Shopkeeper jailed over haul of fake cigarettes
A shopkeeper who sold illegal cigarettes and vapes in a number of stores has been jailed for three years and eight months.
Ismail Amin's shop in Boston, Lincolnshire, was raided in February 2023 and officers uncovered illicit vapes, cigarettes and tobacco worth £3,000, Lincolnshire Trading Standards said.
He also committed similar offences in stores he owned in Birmingham and across Derbyshire, in "a network of illegal trade", a spokesperson added.
Amin, of Reeves Road, Derby, was also ordered to pay costs of around £20,000 when he was sentenced during a hearing at Derby Crown Court last week.
During the raid in Boston, officers said they uncovered a large stash of products in an "electronic hide" disguised as a wall.
Andy Wright, principal trading standards officer at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "The products themselves are often dangerous.
"Cigarettes which are illegally manufactured rarely comply with fire safety standards and usually lack the self-extinguishing feature of legal ones."
He said shops selling "illegal goods contribute to anti-social behaviour and are often a front for other serious criminality such as illegal working".
"This was the case here [in Boston], as the person found in charge of the shop had no right to work in the UK."
Last month, officers said more than 90,000 illicit cigarettes and 300 vapes were seized from seven shops in Lincolnshire as part of a crackdown.
Lincolnshire Police described it as "the biggest retail haul" in the county to date, with more than 40,000 of the cigarettes found at one premise.
The goods were seized from shops in Boston, Spalding and Holbeach.

Convicted nurse faces wait for appeal ruling
A nurse jailed for murdering four elderly patients has been told he faces a wait to find out the outcome of his appeal against his convictions. Colin Campbell, previously known as Colin Norris, was found guilty in 2008 of killing four women and attempting to kill a fifth by injecting them with insulin. Doris Ludlam, 80, Bridget Bourke, 88, Irene Crookes, 79, and Ethel Hall, 86, were inpatients on orthopaedic wards where Campbell worked in Leeds in 2002 and developed unexplained hypoglycaemia. Campbell denied any wrongdoing and over the past 14 days, the Court of Appeal has heard from both his lawyers and also the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), who opposed the appeal. He unsuccessfully appealed against his conviction in 2009 and applied to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) in 2011, who said previously that the prosecution had relied on "wholly circumstantial" evidence. The CCRC referred the case to the Court of Appeal in London four years ago. The appeal hearing finished on Friday after closing statements from Michael Mansfield KC, for Campbell, and James Curtis KC, for the CPS. Mr Mansfield previously told the court that Campbell's appeal was a "straightforward case" and that the judges "must conclude that these convictions are unsafe". However, Mr Curtis said the court must uphold the convictions, adding that the jury in Campbell's trial were "provided with the necessary relevant facts and issues, from a plethora of highly qualified and clinically experienced witnesses". Lady Justice Macur, sitting with Sir Stephen Irwin and Mr Justice Picken, said after closing submissions: "It will come as no surprise that we are going to reserve judgment." She added: "There may be ancillary matters for which we will call you back. We will know once you have the draft judgment." A judgment is expected in writing at a later date. Boy, 16, killed in hit and run crash named locally
A teenage pedestrian who was killed in a hit and run crash in Sheffield has been named locally. Abdullah Yaha Al-Zaidy, 16, was struck by a grey Audi which is believed to have been driven towards three electric bikes on Staniforth Road in Darnall on Wednesday afternoon. One of the e-bike riders, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday. Residents and local councillors have now paid tribute to the boy, who "always gave the best smiles", and said his death as he walked along the pavement behind the e-bikes had shocked the community. Three people, a 45-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 46, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three remain in custody. Abdullah was described as an "innocent bystander" to the incident by South Yorkshire Police. The car did not stop at the scene. Mrs Khan, who has been living in the area for eight years, said the teenager used to work at Shansha Red Shop on Staniforth Road and serve her ice cream. "He was a good lad, reserved, not talkative but always gives good smiles," she said. "It's so sad. I couldn't sleep, especially knowing him, that upsets me really. "He was such a young boy." Darnall Labour councillor Mary Lea said: "I can speak for myself and my colleague, councillor Zahira Naz, and say we were shocked when we heard about this incident. "My first thoughts were of the family and the boy who lost his life and the tragedy of it all. "Our hearts go out to this young man's family at this time; and we can only imagine their grief and pain. We are thinking about them and they [are] in our prayers." South Yorkshire Police said the boy's family had been informed and was being supported by officers. Abdullah's name and photograph were shared by the South Yorkshire Janazah Announcements Facebook page, which provides information about Muslim funerals and burials, on Friday morning. The post read: "Abdullah, known locally as Abdul, was a beloved member of the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque. "He was reportedly walking to a nearby shop to meet his father, with plans to eat together, when the tragic accident occurred. "May Allah grant him the highest ranks of Jannah and grant his family and friends strength and patience during this unimaginable time."
