DOJ launches Title IX probe into California over state law allowing trans athletes to play women's sports
The Justice Department opened an inquiry Wednesday into whether a California state law allowing transgender student athletes to compete in women's sports violates federal Title IX rules against sex discrimination.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, the Jurupa Unified School District and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) were informed of the investigation in 'letters of legal notice' sent by the DOJ.
The CIF oversees high school sports in the state, and the Jurupa Unified School District is home to the school where a transgender track athlete recently won titles in the girls' long jump and triple jump.
3 Trump signed an executive order in February that threatened to strip federal funding from states that don't bar transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.

'The investigation is to determine whether California, its senior legal, educational, and athletic organizations, and the school district are engaging in a pattern or practice of discrimination on the basis of sex,' the DOJ said in a statement.
The probe was opened in response to a lawsuit filed by the families of two girls at a Riverside, Calif., high school, alleging that the state statute 'is harming hundreds – if not thousands – of female students by removing opportunities for female athletes to be champions in their own sports, robbing them of podium positions and awards, and creating unsafe and intimidating environments in their bathrooms and locker rooms' — and is at odds with Title IX.
One of the plaintiffs in the case – an 11th-grade female cross-country athlete – claims she was removed from her position on the Martin Luther King High School girls' varsity cross-country team to make room for a biological male athlete and, as a result, was prevented from participating in elite competitions and being recruited by colleges and universities.
The lawsuit further alleges that the Riverside Unified School District, and Martin Luther King High School's principal, assistant principal and athletic director 'violated the constitutional rights' of the 11th-grader and another plaintiff, a 9th-grader, by ordering them to remove t-shirts protesting the girl's removal from the cross-country team.
3 The investigation was launched in response to a lawsuit alleging discrimination over the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's sports.

'Title IX exists to protect women and girls in education. It is perverse to allow males to compete against girls, invade their private spaces, and take their trophies,' Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement.
'This Division will aggressively defend women's hard-fought rights to equal educational opportunities,' she added.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office and Bonta's office did not immediately respond to The Post's request for comment.

The investigation announcement comes one day after President Trump warned that he would consider stripping California of at least some federal funding if it continues to allow transgender athletes to compete in women's sports.
'California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow 'MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN'S SPORTS,'' Trump fumed on Truth Social Tuesday.
'THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to,' he added.
Back in February, Trump signed an executive order that threatened to strip federal funding from states that don't bar transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.
Hours after Trump's post, CIF announced that it would expand the number of permitted participants at the upcoming track and field championship meet in order to allow 'any biological female student-athlete' who initially failed to qualify for the event, because of the participation of transgender athletes, to compete.

Romanian man pleads guilty to leading ‘swatting' of U.S. officials
June 2 (UPI) -- A Romanian man on Monday pleaded guilty as the ringleader of a group making bomb threats and triggering "swatting" attacks against 75 U.S. public officials, including members of Congress, four religious institutions and journalists, the Justice Department said. Thomasz Szabo, 26, was extradited from Romania to the District of Columbia in November, DOJ said in a news release. Szabo and his co-conspirators reported false emergencies at government buildings, houses of worship, and private residences, including the homes of senior government officials, prosecutors said. Nemanja Radovanovic, 21, of Serbia, was charged with Szabo in August 2024 on one count of conspiracy, 29 counts of threats and false information regarding explosives, and four counts of transmitting threats in interstate and foreign commerce. Szabo, who is also known as Plank, Jonah and Cypher, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of threats involving explosives. He faces up to 15 years in prison for the two counts. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 23. "This defendant led a dangerous swatting criminal conspiracy, deliberately threatening dozens of government officials with violent hoaxes and targeting our nation's security infrastructure from behind a screen overseas," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. In late 2020, Szabo founded an online community that falsely reported threats at the addresses for the purpose of provoking a police response there, DOJ said. He was the moderator of chat groups. The false reports included a threat in December 2020 to commit a mass shooting at New York City synagogues, and one in January 2021 to detonate explosives at the U.S. Capitol and kill President-elect Joe Biden. Szabo publicized "swatting" activity to his followers and encouraged them to engage in behavior like that. From Dec. 24, 2023, to early January 2024, DOJ said members of Szabo's group committed swatting and bomb threats that included at least 25 members of U.S. Congress or family members, at least six current or former senior U.S. Executive Branch officials, at least 13 current or former senior federal law enforcement officials, multiple members of the federal judiciary and at least 27 current or former state government officials or family members of officials. Also targeted were religious institutions and remembers of the media. "I did 25+ swattings today," one subordinate bragged to Sazabi, and "creating massive havoc in America. $500,000+ in taxpayers wasted in just two days." Investigating the cases were the U.S. Secret Service Washington Field Office and Criminal Investigative Division, the FBI's Washington and Minneapolis Field Offices, and the U.S. Capitol Police. In December, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger testified before the Senate Rules and Administration Committee about the need for more officers as the number of threats against members of Congress escalates. Other agencies assisting were in Bucharest, Romania; south Florida, central Florida; Syracuse, N.Y.; western Washington State; South Dakota; southern Illinois; and northern New York. "Today, Szabo pleaded guilty to a years-long conspiracy that targeted victims with swatting and bomb threats, including to government buildings, houses of worship and homes of government officials," FBI Director Kash Patel said. "Swatting endangers lives and will not be tolerated by the FBI. We are fully committed to working with our partners." "Anyone who hijacks police resources for senseless crimes like these will have to answer for their actions," interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro in the District of Columbia said. Szabo was born in Egypt and lived in Kuwait for 17 years.

Education Department declares June ‘Title IX Month'
The Education Department announced Monday that June, typically known as Pride Month, would be honored as 'Title IX Month' as it works to undo Biden-era transgender protections. The department said the move is 'in honor of the fifty-third anniversary of Title IX of the Educational Amendments (1972) being signed into law.' 'June will now be dedicated to commemorating women and celebrating their struggle for, and achievement of, equal educational opportunity,' its press release states. The Education Department will also highlight steps it has taken to 'reverse the Biden Administration's legacy of undermining Title IX' and says it will step up measures to 'protect women in line with the true purpose of Title IX,' it added. The move comes after the Trump administration has aimed to undo protections for transgender athletes, arguing it is unfair for transgender women and girls to play on teams that match their gender identity. The Department of Education has also launched numerous investigations against K-12 districts and higher education institutions for allowing transgender individuals on women's sports teams. 'The Department is recognizing June as 'Title IX Month' to honor women's hard-earned civil rights and demonstrate the Trump Administration's unwavering commitment to restoring them to the fullest extent of the law. Title IX provides women protections on the basis of sex in all educational activities, which include their rights to equal opportunity in sports and sex-segregated intimate spaces, including sororities and living accommodations,' said Education Secretary Linda McMahon. 'This Administration will fight on every front to protect women's and girls' sports, intimate spaces, dormitories and living quarters, and fraternal and panhellenic organizations,' she added. As Pride Month begins, LGBTQ rights organization GLAAD released a report indicating it recorded more than 1,000 incidents within the past year targeting the community, with more than half of those specifically going after transgender and gender-nonconforming Americans. 'This goes along with the really intense conversations that we're having right now around trans rights,' said GLAAD analyst Sarah Moore. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
