Grand Rapids to consider designating street in honor of teen who was shot, killed

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The street where 15-year-old Amillier Penn was shot and killed while playing football with some friends could soon bear his name.
Penn's father, Corey Penn, and Seeds of Promise GR have asked the city of Grand Rapids to designate Umatilla Street SE from Madison Avenue to Union Avenue as 'Amillier Penn Way.' The designation would honor the 15-year-old who was shot and killed there on June 2, 2024.
Father won't watch GRPD docuseries episode on son's killing: 'I'm still living it'
On Tuesday, the city of Grand Rapids Community Development Committee scheduled a public hearing on the requested commemorative street name designation for June 10, just over a year after Penn was killed. All owners of properties directly abutting that block of Umatilla Street will be notified of the hearing by mail, according to city documents.
Commemorative street name designations do not rename streets, but would put the designation — typically on a blue sign — under the normal green street sign.
'Street designation is certainly a small way to remember such a young life taken, and I hope that it can also serve as a little bit of comfort to the family,' Second Ward Commissioner Milinda Ysasi said during Tuesday's meeting, adding she hopes the designation will encourage people with information on Penn's killing to come forward.
GRPD docuseries names uncharged suspect in death of teen: Could that hurt the case?
No one has been charged in Penn's death, which was the focus of the first episode of 'All Access PD: Grand Rapids.' The docuseries episode included the name of a potential suspect. News 8 is not naming the individual because they have not been charged with a crime at this time.

Family remembers Amillier Penn 1 year after shooting death

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Monday marks one year since 15-year-old Amillier Penn was in broad daylight while playing football with friends in southeast Grand Rapids. For his father, Corey Penn, the pain and sense of loss is always there. 'It just reopened wounds for me,' he said. 'Not ever want to imagine where I'm at right now in life, would never want to imagine losing a child.' It took nearly a year until the accused killer, 17-year-old Cartiyae Pascal, was charged with open murder. Police said they interviewed hundreds of people but few cooperated, leading to a much longer investigation. Pascal has already been behind bars since last fall because he was with attempted murder in a different shooting. Pascal is being charged as an adult for Penn's death. 17-year-old charged with murder in shooting of 15-year-old in Grand Rapids As the criminal case gets underway, Corey Penn is hoping for justice but notes that none of it will bring his son back. 'That's a forever stain on our entire family,' he said. Those who knew Amillier Penn, known as Milli, came together Sunday evening to remember him with a celebration of life at Garage Bar in Grand Rapids. Corey Penn wore a sweatshirt with Milli's name on it. Other supporters wore clothing with his face across the front and the words '4ever' across the back. 'We're just gonna keep marching behind Milli,' Corey Penn said. 'We're gonna keep demanding justice, we're there. But when a conviction comes, that's when I'll be able to say justice has been served.' 'We love you, Milli,' he added. 'Always and forever.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. BJ Penn arrested for 3rd time in last week amid family issues

The post BJ Penn arrested for 3rd time in last week amid family issues appeared first on ClutchPoints. UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn was arrested on Friday, May 30, for the third time in the past week. The former UFC fighter has been claiming that his family has been murdered and replaced by imposters. Penn was arrested for failing to appear in court, which violated his bail agreement. Penn claimed that he did not show up to court due to contracting COVID-19, but the claim was unsuccessful, according to the Hawaiian news outlet KHON2. Penn's last arrest followed the former UFC star being in handcuffs on Sunday (May 25) and then again on Monday (May 26). He was arrested on charges of abuse of a family or household member in both incidents. His mother, Lorraine Shin, has filed a temporary restraining order against her son as she claims that Penn 'grabbed my arms and shoved me against the 4-door gray sedan, which I felt a sharp pain in my back,' on May 25 and called out for her younger son, Reagan, to help her. He was ordered to stay away from his mother's home for 48 hours, but she claims he was caught breaking in the next day. He was arrested for violating the legal order. She noticed that items from her bedroom, 'such as clothes, shoes, jewelry, personal items' went missing as well as 'with my driver's license, credit card and locks for my safe,' were stolen. Shin filed a police report after the items from her room went missing as Penn denied tampering with her items. Since belongings around the house were being misplaced, she installed a security camera which she claims Penn 'also put glue into my dead bolts that stopped me from opening my bedroom door.' Shin believes that her son is suffering from a mental disorder. 'I believe my son [B.J. Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome [a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter],' Shin wrote in a statement provided to authorities. 'He believes I'm an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.' Penn earned two UFC titles (Welterweight and Lightweight) and was later inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2015. He currently holds the record for most UFC Lightweight title defenses and was the first non-Brazilian to win the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. His last fight was in 2019. After being caught in street fighting videos, UFC CEO Dana White released him from the organization. 'He won't fight again. That's it. That's a wrap,' White said in 2019. 'It's not even that this was the last straw. I didn't love him continuing to fight anyway. But when you have the relationship that he and I have, and he's getting me on the phone begging me for another fight, begging me for another opportunity, it's hard for me to turn him down. But after what I saw on that video, B.J. needs to focus on his personal life and get himself together before he thinks about fighting again.'

GRPD promises consequences for dangerous car meetups 'Sometimes the leaders will say something like, 'I'm not committing a crime, I'm just organizing the activity and what people do when they're there, that's their responsibility.' At some point in time, that argument doesn't really hold true anymore,' Winstrom said last year. 'When you know that every time you're calling this meeting together that very dangerous illegal activity will occur and that it's going to impact the city, we're going to do everything, use every tool in our toolbox to hold them accountable,' Winstrom said in 2024. Police have said that car meetups generally involve teens or young adults. Winstrom urged parents to ensure that their children are safe, especially late at night.
