Mark Peploe, Oscar-winning scriptwriter of The Last Emperor, dies aged 82

The Guardian5 days ago

Mark Peploe, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who collaborated with some of the greatest names in European film-making including Michelangelo Antonioni and Bernardo Bertolucci, has died aged 82. Peploe's family told the Guardian he died in Florence, Italy, after a long illness.
Peploe's prominence centred on the screenplays he wrote for some of the great European directors of the era, notably Italian new wave auteurs Antonioni and Bertolucci. Despite its chequered release history, the 1975 film The Passenger, directed by Antonioni and starring Jack Nicholson, has since been acclaimed as one the decade's cinematic masterpieces, and Peploe went on to forge a regular partnership with Bertolucci, winning an Oscar in 1988 for best adapted screenplay for The Last Emperor.
Jeremy Thomas, producer of The Last Emperor, told the Guardian: 'Mark was a Renaissance man, a brilliant writer of screenplays, and also an artist – he had a particular gift of a cultivation of the past which informed him as a writer. He was a very impressive person.'
Peploe was born in 1943 in Nairobi into an artistic family. His grandfather on his father's side was celebrated Scottish colourist SJ Peploe, while on his mother's he was the great-grandson of German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand. (His mother, Clotilde, was also a painter of note and his father, Willy, was an art dealer.) After a brief period living in a villa the family owned in Florence, Peploe studied at Oxford university, and was subsequently hired by London-based Canadian producer Allan King, working on documentaries about a wide range of creative figures including writer Norman Mailer, op-art pioneer Victor Vasarely and Never on Sunday star Melina Mercouri.
Peploe said he turned to writing after becoming 'frustrated' with documentary-making: 'I thought that if you wrote the script, you would be able to control the movie more than I did. It was an illusion, but I thought so at the time!' Peploe worked on the script for Jacques Demy's 1972 musical The Pied Piper (starring Donovan and Diana Dors), and then had his story The Passenger – originally titled Fatal Exit – picked up by Antonioni as the third in the Italian director's trilogy of English-language films, following Blow-Up and Zabriskie Point.
After co-writing the script with film theorist Peter Wollen, Peploe had intended to direct the film himself, but producer Carlo Ponti offered it to Antonioni after the latter's earlier project, entitled Technically Sweet, was shut down over budgetary concerns. Starring Nicholson as a TV reporter who swaps identities with a dead man, The Passenger also features Maria Schneider and Jenny Runacre and became renowned for a seven-minute tracking shot during its final scene. Due to a dispute with producers MGM, Nicholson acquired the rights to the film, and it re-emerged in the mid-2000s to considerable acclaim.
Peploe's sister Clare was also a film-maker, and the pair collaborated on the script for High Season, her directorial debut in 1987. The same year also saw the release of The Last Emperor, on which Peploe had worked with Bertolucci (who had married Clare in 1979). Produced by Thomas, the film won nine Oscars in 1988 for its lavish treatment of the story of Chinese emperor Puyi, who was deposed in 1912 but allowed to live in Beijing's Forbidden City until 1924. Peploe subsequently worked on two more of Bertolucci's films: the Paul Bowles adaptation The Sheltering Sky, released in 1990, and Little Buddha, starring Keanu Reeves as Prince Siddhartha, in 1994.
Peploe achieved his ambition of moving into directing with the 1991 psychological horror Afraid of the Dark, starring James Fox and Fanny Ardant, which has become something of a cult film, and an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's story Victory, released in 1996 and starring Willem Dafoe and Irène Jacob.
Peploe is survived by his partner, art historian Alina Payne; he was previously married to costume designer Louise Stjernsward, with whom he had a daughter Lola, and was subsequently in a longterm relationship with Gina Marcou.

