It's been over ten years since audiences bid farewell to Shameless, Channel 4's unforgettable dramedy set in the fictitious Chatsworth estate in Manchester. Debuting in 2004, Shameless quickly established itself as a standout series of the noughties, launching several acting careers in the process.
The brainchild of Burnley-born Paul Abbott, the show offered a raw, humorous, and often shocking depiction of working-class life in Britain. Its influence extended beyond the UK, with the American version also achieving success.
Since The Jockey served its last pint, the world has undergone significant changes as have the lives of the cast who brought Chatsworth to life.
Let's catch up with the former inhabitants of Chatsworth, to find out where they are now - from gracing Hollywood red carpets to participating in reality TV face-offs....
Frank Gallagher - David Threlfall
(Image: Daily Mirror)
David played the alcoholic, chain-smoking, irresponsible father who deserted his five children to live with his neurotic, sex-obsessed girlfriend, Sheila Jackson. Often seen quoting Shakespeare amidst bouts of incontinence, Frank's signature pose was leaning against the bar at The Jockey in his iconic parka.
Off-screen, David Threlfall, who is now 71 years old, presents a stark contrast to his disorderly on-screen persona. A consummate professional, David boasts classical training and a distinguished career.
His array of roles include appearances in blockbuster films such as Patriot Games with Harrison Ford and performances in esteemed TV series like Cutting It and Spooks. He also regularly treads the boards with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where his acting talent truly comes alive.
In one of his latest ventures, David took on the role of George Parker in Funny Woman, sharing the spotlight with Gemma Arterton in this dramatisation of Nick Hornby's novel. The show tracks the tale of a beauty queen venturing from Blackpool to carve out her fame in London's television scene during the vibrant era of the sixties.
Beyond his theatrical pursuits, David is a family man, sharing two children with his wife Brana Bajic, who is also an accomplished actor. David says he has no similarities with his character from Shameless; telling the Mirror that he doesn't smoke, underscoring the disparity between himself and his fictional counterpart.
In a 2010 interview, he shed light on another distinction: "I can't imagine getting up in the morning and taking a drink. My body doesn't take more than four pints. I was doing a scene yesterday where he was drinking cough medicine. He's lost."
Fiona Gallagher - Anne-Marie Duff
(Image: CHANNEL FOUR)
Fiona, played by Anne-Marie Duff, was the tough eldest daughter of Frank in the hit series, left to care for her younger siblings after their mother Monica deserted them for a new life with her female lover. Fiona's dull existence as a part-time teaching assistant took a turn for the romantic when the dashing Steve McBride, played by James McAvoy, swept her off her feet in a nightclub.
However, the dream-like romance was short-lived; in the second season, Steve's activities as a car thief and heroin dealer were exposed, leading to his hasty departure from the neighbourhood. He later reappeared to whisk Fiona away to Amsterdam, where the couple tied the knot.
In a twist mirroring their on-screen romance, Anne-Marie, now 54, and James, 46, found love off-screen, secretly marrying in 2006 and welcoming their son Brandon four years later. Their union, however, came to an end in 2016, with Anne-Marie describing the divorce as a 'profound, difficult experience'.
James has since remarried, finding love with Lisa Liberati whom he met on the set of the psychological horror film 'Split'. Despite the end of their romantic chapter, Anne-Marie explained to The Telegraph: "There's a lot of goodwill between us. And we do still laugh all the time. I cannot imagine a time in my life when he doesn't make me belly laugh. We love being parents and he's someone I'll respect, always."
After leaving Shameless in its second season, Anne-Marie's career took off. She bagged roles in noteworthy films like Nowhere Boy, Suffragette, and Before I Go to Sleep sharing the screen with Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth.
More recently, Anne-Marie has shone on the small screen, with her performances in acclaimed series such as Sex Education, The Salisbury Poisonings, and Bad Sisters. Her work in Bad Sisters landed her a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in 2023.
Steve McBride - James McAvoy
(Image: PA)
Steve McBride, portrayed by James McAvoy, sprang from a family deeply rooted in the medical field, only to abandon his medical studies two years into the course. Leaving Shameless with Fiona in the second series, James witnessed his career take off, securing leading parts in major films, including Atonement, X-Men, and The Last King of Scotland.
