Dawn Staley Reveals Helpful Advice For Eagles' Jalen Hurts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
Jalen Hurts has a friend in South Carolina Women's Basketball coach, Dawn Staley.
The Philadelphia-born coach, who has made her support of the Philadelphia Eagles well known, recently revealed that she frequently sends messages to Hurts, offering some inspiration.
As a quarterback in one of the toughest NFL markets, Staley feels that Hurts could use the frequent inspiration, even though he was considered one of the "coolest cats."
"I know sometimes when you play for a team that's in Philly, and you're the quarterback, and you're the star, it really is a lonely place," said Staley.
"He's QB1, we lose, the city goes crazy. So, I know it's a lonely place. Sometimes I text him, 'Hey, don't get too high with the highs or low.' He doesn't... He doesn't now. He's the coolest cat that I know, but sometimes you need to hear that you're the only one who is going to feel the pressure of everybody else, because other people in other positions can just kind of go under the radar, so to speak. When it's the quarterback, and we know you've got the potential to take us to Super Bowls and win Super Bowls, you really feel the pressure."

Although he quickly earned the support of the city after taking over as the starter during his rookie effort, beating out the struggling Carson Wentz, a sophomore slump created a negative narrative about Hurts as a franchise quarterback.

Even after Hurts put together an MVP campaign in year three and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl, the franchise quarterback remains one of the most polarizing players at the position.
Staley was happy to see Hurts overcome the narratives in 2024, putting together a second Super Bowl run and coming out on top. The pressure was on Hurts to deliver more often than not, and he ended the season by earning Super Bowl MVP honors after the Eagles took down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Staley's advice likely went a long way for Hurts throughout his Philadelphia journey. Since the quarterback still faces a ton of question marks with all he's accomplished, Staley will have to continue reaching out to the two-time Pro Bowler to keep him sharp in the City of Brotherly Love.

WNBA Champion Dealt Disappointing News on Saturday
WNBA Champion Dealt Disappointing News on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On the heels of one of the most dominant starts in franchise history, the New York Liberty received sobering news on Saturday. Advertisement All-Star center Jonquel Jones will miss approximately four to six weeks after re-spraining her right ankle in Thursday's loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Jones's extended absence comes at a pivotal juncture for a Liberty squad that burst out of the gate with a historic undefeated 9-0 record through May and early June but has begun to show cracks in recent weeks. New York saw its first loss of the season a week ago against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, and then just days ago, against the Mercury. With the WNBA All-Star game exactly four weeks away, the Liberty won't see Jones in the lineup for at least the next nine games, with the potential to miss all of July games. A native of Freeport, The Bahamas, Jones is a five-time All-Star, three-time rebounding leader and was named WNBA MVP in 2021 after averaging 19.4 points and a league-leading 11.2 rebounds per game. Advertisement Last season, she played a driving force role in New York's first-ever WNBA title, earning Finals MVP honors by scoring 17 points in Game 5. Beyond her league accolades, Jones has a decorated overseas resume, capturing championships and individual honors in Korea, Russia, and China during WNBA off-seasons. After re-injuring the same ankle midway through the second quarter against Phoenix, she exited in a walking boot and underwent imaging that revealed no structural damage. With Jones sidelined for the next month and a half, the Liberty face a steep challenge to maintain their Eastern Conference leadership through the All-Star break. Michael Vick and HBCU counterpart come full circle
While Michael Vick was getting selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft, HBCU football star Tory Woodbury had to take a different route to the league. Woodbury went undrafted out of Division II HBCU Winston-Salem State, but still managed to earn a spot in the NFL. He starred as a quarterback at WSSU but carved out a pro career as a special teams ace with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints. Nearly 25 years later, Woodbury has reunited with Vick on the inaugural Norfolk State coaching staff. He now serves as the Spartans' special teams coordinator. The two recently shared a moment of reflection in a video posted by Woodbury. At Winston-Salem State, Woodbury made a name for himself by leading the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles in 1999 and 2000. He set several passing records during his career and entered the 2001 NFL Draft as the second-fastest quarterback behind Vick. After his playing days ended, Woodbury began coaching. He started at Delaware State as a running backs coach and later spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Johnson C. Smith. Woodbury then joined the NFL again as a scout with the Los Angeles Rams. He returned to the sidelines as an assistant special teams coach and helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI. He transitioned back to college football in 2022 at Morgan State, then moved on to Howard University. At Howard, Woodbury led a special teams unit that blocked six field goals, ranking fifth nationally in the FCS. His journey from HBCU standout to Super Bowl champion and now Norfolk State assistant coach Michael Vick reflects a full-circle moment in HBCU football history.
