Bradford to get new padel centre for fast-growing racquet sport
Plans to build a new centre in Bradford for the emerging racquet sport of padel have been approved.Padel, whose popularity has surged in popularity in recent years, dates back to the 1960s and has similar rules to lawn tennis, but is played indoors on much smaller courts. At a meeting earlier this week, Bradford Council gave the go-ahead to the new five-court facility at Beckside Business Park in Lidget Green, with planning officers predicting it would create some new jobs.Councillors heard there were already padel facilities in nearby Ilkley and Rawdon, but this would be the first dedicated centre for the sport in the city of Bradford.
The planning application for the facility, which will have 13 parking spaces, was submitted by Fahad Qureshi, according to Local Democracy Reporting Service.Officers told the meeting: "Given the existing leisure uses within the surrounding units of the application site, it is considered the proposal would be suitable in this location."They added: "Although the use in itself is not a typical employment-generating use, it would nevertheless create an acceptable level of employment within an employment zone."Celebrities such as David Beckham and Eva Longoria are said to be avid fans of the sport, which is a blend of tennis and squash. The game was invented in Mexico in 1969 and there are now said to be 30 million players across the world.Listen to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here.

Victoria Beckham breaks silence on David's knighthood as she also gets new title
Former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham has said she 'could not be prouder' of her husband David Beckham after he was knighted in the King's Birthday Honours. The former England captain, who played for his country 115 times, was honoured for his services to sport and charity. He married the now Lady Beckham, also known as Posh Spice, in 1999 and the pair share four children together, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. In a post shared on Saturday on Instagram, Lady Beckham said: 'You've always been my knight in shining armour, but now it's official. Sir @davidbeckham!!! 'What an honour, I couldn't be prouder of you. Your dedication to the things that matter most — your country, your work, your passion, and most of all, your family — has never wavered. 'The way you've touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are and continues to inspire us everyday. 'But above all else, I'm so, so proud to call you mine. I love you so much xxxx.' The football star, who was formerly appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, responded to the post by expressing his love for his family, mentioning each of his children and adding 'I love you all'. Sir David first made his Premier League debut for United in 1995 and was part of the team that earned a dramatic Champions League final victory in 1999 when they beat Bayern Munich with two late goals. In total he scored 85 goals and collected honours including six Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a footballer, before retiring from the sport in 2013. Alongside his footballing career, the sports star is also a supporter of a number of charity causes including being a founding member of the charity Malaria No More UK's leadership council. Sir David was also named as an ambassador last year for the King's Foundation, an educational charity established by the King in 1990 and has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the humanitarian aid organisation Unicef since 2005. In a statement to the PA News Agency, Sir David said: 'Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. 'Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. 'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. 'It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' The businessman is also the co-founder of Studio99, the production company behind the hit Netflix series, Beckham, and is a part-owner of MLS side Inter Miami. He is also known for his fashion and was named most stylish man of the year by GQ magazine in 1998, has modelled for the likes of H&M, Armani and Boss, and was appointed ambassadorial president of the British Fashion Council (BFC) in 2018 where he assisted in its search for young British talent from all backgrounds. Sir David is not the only fashion star in the family, with his wife Lady Beckham launching an eponymous fashion label in 2008 followed by a beauty brand in 2019.