After separating from Anne-Marie, the Scottish star began a new chapter with production assistant Lisa, leading to an intimate wedding, which he confirmed during a 2022 interview with The Guardian. Recently, James was honoured for his extraordinary contribution to film in his hometown.
In March 2025, he was bestowed with the Cinema City Honorary Award at the Glasgow Film Festival (GFF). Expressing his feelings outside the Glasgow Film Theatre, James stated: "It's humbling, it's a massive honour. I never thought for a second when I started acting at the age of 16 that I would even get another job, let alone be here, 29 years later, getting a lovely award from my home city. So yeah, massively humbling, and it's quite sentimental as well."
Debbie Gallagher - Rebecca Ryan
(Image: Publicity photo)
Debbie Gallagher, played by Rebecca Ryan, was described by Frank as a gift from God, but one who you needed to watch your change around. Much like her older sister Fiona, Debbie found herself burdened with maternal responsibilities before she left the estate to join the army in the sixth series.
Rebecca, now 33, went on to feature in the BBC drama Doctors and later took on the role of Gem Dean in Casualty, although she left the show in 2018.
In 2021, the Manchester-born actress joined the cast of Coronation Street, playing the role of Underworld PA Lydia Chambers. After stirring up a fair amount of trouble between Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) and Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson), including pushing Adam off a balcony, Lydia exited the soap in 2022.
In January 2025, Rebecca announced that she is expecting her second child with husband Dan Acraman via a heartfelt Instagram post. This joyous news comes almost two years after the birth of their first child.
Phillip 'Lip' Gallagher - Jody Latham
(Image: Channel 4)
Phillip 'Lip' Gallagher was played by Jody Latham. Rarely referred to by his real name due to being 'a bit of a gobsh*te', Lip fathered a child with Mandy McGuire before heading off to university to explore his academic side.
After bidding farewell to Shameless, Jody, now 42, joined his co-star Rebecca Ryan in Waterloo Road before moving on to The Tudors, Hollyoaks, Holby City, and Doctors. In 2009, he became the first contestant to be booted off the reality show Hell's Kitchen following a string of disputes with other participants.
Jody has had a career change from his acting days to the construction industry, joining the family business. It appears this career move has paid off handsomely, as Jody proudly displayed his eye-catching lime green £200K Lamborghini on his Instagram.
The former actor spoke candidly about his mental health journey in 2020 during an episode of James English's Anything Goes podcast. He revealed: "I did a stint in rehab - I've never spoken about this publicly. It wasn't for me - but I learned a lot from it."
Delving deeper into his personal battles, he admitted: "My substance abuse is minimal, I do drink sometimes, not every day and not a lot, but because I was going through anxiety and business worries, there was an opportunity to go and refresh."
The experience also involved dealing with burnout: "It was exhaustion as well. I took a week out, it was going to be a month, but I took a week."
Ian Gallagher - Gerard Kearns
(Image: Channel 4)
Ian's storyline in the show painted him as a troubled character harbouring secrets, notably his affair with Kash Karib (Chris Bisson), both his employer and a married corner shop owner.
Plot twists revealed that Ian was not in fact Frank's son but a product of Monica's infidelity. His time on the show came to an abrupt end after he unwittingly caused Joe Pritchard's death in series seven.
Offscreen, Gerard Kearns, now aged 39, has continued to shine in his acting career with roles in critically acclaimed productions like The Mark of Cain and Trespass Against Us, which also stars Michael Fassbender.
Gerard's personal life is just as fulfilling, having tied the knot with his other half, Sarah, in December 2017. The couple have two sons, Aiden and James.
Veronica Fisher - Maxine Peake
(Image: Unknown)
Veronica, played by Maxine Peake, was a staple in the Gallaghers' household on the popular show—frequently seen engaging in passionate antics with her partner Kev. However, their storyline took a serious turn when the couple faced fertility challenges.
This plot sadly mirrored the real-life struggles of actress Maxine Peake, now 50, and her partner Pawlo Wintoniuk, as they endured the heartache of failed IVF attempts and miscarriages.
