Channel Islanders lack trust in politics, survey finds
There is a widespread lack of trust and representation in local politics, a pan-island survey has found.The survey by Island Global Research, focused on understanding people's attitudes on "topical issues", also asked islanders the extent to which they trusted different institutions.A total of 1,140 residents aged over 16 in Guernsey participated and 601 took part in Jersey.More than 70% of respondents in Guernsey and 68% in Jersey believed their island was "heading in the wrong direction" and they had no or limited influence on decisions being made.
Cost of living
Across both island less than 20% said they felt elected officials represented their views well while 46% of respondents in Jersey and 58% in Guernsey said they would definitely vote in their next election.People in Jersey said their top concerns were healthcare and inflation, with inflation being more important to younger residents and healthcare to older ones.Top priorities for improvement included the cost of living, hospital waiting lists and housing.Guernsey residents said they were mainly concerned about housing, with 80% saying it was important, as well as the economy.Top priorities for improvement were affordable housing, the cost of living and infrastructure.More than 70% of islanders rated their quality of life as being 6 or higher out of 10 and most believed their lives were better in the islands than in the UK.

Zia Yusuf: Chairman of Reform UK resigns
The chairman of Reform UK, Zia Yusuf, has resigned. In a statement, Mr Yusuf said in a post on X that working to get the party elected is no longer "a good use of my time". He said: "11 months ago I became chairman of Reform. I've worked full time as a volunteer to take the party from 14 to 30%, quadrupled its membership and delivered historic electoral results. "I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office." It comes after a row in which he described a question to Sir Keir Starmer about a ban on burkas from his party's newest MP Sarah Pochin as "dumb". Rupert Lowe, a former Reform MP, was strongly critical of Mr Yusuf in the wake of the politician's suspension following allegations that he had threatened violence towards the party chair. Family shocked at rental costs in Guernsey
A man who left Guernsey said he was shocked to find the cost of rental accommodation had doubled when he returned 10 months Pinsard and his family moved to Australia in 2022 but after his wife was hurt in a car accident they decided to come back in June they had arranged a rental house for their first day back, Mr Pinsard said the property was in such poor condition they could not live in it - but they could not then find an affordable alternative.A report recently published by the Guernsey Community Foundation found young families were being "driven away" by rising living costs. Mr Pinsard said when the family had left Guernsey in 2022 they had been paying £1,300 per month for a two-bedroom house near the beach on the west said that in September 2023 they rented a "cramped" two-bedroom in St Sampsons that cost £2,600 per Pinsard added that he had found it "shocking that in such a short period of time, nine to 10 months, rental cost actually doubled".The government's Property Prices Bulletin showed the average local market rental price was £2,068 a month in the first quarter of figure is 1.5% higher than the previous quarter, 8.2% higher than the first quarter of 2024 and 51.7% higher than five years ago. 'Lots of sacrifices' Mr Pinsard said the family had been forced to live in temporary accommodation which had drained their savings."We got to the point where it was either we have to buy to get on to the property market or leave the island again," he Pinsards managed to buy a house, which needed renovation, thanks to "lots of sacrifices".Mr Pinsard said his wife worked extra shifts at the hospital and he had a side business he ran at the weekends to ensure they had a home."It is possible but only through many, many extra hours which takes time away from the children and family," he added.

Health minister high level intervention at scandal hit Belfast Trust after 'toxic culture' reports
The Health Minister has placed Belfast Trust under the highest level of intervention amid serious concern over behavioural and cultural issues. The unprecedented move by Mike Nesbitt was taken after UTV revealed the details of a damning inspection report into the Royal Victoria Hospital's Cardiac Surgery Unit. UTV uncovered that a culture of poor behaviour by some heart surgeons at the unit led to a 'significant risk to patient safety,' as seen in a damning inspection report. UTV also spoke to a patient who witnessed extraordinary behaviour while on the operating table who alleged she was told to shut up and had gloves thrown at her. In a written statement to the Assembly on Thursday the minister said: "The department's performance accountability process for Belfast Trust has been raised to Level 5, the highest level. 'Level 5 is set out within my department's Support and Intervention Framework (SIF), which is overseen and managed by DoH's Strategic Planning and Performance Group (SPPG) and the Public Health Agency (PHA). "This level is expected to be required in only the most serious and exceptional cases.' Mike Nesbitt added: "Level 5 intervention is not about blurring lines of responsibility. "To be clear, it is the responsibility and duty of Belfast Trust – its senior executives and Board – to deliver the action plan for improvement, and to ensure that it leads to tangible improvements in the culture and working environments for this important service in Belfast Trust. 'Level 5 is about ensuring support, oversight and sustained focus. "It will assist the Trust to achieve stabilisation, ahead of its management reset with the appointment of a new chief executive. "I am putting in place external expert support for the Trust and have enhanced Departmental accountability, now formalised as a Departmental Accountability Team."
