Ram's Powertrain Warranty Is Rising to 10 Years or 100,000 Miles
Ram is increasing its powertrain warranty for most 2026 models, with coverage set to rise to 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Along with the heavy-duty trucks and ProMaster vans sold in the United States, the improved warranty covers the gas-fed 2026 Ram 1500 lineup too.
Currently, Ram's powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles for gas-only models and five years or 100,000 miles for diesel models.
Ram fans are getting a lot of good news lately. Earlier this month, the truck brand revealed that it's bringing back the popular Hemi V-8. Now, Ram has announced that it plans to increase the length of its limited powertrain warranty for most of its 2026 models.
By offering 10 years or 100,000 miles, Ram will have the longest powertrain warranty among full-size trucks. Currently, its coverage is limited to five years or 60,000 miles for gas-fed models, which aligns with Ford and GM rivals. Like most heavy-duty trucks, Ram's diesel powertrain warranty lasts until 100K miles, but it's capped at five years.

Along with the half-ton and HD trucks, Ram says the models that will receive the improved warranty protection include the chassis-cab 3500, 4500, and 5500, as well as the ProMaster vans. While the off-road-ready Ram RHO and heavy-duty Power Wagon are eligible for the higher warranty limits, all-electric models such as the Ram ProMaster EV are excluded.
Ram's new limited powertrain warranty covers the axles, driveshafts, engine, transmission, and transfer case. It's also eligible for new vehicles that are purchased or leased, but fleet purchases don't get the same protection.

NFC is getting a range boost
The next version of the Near Field Communication (NFC) standard aims to make it easier to make payments, pair devices, and unlock doors using your phone or smartwatch. The most notable improvement is a boost to the distance of contactless connections from 0.5cm to 2cm, extending the range by x4. The NFC Release 15 standard update means NFC chips shouldn't need to be as precisely aligned with terminals to register a connection, which is especially beneficial for users who have to fumble with smaller devices like smart watches or rings. Tap-to-pay systems like Apple Pay will also start sooner, making contactless payments faster and more reliable. While some devices already register contactless connections at greater distances than 5mm, the NFC Forum behind the standard says the spec update is 'redefining the baseline.' The NFC Release 15 is needed to support contactless applications that 'demand higher reliability and a broader operating range,' according to the NFC Forum. That includes NFC tech being integrated into increasingly smaller devices and performing more complex activities with a single tap, such as using a wallet app to pay for products, receive digital receipts, and collect store loyalty points. The NFC Release 15 is currently available to high level NFC Forum member companies, including Apple, Google, Sony, and Huawei, allowing them to start implementing the improvements in their own products. Compliance certification will be made available to the public sometime this fall. The Verge has asked the NFC Forum if existing NFC devices can be updated to support the new release standard when it rolls out but didn't hear back before publication.

Social Security won't be able to pay full benefits in 2034 if Congress doesn't act
Social Security will not be able to fully pay monthly benefits to tens of millions of retirees and people with disabilities in 2034 if lawmakers don't act to address the program's pending shortfall, according to an annual report released Wednesday by Social Security's trustees. The combined Social Security trust funds – which help support payments to the elderly, survivors and people with disabilities – are expected to be exhausted in 2034, one year earlier than previously forecast, according to the trustees' annual report. At that time, payroll tax revenue and other income sources will only be able to cover 81% of benefits owed. The deterioration in the forecast stems from several factors, including a law passed by Congress last year that increased benefits for certain workers and the trustees' assumption that it will take longer for the nation's fertility rate to recover from historically low levels. Average earnings are expected to grow somewhat more slowly over the coming decade, according to the report. Medicare's fiscal outlook also worsened. Its hospital insurance trust fund, known as Medicare Part A, is expected to be able to cover scheduled inpatient hospital benefits until 2033, compared to 2036 in last year's report from the program's trustees. At that time, Medicare will only be able to pay 89% of total scheduled Part A benefits, which also cover hospice care, short-term skilled nursing facility services and home health services following hospitalizations. The program's trustees project that Medicare's trust fund will be drained sooner because of increased medical spending in 2024, which also raised the forecast for future expenditures. Plus, the trustees raised their assumed growth level of inpatient and hospice services in coming years.