"I had three rounds but that was enough for me, I was done. It was so difficult physically and emotionally," she shared with Radio 4 listeners. "You are absolutely pumped full of hormones, you're tired, and I was working at the same time."
She highlighted the relentless nature of the treatment, revealing: "You don't have that luxury of taking time off. You have to find places where you can inject when you're on a night shoot. In a grubby portable toilet, panicking that you're going to infect yourself."
Maxine Peake has since taken on roles depicting Myra Hindley in See No Evil: The Moors Murders, appearing in hits like The Theory of Everything, Dinnerladies, and Black Mirror.
Kev Ball - Dean Lennox Kelly
(Image: Unknown)
Barman Kev and his randy wife Veronica were famed for their steamy scenes, but for actor Dean, lying naked and spread-eagled on leopardskin sheets was a low point.
He spoke to The Argus about the moment: "That was definitely the most embarrassing moment. It was a very cold day and there were five people in the room, all of them men."
Dean, now 49, has opened up about an awkward moment on set during the early days of his career. Reflecting on a particularly challenging scene, he said: "There was another bad episode at the start of the second series when Kev had a crush on his reading teacher and I had to pretend to masturbate a few times on camera."
The actor described the discomfort he felt while filming, especially under the guidance of a female director. He recalled: "That was really embarrassing because it was a female director and she was kind of giving me notes about what my position should be like. Trust me, lady, I'm doing it right."
Since those days, Dean has enjoyed a successful acting career, featuring in shows such as Frankie, Jamestown, and Married, Single, Other. Some may also recall his portrayal of William Shakespeare in a 2007 episode of Doctor Who.
Dean's more recent projects include roles in Brassic and Shadow and Bone. and he shares two children with his wife Eugenie, a folk singer and writer.
Sheila Jackson - Maggie O'Neill
(Image: Campbell Mark)
Maggie O'Neill, who played Sheila Jackson, brought to life Frank's girlfriend, a character with a complex past involving domestic abuse and peculiar habits. Despite her agoraphobia and anxiety, Sheila remained inexplicably loyal to her beer-loving partner.
Before her role on the show, Maggie O'Neill, now 62, had already made a name for herself with appearances in the Hollywood film Gorillas in the Mist and the music video for Simply Red's Holding Back the Years.
Her post-show career included a stint as Suzy Branning, the sister of Max and Jack, on EastEnders in 2008. She left after six months amid unconfirmed rumours of a dispute with co-star Samantha Womack.
In recent years, Maggie has appeared in Call The Midwife, Casualty, and Two Doors Down.
Karen Jackson - Rebecca Atkinson
(Image: Channel 4)
Karen, Sheila's wayward daughter on the hit show Shameless, caused a stir when she notoriously carried out a risqué act with Lip and Ian Gallagher beneath the kitchen table before diving into a taboo romance with Frank Gallagher.
After a tumultuous period, Karen found stability and took charge of The Jockey pub along with her new husband Jamie Maguire. Her personal life mirrored her character's calmer period as she fell for Ben Batt, her co-star who played Joe Pritchard, and together they celebrated the arrival of their child in 2016.
The actress, Rebecca Atkinson, now 41 years old, has appeared on the small screen in an array of television series including Life on Mars, Holby City, Coronation Street, and Doctors. Despite her diverse roles, it's the character of Karen that remains dearest to Rebecca.
Discussing her journey with the Sunday Post, she shared: "It was such a huge part of my life, I grew up on that show. I was there for part of my teens and all through my 20s," adding, "It's definitely part of what's made me what I am. There's a part of Karen in me. It was an amazing time in my life and I met Ben on the show too so I wouldn't have my little boy either if it wasn't for Shameless."