Jeff Bezos changes wedding reception location in Venice after threatened protest

Campaigners in Venice have claimed victory after Jeff Bezos was reportedly forced to change the venue for his wedding celebrations in the city as his guests started arriving on Tuesday for the three-day jamboree. The main reception for the wedding of Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, a former TV journalist, was due to be held in the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a majestic 16th-century building in the city centre. But according to the No Space for Bezos group, the couple relented after activists threatened to fill the canals with inflatable crocodiles to block their celebrity guests from entering. The event will instead take place in Arsenale, a historic complex of shipyards surrounded by fortified walls that will be much harder for the protesters to penetrate. According to local press reports, the venue switch was also due to security concerns after the US joined the war between Israel and Iran, especially because Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, is rumoured to be attending the wedding. Venice authorities have upped security across the city, particularly in the Jewish neighbourhood. The 200 or so wedding guests, who might also include Elon Musk, Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio, will arrive in Venice on Tuesday and Wednesday. An estimated 95 private planes are reported to be landing at the city's airport. No precise dates or details have been confirmed, although it is believed the celebrations will begin on Thursday, with the couple exchanging vows on Friday in San Giorgio Maggiore basilica on the Venetian island of the same name. The big party is expected to be held on Saturday. Activists said that instead of trying to stop the wedding, they will organise a 'no Bezos, no war' protest. 'We feel as if we scored a victory,' said one activist, who asked not to be named. 'The crocodile initiative would have given a bad impression of the city – this is why the venue was changed even if the authorities might try to claim it was because of the war.' The campaign group emerged soon after Venice's millionaire mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, confirmed in March that the couple would be getting married in the city. Protesters say the event risks turning the world heritage site, which has long suffered from the effects of excessive tourism, into a playground for the rich. Posters featuring an image of Bezos's head on a rocket blasting into space – in reference to his Blue Origin space tourism venture – have appeared across the city. Greenpeace Italia and the British activist group Everyone Hates Elon have also joined the protests, unfurling a huge banner in St Mark's Square on Monday with a picture of Bezos laughing and a sign reading: 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax.' Greenpeace said the initiative was aimed at highlighting the 'social and climate injustice' of such events. 'Bezos embodies an economic and social model that is leading us towards collapse,' Greenpeace said, arguing that lifestyles fuelled by 'the arrogance of a few billionaires' are devastating for the planet. Brugnaro said he was ashamed of those who protest against people who 'bring riches' to the city. Eyeing an opportunity amid the controversy, Matteo Pressi, the mayor of Soàve, a walled village in Veneto with a population of about 7,000, said he had written to Amazon Italia inviting the couple to host their nuptials there instead. 'Venice is unique, but getting married in the most beautiful village in Italy wouldn't be so bad either,' he said.

Kim Kardashian and sister Kourtney look like clones in leopard outfits… can you spot the difference?

Kim Kardashian and her sister Kourtney Kardashian were almost impossible to tell apart in a newly posted Instagram snap this week. The pair were decked out in matching leopard print bodysuits that showed off their hourglass figures to sizzling advantage. Their outfits were the product of a collaboration launched last year between Dolce & Gabbana and Kim's shapewear company SKIMS. With strikingly similar hair and makeup, including dark lipstick and bangs, the family resemblance between Kim, 44, and Kourtney, 46 was more pronounced than ever. Both of them aimed their best enigmatic supermodel stares at the camera, mirroring each other's poses as they leant on a nearby wall. Kourtney's freshly uploaded picture was in fact a behind-the-scenes snap from an ad campaign with Kim late last year - more than two years after the two sisters were locked in a seething feud with Dolce & Gabbana at its center. In May 2022, the Italian brand was behind the designs for Kourtney's wedding to Travis Barker in Portofino, which came after a drunken Las Vegas ceremony in front of an Elvis impersonator and then a civil marriage obtained in Santa Barbara. That same year, Kim acquired a position as creative director for a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show, triggering a flare-up of tension between the sisters. Kourtney felt that Kim's partnership with the fashion house had diluted the 'specialness' of her own collaboration with them for her wedding. 'It feels awful that my sister used my wedding as a business opportunity,' Kourtney said on the family's Hulu show The Kardashians. 'She chose the money over me.' They ultimately buried the hatchet and could be seen on an episode of The Kardashians this February working on their leopard-print shoot for the brand. Kourtney addressed the feud on that episode, saying: 'I just felt so disconnected from my sister. I didn't feel like my feelings were heard or validated or understood. My feelings didn't matter. She just had to do it all.' She maintained however that 'we're sisters' and 'life is short,' which is why she decided to 'move on,' saying: 'I forgive her and she forgives me.' Kim similarly laughed off the notion that she and Kourtney would still be clinging to their ill feelings about a years-old dispute over clothes. 'For anyone that thinks that we wouldn't even be cool because we got into a fashion fight over what we wear is crazy,' said Kim. 'That's what we were doing in elementary school,' added the reality TV superstar, before claiming to have coaxed Kourtney back into the fashion world. 'When I really think back on how ugly that fight got, just to where we are now, laughing about it and shooting together a campaign - that's crazy,' she observed. 'I'm happy that I was the one to bring her out of retirement, I probably drove her to retirement, so I am the one that can bring her out.'