Victoria Beckham and kids congratulate Becks for long-awaited knighthood – but Brooklyn remains silent amid feud
Within hours of The Sun breaking the news recently that David would get his knighthood, social media was flooded with messages of congratulations. 6 6 6 The footie legend, 50, becomes a 'Sir' in the King's Birthday Honours list. Meaning his Spice Girl wife Victoria will be known as Lady Beckham - and she 'couldn't be prouder.' Victoria took to social media on Saturday to share a sweet photo hugging her husband, and planting a kiss on his cheek. The fashion designer penned a lengthy caption, which read: 'You've always been my knight in shining armour, but now it's official. Sir @davidbeckham!!! What an honour, I couldn't be prouder of you. 'Your dedication to the things that matter most — your country, your work, your passion, and most of all, your family — has never wavered. 'The way you've touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are and continues to inspire us everyday. But above all else, I'm so, so proud to call you mine. I love you so much xxxx' Victoria wasn't the only one of the Beckham clan to share their congratulations, with Romeo Beckham also posting on his social media. He shared a black and white snap from David's 50th birthday in May, and wrote: 'So so proud of you,' followed by heart emojis. Cruz Beckham also shared some kind words for his dad, and posted a photo of him sitting outdoors gazing at the camera. David's youngest son wrote: 'I'm so proud dad I love you. Sir David Beckham has a nice ring to it.' As of yet, David and Victoria's eldest son, Brooklyn, hasn't shared a message of congratulations publicly for his father. But including all his family in his celebratory knighthood statement, David wrote: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. What do David Beckham's tattoos mean? Hands Starting with the hands, and David Beckham has the word "Love" inked across the top of his left hand, with a swallow on either side. This is joined by the numbers 723, a combination of the shirts he famously wore for Manchester United and later Real Madrid. On his little finger, he has the year he was married. Becks also has a small female-stick figure designed by his daughter Harper. The devoted husband has "Posh' tattooed on a finger as a nod to wife Victoria Beckham 's Spice Girls nickname. Arms Becks has two sleeve tattoos on both his arms with the centrepieces paying tribute to his marriage to Victoria. The most famous of his body art comes in the shape of her name along the inside of his forearm, which is inked in Sanskrit. Both Posh and Becks have Hebrew tattoos, which they got to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary. The matching tatts translate to, "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine". Meanwhile, Becks also has a separate rose inking on his left arm to mark the couple's tenth anniversary. Neck One of Beckham's most famous tattoos is on his neck, which is a gothic style cross and wings. It is symbolic of to his religion and acts as a protective guardian of his son Romeo, whose name is tattooed just below the angel wings. Beckham also has the name of his daughter, Harper, on the side of his neck. This was later updated to include the words "Pretty Lady", to mark her fourth birthday. Back Beckham's back tattoos serve as tribute to his sons. He has angel wings at the top as a sign of protection for them. Becks has both his eldest on Brooklyn, and his youngest son Cruz 's names inked across his back. Body Beckham has a large chest tattoo that is an image of himself as Jesus, with three cherubs representing his sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz. The footy ace also has a vertical tattoo down his left side in Chinese symbols - this translates as 'Death and life have determined appointments". Paying homage to his father, he has an inking of a ship at full mast - which is identical to the same one his dad has. 'It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' David's exciting achievement comes after his 26-year-old Brooklyn, who lives in LA with wife Nicola Peltz, 30, was revealed to have no desire to speak to his parents or siblings after only learning about his dad's knighthood in the press, an insider told Page Six. The sourced said: "Brooklyn told his family he wants no contact and he's not responding to those that try to connect.' However, a source close to Brooklyn denied this and said, "this seems to be another deliberate attempt to misrepresent the truth, and it only serves to distract from this honor being bestowed on Brooklyn's father." David was first put forward for a knighthood in 2011 after helping to secure the London 2012 Olympics. But he was blocked from getting the title by the Honours Committee after becoming caught up in a tax avoidance scheme, along with many other stars. His finances were cleared by the taxman at least four years ago - paving the way for him to finally get the coveted honour. Just weeks ago we revealed how David and Victoria feel there might be no way to reconcile with their eldest child. Brooklyn, who was a no-show at David's star-studded 50th birthday celebrations last month, shared a video of himself and Nicola riding on his motorbike and wrote: 'My whole world. I will love you forever. I always choose you baby.' 6 6 6

Inter Miami's Club World Cup controversy as Beckham and Messi prepare for bow
David Beckham's Inter Miami are set to star at the FIFA Club World Cup with Lionel Messi in tow, but their qualification for the revamped tournament was somewhat controversial David Beckham's Inter Miami are all set to host the FIFA Club World Cup opener with frontman Lionel Messi, but the side's inclusion in the tournament initially sparked backlash. The MLS franchise were selected as one of the 32 participating teams in October last year. The revamped Club World Cup selects top sides from across the globe to do battle over a month-long competition in the United States, and it will kick off with perennial Egyptian champions Al Ahly facing Beckham's outfit in front of an anticipated 62,000-strong Miami crowd. Inter Miami were named Supporters' Shield winners last year after amassing an MLS record 74 regular-season points. However, this did not mean they were crowned MLS champions. The accolade they claimed is a trophy given to the side with the best regular-season record. While the Florida-based club then progressed into the MLS play-offs, they lost in the first round to Atlanta United. Nonetheless, their place at the Club World Cup was confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino under rather controversial circumstances, as the selection criteria had not been laid out at the time, and eventual MLS champions, LA Galaxy, would eventually be omitted. Co-owner Beckham once plied his trade in Los Angeles, and it was on the back of this move that, 11 years ago, the ball got rolling on the Manchester United icon investing in an MLS expansion franchise. Inter Miami began playing in 2020, and three years later, they secured the groundbreaking signing of global superstar Messi from PSG. Their purpose-built Freedom Park stadium is set to open in 2026. The marketability and pull of stars like Messi and some of his team-mates, including Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are why many were quick to criticise FIFA's decision to hastily include Inter Miami as the host team of the Club World Cup, as they accused FIFA of favoritism. Speaking in October at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale after Inter Miami had beaten New England Revolution, president Infantino confirmed the club's qualification, and admitted: "Miami loves football, the world loves football, and the world loves Miami. So I have three things to tell you. "The first, many congratulations for winning the Supporters' Shield. And on top, with the record of points in Major League Soccer. Congratulations, you are the best team of the season in America. "Second, based on this outstanding performance of this year you deserve to be, and you will be, for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025," he revealed. "And third, as the host team of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, you will have the honour of opening the tournament by hosting the opening game here in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium in front of 65,000 people and tens of millions at home." Chelsea and Manchester City will join Inter Miami at the Club World Cup. The English pair qualified for the competition after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Enzo Maresca's side begin their campaign on Monday against Los Angeles FC, and the Cityzens face an unknown entity in the form of 2022 CAF Champions League winners Wydad AC, or WAC Casablanca, on Wednesday. The tournament runs from June 15 until July 13, with the final scheduled to take place at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
