Mountie charged with driving offences after B.C. crash
VICTORIA – An RCMP officer faces two charges under the Motor Vehicle Act after a crash in southeastern B.C. last Canada Day that left three people injured.
The BC Prosecution Service announced that Const. Christopher Odgaard is accused of driving without due care and failing to safely execute a U-turn.
The allegations come after B.C.'s police watchdog referred its investigation to the prosecution service for consideration of charges earlier this year.
The Independent Investigations Office said in a statement in April that the officer conducted a U-turn on Highway 3 near Greenwood, B.C., setting off a crash with a vehicle that had four people inside.
The office said one person in that vehicle was seriously hurt, while two others had minor injuries.
The prosecution service says the charges were sworn against the officer in Grand Forks provincial court on Tuesday, and he's set to make his first court appearance on June 30.

RCMP in Taloyoak, Nunavut, have charged four girls with arson in connection to a fire at the community's old home economics building. In a news release Friday afternoon, RCMP said officers responded to a complaint at about 6:35 p.m. on June 8 that the building was on fire. Surrey, B.C., police launch team to counter extortions in South Asian community
Social Sharing A series of reports of extortion from people and businesses in the South Asian community have prompted a wider investigation by police in Surrey, B.C. The Surrey Police Service said in a statement that it is working with provincial and national RCMP to help in their investigations, as numerous Canadian police agencies have reported similar crimes. Police said they've had 10 complaints over the last six months of people getting letters, phone calls or social media messages demanding money under threats of violence. The service said it has launched its own extortion investigations team and will be attending a public safety forum on Sunday in the city organized by members of the South Asian community. It's to be held at Reflections banquet hall on 152A Street at 2 p.m. Forum organizer Satish Kumar, the president of the city's Lakshmi Narayan Mandir temple, is also announcing a $100,000 reward to encourage the community to help bring an end to the extortion and violence. Surrey police Chief Norm Lipinski said it's important to tackle the extortion trend head-on, but it's equally important to collaborate with victims and the broader community to deal with it together. RCMP Chief Supt. Wendy Mehat, with the Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, said they are concerned there may be more victims who have complied with demands and haven't gone to police.

Man charged following drug trafficking investigation in Sussex, N.B.
Drugs and other items seized from a residence in Sussex, N.B., on June 12, 2025 are pictured. A 24-year-old man from Sussex, N.B. was charged following a drug trafficking investigation. Colton Bernard of Sussex, N.B., was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in Saint John Provincial Court on Friday. He was remanded into custody and will appear in court again on June 26. On Thursday, RCMP searched a residence on George Street in Sussex and arrested Bernard without incident, said a news release. During the search, police recovered quantities of what are believed to be crystal meth, ICE pills and cocaine. Police also seized: various prescription pills drug paraphernalia four cell phones a rifle ammunition New Brunswick RCMP began the drug trafficking investigation in Sussex in April, said the release.