New mother is 'humbled' by change in her appearance after having a baby - but people tell her to get 'compensation'

A new mother has been subjected to a torrent of abuse online after revealing the change in her appearance since giving birth - with one person telling her she deserves 'compensation'. Wariara, a company founder who posts about 'motherhood and make-up', shared a video on TikTok that shows her both before and after she had a baby. The Kenya-based young mother is 'beyond humbled' by her new role as a parent - but fellow TikTok users have, for the most part, focused very negatively on her appearance. Wariara only posted the brief clip a few days ago, but it's already been viewed more than 10.4 million times. At the beginning of the nine-second video, glamourous Wariara is seen before she was visibly pregnant. Dressed in a tight-fitting, blue tank top, a black miniskirt and high-heeled sandals, the petite content creator looks striking with her wavy hair in a ponytail, heavy eye make-up and glossy lips. As she poses for the camera, there is a caption that reads: 'Me before having a baby'. In the next frame, captioned 'After', Wariara is standing up and breastfeeding her newborn baby. Having just giving birth, she is noticeably bigger than in the first part of the video and her appearance is far less groomed than it once was. Many new mothers would be able to relate to Wariara's practical choice of a nursing bra and shorts, just as they would instinctively understand why she is not wearing make-up and has not combed her hair. While Wariara seems unfazed by the change in her appearance, telling viewers in the text beneath the video that she is 'beyond humbled' to have become a mother, a number of TikTokers quickly honed in on her looks. In a particularly harsh comment, one person said: 'You may be eligible for compensation'. Someone else wrote: 'Girl, sue everyone involved'. Presumably referring to the toll new motherhood can take, a third person said: 'May this life never find me'. A fourth said: 'Y'all just give up on life when y'all get babies?' TikTok users weighed in with negative comments, though some were more supportive Some TikTok users, however, were much kinder, posting encouraging comments beneath the video. One person said: 'You still look beautiful. You are a momma now. It literally takes a female body one year to recover from having a baby'. A second said: 'It's okay mama, you are beautiful in every way'. While a third posted: 'Congratulations on the baby! You're beautiful before and after baby!' It comes as women from all over the world are now describing how their faces ballooned during pregnancy. Dubbing the term 'pregnancy face', thousands of women on social media have shared their 'before' and 'after' photographs of becoming mothers, in videos poking fun at their own transformations. Women suffering with the affliction complain of having extra pigmentation, puffy eyes, loss of definition in their face, and enlarged noses. One woman, Kezia from UK, shared a clip of how her changing face left her 'humbled' during the pregnancy of her first baby. The mother, who welcomed her baby last year, shared a clip of her face before she fell pregnant, appearing happy and confident as she posed glamorously for videos. Then, sharing her photos of her face at 37 weeks pregnant, Kezia appeared notably different, with a rosier complexion and puffier cheeks. Then, sharing her photos of her face at 37 weeks pregnant, Kezia appeared notably different, with a rosier complexion and puffier cheeks Captioning the clip, which racked up 13,000 views, she described having developed a 'fat face' in the latter stages of her pregnancy. She's not the only mother on social media who has noticed their appearance as sympathising mothers littered the comments with similar woes, with one begging to know if it 'went away' while another admitted they'd developed a 'double chin'. According to doctors, much of what those online describe is a result of water retention, a commonly reported side-effect among expectant mothers. The NHS website cites swelling as typically occurring in pregnant women, particularly in lower parts of the body such as the legs, ankles and feet. Effects can appear particularly pronounced 'if the weather is hot or you have been standing a lot.' 