent tensions, Wu pointed to a rare point of agreement between leaders in Taipei and Beijing, the mutual desire for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations . He said China can either bring peace and improve lives across the Strait by complying with this agreement, or earn the mockery of history and prove the hollowness of its words by not acting on this agreement.He said, "For many years, our opposite number insisted that the peoples across the Strait share the same racial origins and language in hopes that Taiwanese would join the symphony of the Chinese family."He condemned China's ongoing deployment of military aircraft and naval vessels around Taiwan. Wu said, "This song is very much lost amid the ceaseless political infiltration [of Taiwan] and the deafening din of [Chinese] warships and jets."He stated that people of Taiwan would not accept this "deviation between [China's] words and actions." Referencing Taiwan President Lai Ching-te consistent call for peaceful dialogue since his May 2024 inauguration, Wu warned that lasting peace is impossible without sincere mutual respect.He further urged China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits to abandon "ancient grudges borne by long-dead men" and focus on benefiting the living.According to Taipei Times, Wu concluded by urging China to find optimism in Taiwan's achievements rather than viewing them as threats.

ABUJA, - West African nations want to strike deals with the U.S. over energy and rare earth minerals, but the Trump administration's looming expansion of travel bans risks derailing those efforts, Nigeria's foreign minister said on Wednesday. U.S. President Donald Trump this month implemented full or partial travel bans for foreign nationals from a dozen countries as part of his immigration crackdown. A possible broadening of the restrictions to an additional 36 countries would include nearly all of West Africa. "This would be most unfortunate if it comes to pass, because we are a region of opportunities ready to do deals," said Nigeria's Yussuf Tuggar, who currently chairs regional bloc ECOWAS's council of foreign ministers. President Trump has upended longstanding trade relations since returning to the White House, using erratic tariff threats and aggressive tactics in a bid to secure better deals from trading partners. As part of an agreement with Beijing, for example, Trump said China will supply the U.S. with magnets and rare earth minerals critical to the auto and battery industries in exchange for Chinese students' continued access to U.S. universities. "We possess critical minerals and even rare earths," Tuggar told West African government ministers, citing the example of samarium - used for military-grade magnets and nuclear reactor control rods - found in his home state in Nigeria. "We would like to do deals with the U.S., but visa restrictions are non-tariff barriers to deals," he said. He also touted the oil and gas-rich region as an energy partner. "We are also a strategic alternative to more distant and politically divergent energy producers. So, we will do deals for our prosperity. The only question is with whom," he said. The U.S. has cited reasons for the bans including governments' failure to produce reliable identity documents, corruption, and high volumes of visa overstays by certain countries' citizens.

China, Russia watch on as Trump weighs Iran strike to aid Israel
As Iran stands battered, and likely stands on the verge of defeat, in the war with Israel, Russia and China are anxiously watching the collapse of their principal ally in West Asia. Even if Iran survives, they would still have a host of problems. (Sergei Bobylyov/Reuters) As US President Donald Trump appears to be preparing to join Israel in the war on Iran, China and Russia are anxiously following the developments as their principal ally in the West Asia stands battered — and likely on the verge of defeat. Over the past many years, China has emerged as a leader of an anti-Western bloc that also comprised Russia, Iran, and North Korea. A defeat of Iran, or worse a regime change, would be catastrophic blow to the bloc and China and Russia's ability to project power in West Asia. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Both China and Russia have offered to mediate between Israel and Iran, but the offer has found no taker in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. The anxious wait for China and Russia appears set to last for a while as the war is nowhere near its conclusion. Even though Israel has decapitated Iranian military, assassinated the military and scientific brass, and battered its armaments, it has barely damaged the regime's nuclear programme — the main target of the war. Israel does not have the means to neutralise Iranian underground nuclear sites like Fordow. For that, Israel needs American 'bunker buster' munitions and specialised planes to launch them. While Trump has positioned aircraft and warships in the region, he has maintained that Iran wants to make a deal and it appears that he is giving the regime one last chance at negotiations. Russia loses yet another ally After the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Russia appears set to lose another ally in the region in Iran. Even if Iran survives the war, it has already been reduced to a shadow of its former self by the Israeli bombardment. Previously, Russia projected power along the southern flank of Nato through ports and airbases in Syria. After losing those footholds, the alliance with Iran remained the main way for Russia to project power in the region. As Iran's defeat appears to be just a matter of time, Russia appears set to lose that as well. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD China stares at energy crisis As the largest buyer of Iranian oil, the disruption in supplies from the war could affect the country. Moreover, as disruption spreads, or worse if the conflict spreads in the region, China's energy imports from other countries, such as the Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE), could also be affected. The problem may not be unique to China as around at least a fifth of world's all petroleum supplies transit through the region. 'It's an energy security risk. For a country already suffering under the strain of an economic downturn and a trade war [with the US], it's not an ideal scenario,' Tuvia Gering, a China and Middle East specialist at Israel's Institute of National Security Studies, told The Daily Telegraph. Neither Russia nor China can help Iran Even as China and Russia would want Iran to survive the war, there is little they can do support their ally. While Russia is bogged down in its own war against Ukraine, China would not risk a rupture with the United States with any overt military support to Iran at a time when the two sides are trying to mend ties. Moreover, there is little China can do as it is too far to provide arms and any air bridge would risk getting bogged into a conflict with Israel and the United States. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As for Russia, the regime is reliant on North Korea and China to sustain its war on Ukraine and on China to sustain its economy. As the country is dependent on North Korea for soldiers and artillery and on Russia for everything from heavy machinery and raw material to make weapons to consumer goods for the general public, it is not in any shape to support Iran in the war with the Israel-US combine. 'The collapse of the current regime would be a significant blow and would generate a lot of instability in the Middle East, ultimately undermining Chinese economic and energy interests,' Andrea Ghiselli, a scholar of China's relations in West Asia and North Africa, told The Telegraph. Despite such limitations, there has been some speculation about some Chinese help to Iran. The Telegraph has reported that multiple aircraft originating from China appear to have arrived in Iran deceptively in recent days. While the contents or occupants of the aircraft were not known, the newspaper reported that the planes were Boeing 747 freighters that are commonly used to transport military equipment and weapons and are chartered to fly government-owned cargo. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While 'the likelihood remains low' of China overtly helping Iran militarily, the possibility 'should not be dismissed and must be closely monitored', Tuvia told the newspaper. China, Russia to face problems even if Iran survives Even if Iran somehow survives the war, China and Russia would still have problems. Observers have said that if Iran survives the war, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei would have no option other than developing a nuclear weapon to restore lost deterrence. Russia and China do not want that. Firstly, Russia and China do not want the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Secondly, Russia and China do not Iran to outgrow its junior position in the bloc. If it would acquire nuclear weapons, the hold of China and Russia over Iran would weaken.