The secrets to looking as good as Liz Hurley at 60

'Mummy, actress, model, farmer, bikini designer': that's how Elizabeth Hurley describes herself on her Instagram bio, and who are we to contradict? Though if we may, we'd also like to add 'national institution who has been enlivening the news cycle since 1994, when she stole every front page in That black safety-pin Versace dress'. 'National institution' is not, one fears, a phrase that would find favour with the perennially youthful and ebullient Liz. It makes her sound venerable, yes, but also rather staid, something that Hurley is decidedly not. Everyone celebrates their 60th birthday in different ways, and Hurley seems to have chosen to mark hers by ageing backwards, though not in a Kris Jenner way. Yes, she's genetically blessed to be a quintessential English rose, but more compelling than her looks is her lust for life, and her enthusiasm for living it fully. Whether she's sauntering along a tropical beach in her self-designed bikini, fronting a new reality TV show (Channel 4's The Deceased), larking around with her lookalike son, Damian, or hard launching her new relationship with Billy Ray Cyrus, Hurley's joie de vivre is infectious. Here's how to be more Liz, whatever your age or relationship status. Don't be afraid of bold style choices If anyone subscribes to the notion that you can wear anything at 60, it's Hurley, whose glamorous, high-octane style has only amplified with age. If it's figure-hugging, bright and shows off her famous décolletage, she's on board. Her go-to designers are Versace, Valentino and Tom Ford-era Gucci, but when it comes to swimwear, she always wears Elizabeth Hurley Beach, the swimwear brand she launched in 2005. 'Elizabeth has a perfect eye for fashion,' says Mike Adler, who's been her stylist for red carpet events, tours and special projects since 2018. 'Her signature style always remains glamorous with ultra clean lines. A formal look centres around a brilliant cut, a bold, bright colour and a favourable neckline or deep plunge. She's always incredibly supportive of designers and their craft, and appreciative of being able to present with total confidence in the public eye. 'She's also sustainably aware, re-wearing iconic pieces from her own wardrobe. During our recent Oscars fitting, Elizabeth pulled out an incredible archive Versace gown, as appealing today as when she first wore it. Not only did the dress still fit like a glove – but in comparing the red carpet photo from 30 years ago, she looked even better now.' Avoid a high-UPF diet In January 2024, she detailed in an Instagram post how she avoids junk food, which she defined as 'anything that contains any ingredient that I don't have in my own kitchen'. Adding: 'My tastes are pretty simple – I don't drink weird green juices or anything like that. My mantra is: don't eat too much, too fast, too often or too late. Or, put another way, eat smaller meals, chew properly, ban snacking, and eat dinner earlier. This works for me.' She also ensures that fruit and vegetables take up half her plate with every meal. Crucially, she isn't abstemious, making a loaf of bread every day, and cakes on weekends. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elizabeth Hurley (@elizabethhurley1) Get into the garden Ever the pragmatist, Hurley prefers walking in nature to sweating it out in a spin class. 'I don't go to the gym, but I do a lot of gardening...' she told The Telegraph last year. 'I don't really sit still very much.' Perhaps this is where we're going wrong. Forget cutting out carbs after 7pm: we simply need to rake more leaves and weed more. A fan of 'found fitness', she likes to incorporate exercise into her everyday routine, doing squats while she brushes her teeth to tone her legs, then walking her dogs for 20 minutes to get her blood pumping. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elizabeth Hurley (@elizabethhurley1) Tweak the shade of your hair Like many women approaching 60 (or even 40), Hurley has lightened the dark brown tresses of her youth into a rich caramel bronde whose shade has largely remained consistent for decades. Warm, flattering and sun-kissed, it's coloured using a 'ring lighting' technique that frames the face with highlights, acting like a low-maintenance soft filter. How to get the look? 'Keeping those greys away can be a real chore, but adding a few very fine micro lights near the root and broader beach lights near the face, plus choosing a base colour that is natural and a shade or two lighter than one's own original colour is key to a flattering effect,' says the celebrity colourist Josh Wood. 'Adding gloss and shine is also important, as the texture of grey can be very wiry, so keeping the hair looking hydrated is paramount.' For those not in possession of Hurley's thick hair, help is but a hair extension away. Hadley Yates salon in London specialises in a full yet natural look. 