Ex-Thai DPM: Myanmar Must End Conflict Or Face Humanitarian Crisis

PHNOM PENH, May 30 (Bernama) -- Former Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prof Dr Surakiart Sathirathai said Myanmar military leaders and all resistance groups must end the conflict immediately, failing which could drive the nation into a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
Surakiart, who was also the former Thai foreign minister, said the derailed peace process coupled with the recent earthquake has only punished millions of innocent Myanmar people.

At least 3.5 million have been displaced internally due to the armed conflict and the March earthquake killed over 3,800 people.
According to the Myanmar Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, 15.2 million or one in four people are already facing hunger in 2025.
The current ceasefire, declared by the junta to facilitate relief efforts post-earthquake, will expire on May 31.
'2025 is a crucial year for peace in Myanmar. We have to work together to ensure that the ceasefire and inclusive dialogue can take place before the election.
'The fighting on the ground that we have seen in the past years has come to the point that no one can win total control of the territory in Myanmar,' Surakiart, currently the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council Chairman, told Bernama from Bangkok.
The veteran politician served as Thailand's deputy prime minister between 2005 and 2006 and was the foreign minister from 2001 to 2005.

PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) -- The percentage of public transport usage in Malaysia has only reached 20 per cent to date, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the figure remains below the 40 per cent target outlined in the National Transport Policy 2019–2030. 'The national transport policy from 2019 to 2030 is already in place. Commenting further, Loke said the implementation of the 'Road to Rail' initiative is currently being carried out in phases and is expected to have a significant impact on the country's logistics sector. 'We are actively promoting the use of rail. That's why one of our focus initiatives is 'Road to Rail' , to encourage more usage of railways for the transportation of containers and goods,' he said. 'When the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is completed, it will boost the use of rail to transport goods and containers to the East Coast, thereby reducing reliance on road transport such as lorries,' he added. -- BERNAMA

PM Anwar Proposes Strategic Housing Development Near Public Transport
GENERAL PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that new people's housing projects be developed on or near public transport stations, as a move to encourage more comprehensive use of the public transport system. Anwar said that such a housing development concept would not only provide more strategic residences for low-income groups but also pave the way for a more sustainable and organised urban lifestyle. 'There are proposals to develop housing directly on top of public transport stations, but this requires certain amendments (to laws) and is currently being worked on. 'An example is the Kota MADANI project, where I emphasised comprehensive and centralised basic amenities for the welfare of the people, including vertical development,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Malaysia MADANI Scholars' Forum (FIM) Series 6 at Menara Prasarana here, tonight. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), discussed the topic 'Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport'. Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Meanwhile, Anwar said that open discourse platforms like the forum were crucial to ensure government policies were formulated by considering the voices of various parties, including academicians, industry experts, government supporters, and even the opposition. Anwar said the organisation of such forums proved that the government did not shut down criticism, but instead encouraged differing views, provided they were delivered professionally and constructively.

Fahmi congratulates sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil extended his congratulations to sign language interpreter, Tan Lee Bee, who was awarded the Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Monday. Fahmi also shared a photo with Tan and Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching on his Facebook post. 'Met Lee Bee at the Royal Tea Reception in Istana Negara earlier today. May you continue to excel. Thank you for being a 'silent hero' who always inspire and enrich our TV screens with full dedication and spirit,' the post read. The Royal Tea Reception was a specially arranged event in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's Official Birthday. Bernama had earlier reported that Tan began her work as a sign language interpreter out of love for her hearing-impaired younger sibling. She learned sign language to help her sibling and also served as a teacher for 17 years for the hearing impaired. Since 1994, Tan has been the first sign language interpreter at the Federal Court of Malaysia, while her involvement in broadcasting began around 1985, through the program Selamat Pagi Malaysia on RTM, and later also became a sign language interpreter for RTM news broadcasts and official communication videos.
