German court convicts ex-Volkswagen managers of fraud in emissions scandal
The former head of diesel development was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, and the head of drive train electronics to two years and seven months by the court in Braunschweig, German news agency dpa reported.
Two others received suspended sentences of 15 months and 10 months.
The scandal began in September 2015 when the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a notice of violation. saying that the company had rigged engine control software that let the cars pass emissions tests while they emitted far more pollution in actual driving.
The company has paid more than 29 billion euros (£24.3 billion) in fines and compensation to vehicle owners.
Two VW managers received prison sentences in the US.
The former head of the company's Audi division, Rupert Stadler, was given a suspended sentence of 21 months and a fine of 1.1 million euros (£920,000). The sentence is still subject to appeal.
Missing from the trial, which lasted almost four years, was former chief executive Martin Winterkorn.
Proceedings against him have been suspended because of health issues, and it is not clear when he might go on trial. Winterkorn has denied wrongdoing.
Further proceedings are open against 31 other people in Germany.

Earlier today, investigators indicated that they were expected to end their search on Thursday if nothing was found. The operation kicked off on Tuesday, June 3, with teams scouring through more than 20 plots of land east of Praia da Luz. This included spots between the Ocean Club holiday resort where Madeleine vanished and the cottage where German authorities' prime suspect Christian Breuckner lived. Search teams discovered animal bones and pieces of adult clothing at these sites, according to Portuguese TV reports. The huge operation saw more than 60 officers involved in the latest search. Police were pictured using a JCB digger and cutting-edge ground-penetrating radar scanners.

Despite initial suggestions samples collected during the search would be sent to Germany for analysis, Portuguese sources this afternoon confirmed that would not happen. Animal bones and adult clothing were unearthed, but no traces linked to Madeleine McCann, so there is no cause for further inspection. A Portuguese police officer told The Sun: 'We have found nothing. There is nothing worth being sent to Germany for testing. We are finishing today." A group of 30 officers was seen searching scrubland on foot before dismantling the cordon tape around 4pm. Attention now turns to prime suspect Brueckner's impending release from jail, when he is expected to flee from Germany and slip away for good. Prosecutors have until September to rustle up an extension to his sentence to guarantee the opportunity to bring him to justice in the event of conclusive evidence. At least five abandoned stone farmhouses and barns were scoured in the area, where Brueckner is known to have lived in a 'wild camp'. Particular attention was paid to a farmhouse where 2007 satellite images showed what appeared to be a white tent. A trench was dug out with an excavator and officers returned today to conduct a close fingertip search. This week's search - the first since May 2023 - deployed special radar technology which can scan the ground and detect buried objects. Plans to scour the whole area were scrapped yesterday - and cops focused all their efforts on at least five abandoned buildings. The Sun revealed that this search was ordered after key figures in the case were flown back to Germany to again give statements on the claims Brueckner kidnapped and killed the toddler in 2007. He has never been formally charged over Madeleine's disappearance and denies any involvement - but German cops are convinced he is guilty. The Sun revealed in a documentary last month that German police uncovered a cache of disturbing evidence revealing Brueckner's obsession with young kids. There was also a hard-drive of pictures, which German investigators continue to keep secret, that is believed to indicate why they are sure Madeleine is dead. After a similar search of the nearby Arade Dam two years ago, soil and other samples were sent to Germany for checks but found to have no evidential value. Ryanair: Multiple people injured on 'dangerous flight' after plane hits 'supercell' Early this morning, our World News team shared reports of a Ryanair pilot being forced into an emergency landing due to dangerous weather. Nine people - including a two-year-old child and a crew member - were injured last night after a Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing. The plane flew into a severe thunderstorm leaving passengers terrified. The pilot announced he was aborting the flight and immediately landing at the nearest airport. One passenger described the scenes as 'chaotic and dangerous'. The Ryanair jet had 185 people on board when it was hit by extreme turbulence over southern Germany. It was flying from the German capital Berlin to the Italian city Milan when the pilot made emergency landing at Memmingen Airport in Bavaria. A spokesman for the German authorities said that nine people were injured, including one crew member and a two-year-old child. Our World News team has been following the case of missing Brit Jordan Johnson-Doyle since the end of last month, and today reported that his body had been found in a lift shaft in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, vanished on May 27 after he was last seen at a bar in a suburb of the country's capital. His disappearance sparked a massive search in a bid to find him but, tragically, he has now been found dead in a lift shaft at the ground floor of a construction site. A post-mortem found the cause of death was a "chest injury sustained from a fall from height," according to police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa. He added: "No criminal elements were found at the scene and the case has been classified as a sudden death report." Free school meal change as thousands to save up to £500 - check what it means for your area Our Politics team, who have long been championing free school meals for children, have reported that more than half a million children will become eligible for free school meals from next year after an expansion of eligibility rules. Keir Starmer has unveiled plans to extend the lifeline benefit to all kids in families who get Universal Credit (UC) in England, in a move that could save parents up to £500 a year. Currently, all children in England can get free school meals until the end of Year 2 but after that they only qualify if their family earns less than £7,400 a year after benefits. In a huge expansion, from September 2026, all children in UC households will be able to get a free lunch. A large proportion of kids on UC already receive free school meals as their household's income falls below the £7,400 threshold point. But some 500,000 more kids will now be eligible, according to the Government's estimates.