'For a DIY solution I'd recommend the Curated Hair Extensions full-head clip-in, which come in 16in and 20in lengths and add instant volume,' Yates suggests. 'For maximum shine, Redken's Acidic Colour Gloss, £33, is an at-home treatment which locks in glass-like shine by sealing your cuticles and restoring the hair back to its healthiest PH.' Moisturiser, moisturiser, moisturiser 'The one thing I swear by is moisturiser – and lots of it,' she told Woman & Home magazine. 'I'll moisturise my face about six times a day and my neck about 10 times a day.' Her favourites include La Mer, £135, and Estée Lauder's Advance Night Repair serum, £55, which she's been using religiously ever since becoming an Estée Lauder spokesperson in the mid-Nineties. For her body, she favours Clinique's Deep Comfort moisturiser (£39). While she's open about her skincare routine, she's not on the record as having had any extra help. 'Facially, Liz appears refreshed and natural,' notes Dr Manav Bawa, a cosmetic doctor and medical director at Time Clinic on behalf of Allergan Aesthetics. 'Subtle signs might suggest she's had light Botox treatments, dermal fillers like Juvederm to restore facial volume, and possibly skin boosters or injectable hydrators to hydrate and tighten the skin.' He suggests that those looking to replicate Hurley's glow at home should focus on products featuring vitamin C and retinol. Treatment-wise, they could also try biostimulation and regenerative treatments such as HarmonyCa to enhance the skin's own healing and renewal processes. 'These approaches can help maintain a rejuvenated, naturally fresh appearance without the risk of looking 'done'.' Body-wise, Hurley's even-toned skin could be achieved with the help of medical-grade microneedling with radiofrequency or laser skin tightening, which can stimulate collagen production and improve elasticity. 'Regular exfoliation and the use of active body skincare, such as glycolic acid lotions, also help maintain a youthful, luminous skin tone at home, although the most powerful product in Liz's skincare arsenal is likely a high-quality broad-spectrum SPF,' says Bawa. Make the effort with your make-up 'Actors and models must spend the equivalent of years in the make-up chair,' Hurley posted on Instagram. Unlike many women in the public eye, she's honest about the time it takes to reach Peak Liz, acknowledging that there's no quick fix. 'I work for a cosmetic company, I work for fashion companies, I have my own fashion company, I'm in high definition on massive cinema screens,' she once said. 'So it's my business to make more effort ... of course I do, it's my bread and butter.' Hurley's not averse to wearing a full face of make-up, and really carries it off. Her trademark look – a smoky eye composed of black kohl liner, shimmering grey eyeshadow, soft pink blush and shiny pale pink lip gloss – is part Hollywood siren, part Brit on a big night out. A close friend of Trinny Woodall for over 30 years (she calls her 'Trinster'), it's likely she uses Trinny London's Eye2Eye cream-based colour in Chalice (£20), and her Line2Define smudge-proof eyeliner in Shahrose (£24). Hurley also has the distinction of having a lipstick named after her and formulated in her honour: Estée Lauder's Elizabeth Hurley Pink 391 Rouge Cristal. It's sadly discontinued, though if you have $98 (£72) to spare, there's one currently for sale on eBay. Liz Hurley's 10 most memorable style moments By Jessica Burrell

Noel Edmonds devastated over horror disease as he makes TV comeback

After leaving the UK, Noel Edmonds has delved into his passion for farming. But despite his experience on his own farm, he's haunted by the foot and mouth disease outbreak in 2001. Noel Edmonds was personally affected by the deadly outbreak of foot and mouth disease back in 2001. He's been the face of Channel 4 's Deal Or No Deal, a fixture on Top Of The Pops and one of the most recognisable names in British television. Now, at the age of 76, Noel Edmonds is embarking on a new adventure – and he's filmed it all for ITV. ‌ The presenter first settled in Auckland, New Zealand 's busiest city, but it wasn't quite the serene escape he had hoped for. Craving stillness, he and his wife Liz eventually bought land in Ngatimoti, at the top of South Island. 'The Tasman region is stunning,' Noel says. 'Nelson is our nearest city, though it feels more like a large town. We're very happy here.' ‌ Essex-born Noel's love of the land stems from childhood and his memories of summers spent in Carlisle with his Aunt Muriel. His enthusiasm later developed into a passion for ethical farming. 'When my career took off and I could afford a nice house, I bought one with 10 acres. I later bought more land, and by the late 70s or early 80s, I'd started farming,' he says. After the devastation of the 2001 foot and mouth disease outbreak in Devon, which paralysed the farming industry, Noel became an advocate for animal welfare. 