Israel and Iran have been trading drones and strikes for six days, plunging West Asia into uncertainty. Amid heightened tensions, foreigners have started fleeing the two countries. However, the closure of huge areas of airspace across West Asia has caused travel disruptions. Here's how nations are evacuating their nationals. India asks citizens to leave Tehran As the Israel-Iran conflict intensified, India on Tuesday (June 17) asked its nationals to leave Tehran, the Iranian capital. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement: 'Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for reasons of safety, through arrangements made by the Embassy'. Iran shares land borders with seven countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Afghanistan, Iraq , Pakistan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan. Of the more than 100 Indian evacuees, 90 are from Jammu and Kashmir. These Indian students are expected to land in Delhi at 10.15 pm on Wednesday, reported NDTV. They were seen boarding a connecting IndiGo flight at an airport in Doha. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has also set up emergency helplines for its nationals in Iran. China, other Asian countries ask citizens to move out China has urged its nationals to leave Israel and Iran 'as soon as possible'. The Asian giant said that its Foreign Ministry and diplomatic missions in the two enemy nations had promptly deployed 'emergency consular protection mechanisms' as hostilities broke and were 'actively assisting' Chinese nationals seeking to leave. The Japanese embassy in Iran said Tuesday it was considering evacuating its citizens by bus to a neighbouring country by June 19. Thailand told its citizens to leave the Iranian capital as soon as possible. The Thai Embassy in Tehran has also established a temporary shelter for Thai citizens in the historic Iranian city of Amol, about 20 kilometres south of the Caspian Sea. The Thai government said it is ready to evacuate its citizens from Iran and Israel if necessary. 'The government has prepared all necessary measures to help Thai workers,' Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Tuesday. Pakistan has started repatriating hundreds of its citizens from Iran and Iraq since tensions heightened between Tehran and Israel last week. Pakistanis are barred from travelling to Israel. The European Union's top diplomat said Tuesday the European Commission is assisting EU countries to evacuate their citizens from Israel. Poland, Czechia, Latvia and Lithuania announced they were evacuating citizens from Israel. The UK government has advised its nationals against travelling to Israel and the occupied territories, as well as Iran. Russia's ambassador to Israel asked Russian nationals to leave until the situation improves, reported the state news agency, Tass. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian Embassy in Tehran was working 'around the clock' to ensure citizens could leave Iran through a checkpoint on the border with Azerbaijan. 'All (Russian) citizens who are in Tehran and got in touch (with the embassy), for all of them the possibility of evacuating is being provided,' Peskov said. According to the Russian Embassy in Tehran, hundreds of people had already left Iran via the Astara border crossing on the Caspian Sea coast into Azerbaijan. 'Terror attacks can occur anywhere at any time, including by lone actors,' it said in an advisory. Slovakia and the Czech Republic have taken 139 people home from Israel, who arrived in their respective countries on government planes on Monday. Cyprus, the closest EU country to Israel, said Portugal and Slovakia sought its help to repatriate their citizens. Turkmenistan said it gave a nod to the transit of around 120 evacuees from Iran through its territory, mostly citizens of Central Asian countries. Those who reached were provided food, accommodation and other essential items, according to the Foreign Ministry in Ashgabat. Albania has appreciated the Greek and Bulgarian Embassies in Israel's Tel Aviv for helping its citizens in Israel. The Albanians are in Egypt, from where they are likely to head home. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD How many foreigners have been evacuated? Hundreds of foreigners have left Iran through land routes amid its conflict with Israel. Over 700 foreign nationals have crossed from Iran into neighbouring Azerbaijan and Armenia since the conflict began last week, government officials in Baku and Yerevan said on Tuesday. 'Since the start of the military escalation between Israel and Iran, more than 600 citizens of 17 countries have been evacuated from Iran via Azerbaijan,' a government source told AFP. The evacuees, who crossed the border via the Astara checkpoint, were being taken to the Baku airport and 'flown to their home countries on international flights,' the source said. Those evacuated are citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Germany, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Portugal, the US, the UAE, China and Vietnam.
