Kimi Antonelli got a three-place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix after colliding with Max Verstappen in Austria. Antonelli apologized, and Verstappen accepted.
Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming British Grand Prix after the stewards found him at fault for a collision with Max Verstappen on Lap 1 in Austria yesterday.
After starting from P9 on the grid, Antonelli locked up the rear brakes of his Mercedes in Turn 3, causing him to hit Verstappen's Red Bull, which put both cars out of the race.

Both were summoned to the stewards over the incident, where the verdict was that Antonelli was 'fully at fault" for what happened, though it was also acknowledged that the move had been a 'result of the evasive action after locking up".

Given that the teenager was unable to continue in the race, the penalty decided upon was a three-place grid drop for the next race, that being Silverstone next weekend on July 4-6, as well as two penalty points on his licence.
Speaking after his early exit from the race at the Red Bull Ring, Antonelli said: 'I just apologised straight away. I recognise it's all on me and I just feel sorry because I ended my race, but I ended his as well."
'I think I had a normal start, then going up to T3 I was just trying to maintain the position. I didn't want to do anything because I knew there was no space in front, but then when I hit the brake, I locked the rear, and I got caught by that.
'When I locked the rear, I lost the car, and then I had to first avoid the Racing Bull [of Lawson], but then I just couldn't stop the car. Unfortunately, I hit Max, and I just feel very sorry towards the team and him, of course.
Verstappen was seemingly accepting of Antonelli's apology.

The World Champion, reflecting on the incident, said, 'Unlucky, I guess. It is what it is. I spoke quickly to Kimi, and he came with me to the hospitality. I think every driver has made a mistake like that. No one does that on purpose as well, so for me, that's not a big deal," said Verstappen post-race.

F1: Bortoleto hopes he can fight for points for rest of Formula One season

Gabriel Bortoleto hopes he and Sauber can fight for points for the rest of the Formula One season after he scored his first in Austria at the weekend and was voted 'Driver of the Day'. The first Brazilian since Felipe Massa in 2017 to score, the rookie finally opened his account with a breakthrough eighth place in his 11th race. Teammate Nico Hulkenberg made it a double celebration by finishing ninth from the back of the grid -- the German's third race in a row in the points. Champion in Formula Two last year, 20-year-old Bortoleto was chasing his manager, Aston Martin's double world champion Fernando Alonso, all the way to the chequered flag at Spielberg on Sunday. 'It couldn't be better to get my first points fighting with him. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to overtake him, but it was very close,' he told Sky Sports television. Alonso, who made his debut with uncompetitive Minardi at the age of 19 in 2001, knew how important it was for Bortoleto. 'He has been outstanding this season and for one reason or another Hulkenberg was always scoring the points on Sunday,' said the Spaniard. 'He felt it was a little bit unfair sometimes that he cannot see his name with points already with the performance he was achieving. Happy for him that he has unlocked this situation now and he can have fun. Hopefully the first of many in the points.' 'In F3 I was dominating from the beginning but F2 I had a tough start to the season and I've been growing up a lot during the season and I managed to win,' he said. 'And in F1 I think I am doing more or less the same as in F2, growing through the season, learning a lot of things. 'Hopefully (for the rest of the season) we can be fighting for what we have been fighting for today. I feel like if the team keeps doing the job they have been doing this weekend, we can achieve big things.' Team boss Jonathan Wheatley said earlier in the week that Bortoleto was gaining in confidence all the time and the results would come. 'What can I say? An outstanding performance all weekend,' he told the driver over team radio at the end. 'First points, well-deserved, amazing race and we were in the hunt. We've got a racing car.'

Lando Norris closes in on Oscar Piastri in F1 standings, just one strong race away from overtaking McLaren teammate

Image credit: Lando Norris/Instagram McLaren is undoubtedly the fastest car this season, and its two drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, are among the fastest on the grid. The inter-team competition seems to be heating up now, with Norris closing the gap with Piastri in the Formula 1 Driver Standings, one race at a time. Piastri has won five races so far and is leading the championship, but Norris is now not far behind after registering his third win of the year on Sunday at the Austrian Grand Prix. Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri locked in their own battle for F1 World Championship Oscar Piastri has five wins under his belt and is on top of the F1 Driver Standings with 216 points. Lando Norris is now catching up fast and is just 15 points behind him, at 201 points after the race in Austria. The two were 22 points apart before arriving in Austria, and with the gap getting shorter, it wouldn't be a surprise if Norris beats Piastri in the next race — the British Grand Prix, Norris' home race. Sunday's race seemed more like an intra-team battle, with Norris and Piastri going almost wheel-to-wheel at the front. Piastri did have his chance at beating Norris, but Franco Colapinto's move in the final phase of the race forced Piastri off onto the grass, costing him some crucial seconds. Needless to say, Piastri looked visibly upset at losing his chance to register a sixth win. Commenting on their intra-team rivalry on the track, McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella said, "We trust and rely on Oscar and Lando. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It was clear to us that the guys needed to have the opportunity to win the race, as long as they did it like they did today. After the race on Sunday, he said, 'It was a tough race, pushing the whole way through — tricky and tiring. A 1-2 is exactly what we wanted, and we did it, so I'm happy. We had a great battle. It was a lot of sun — a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar. Inside the car it was tough, especially when he was in the DRS.