'It means treating livestock with respect,' Noel says. "One of the core principles of ethical farming is respect for livestock. My passion and determination partly comes from my experience in Devon in 2001, during the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. That year taught me a lot - especially relevant to recent years with flu outbreaks and government responses to major health issues." Luxury hotel offering Elemis spa treatment with a free £101 beauty gift In Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure, Noel lifts the lid on his life down under in New Zealand. Noel and his wife Liz made the move in 2019, and it was as instinctive as it was life-changing. ‌ 'Our first holiday was to New Zealand, and it was a fantastic trip,' he remembers. 'We stayed in a couple of luxury lodges, but also in B&Bs and farm stays. We began to understand the Kiwi way of life. We returned to the UK thinking this could be our future.' Things rapidly unfolded. The end of Deal Or No Deal – after an extraordinary 3,000 episodes – marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for Noel. Looking back, he says, 'It was a punishing schedule but a fabulous period of my life. Without Deal, I wouldn't have met Liz.' Noel and Liz have also launched a hospitality business with a vineyard, pub, restaurant and a supermarket. But for his new show, the focus shifts towards something even more ambitious. ‌ The couple want to create New Zealand's first energy garden – a pioneering project that blends biodiversity, community and sustainability into one regenerative living space. In the series, Noel will tackle hands-on challenges, meet inspirational locals and try to navigate day-to-day life in some seriously wild weather. 'The weather here has an attitude,' Noel says. 'Oh, and earthquakes. We've had three.' But he's made friends for life. 'We've been lucky. We've met some incredible people and they've welcomed us. They're glad we came. We're grateful to be here.'

Blake Lively speaks out on Justin Baldoni's £294m defamation lawsuit dismissal

Blake Lively initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni - who has strongly refuted the claims - after the pair worked together on It Ends With Us Blake Lively has spoken out for the first time since she was cleared in the $400million (£294million) defamation and extortion lawsuit filed by her It Ends with Us collaborator Justin Baldoni. The actress' powerful statement comes just hours after a judge dismissed Justin's case. Blake, 37, said on Instagram: "Last week, I stood proudly alongside 19 organisations united in defending women's rights to speak up for their safety. ‌ "Like so many others, I've felt the pain of a retaliatory lawsuit, including the manufactured shame that tries to break us. While the suit against me was defeated, so many don't have the resources to fight back." ‌ Blake initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin - who has strongly refuted the claims. However, he hit back with the $400million defamation claim against her, her publicist and husband Ryan Reynolds, all of whom have dismissed the accusations. But after the judge chucked out Justin's claims, a source close to the Los Angeles-born actress said: "Today's opinion is a total victory and a complete vindication for Blake Lively, along with those that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties dragged into their retaliatory lawsuit." The row happened after Blake and Justin, 41, starred together in It Ends With Us, a romcom released last year. The alleged sexual harassment occurred during production for that film, which Justin directed. But now, speaking after the dismissal, Blake added she was "more resolved than ever to continue to stand for every woman's right to have a voice in protecting themselves, including their safety, their integrity, their dignity and their story". The Gossip Girl actress, who has four children with Ryan Reynolds, "With love and gratitude for the many who stood by me, many of you I know. Many of you I don't. But I will never stop appreciating or advocating for you." Last month, Blake's pal Taylor Swift was dragged into the scandal when she was officially subpoenaed to appear as a witness. The pop star was delivered a legal notice by Justin's lawyer Bryan Freedman - a decision which had been slammed by her team as a tactic to create clickbait. In a move that appeared to please Blake and Taylor, it was confirmed Justin would no longer be calling on the Bad Blood hitmaker to appear as a witness. Bryan Freedman had claimed Blake had called on "her high-profile friends" including Taylor to "manipulate Justin at every turn." Taylor, who is close friends with Blake, licensed her hit song My Tears Ricochet to be used in the film but was not involved in the making of It Ends With Us, said her reps. Justin has denied all allegations brought about by Blake.