'Swelling is caused by your body holding more water than usual when you're pregnant,' the website reads. Healthcare providers suggest remedying symptoms by avoiding standing for long periods of time, and resting with feet up as much as possible. Drinking water, though seemingly counter-productive, can also reduce water retention, the NHS advises. For Tealla though, symptoms of water retention were further exacerbated by pre-eclampsia, a serious condition characterised by high blood pressure and having protein in the urine that can prove fatal if not properly treated (pictured during pregnancy) Another Australian TikToker, Tealla Anderson, revealed her changing appearance while carrying her baby. 'I love watching the swelling get progressively worse in each photo,' she captioned the video, which showed her face having grown puffier as she advanced through the trimesters. 'Here I am,' she said showing her appearance on the second day of her four day labour. For Tealla though, symptoms of water retention were further exacerbated by pre-eclampsia, a serious condition characterised by high blood pressure and having protein in the urine. The condition can prove fatal if not properly treated. 'I was 100kg here, however at this point I did not know I had pre-eclampsia so the swelling was so not! Just bad luck,' she wrote. Nevertheless, she said she felt 'so beautiful' and was 'honestly obsessed with myself at this stage'. 'Even now I look back at my birth video and I'm like, damn, her skin was clear and the feminine energy was high,' the new mother added. The condition can worsen what some mothers are calling 'pregnancy face', since pre-eclampsia can increase the risk of damaged blood vessels, according to Much like others who weathered the changes, the TikToker shared clips and pictures before falling pregnant and during, where she her face was visibly different Damaged vessels, which can be caused by high-blood pressure, allow more water to leak into and stay in the tissue which can prevent it from passing through the kidneys to be excreted. Changes to hormones during pregnancy can also bring out skin conditions including acne, puffiness, dark spots, sensitivity or redness, say experts at Simple Skincare. The phenomenon has been felt by hundreds on the app, with searches for 'pregnancy face' churning out a plethora of commiserating mothers. Among them, Dave Mart, who accumulated 5 million views on a clip sharing her facial transformation during pregnancy. Much like others who weathered the changes, the TikToker shared clips and pictures before falling pregnant and during, where she her face was visibly different. Sand also shared her experience having 'pregnancy face' on TikTok, posting a picture before she fell pregnant and another when she was in the final months of gestation. Mother to 'two beautiful autistic children', Sand shared the pictures on the app, where she amassed 87,700 views on the video. Poking fun at her own transformation, the British mother wrote, 'My face won't change that much when I'm pregnant', next to a photo of her looking slender and beaming at the camera. The next picture showed her while pregnant, looking markedly different. Making light of the changes, she said: 'It's the nose for me'. Poking fun at her own transformation, the British mother wrote, 'My face won't change that much when I'm pregnant', next to a photo of her looking slender and beaming at the camera Commenters shared in the experience, with one writing, 'my nose did this too! Why?', and another admitting their face underwent such a dramatic change their 'facial recognition on my phone stopped working'. Mothers on TikTok have previously complained about having 'pregnancy nose', having see their features balloon while carrying their babies. One, Gabriela Garrido, from Hackney, east London, was shocked to discover that her nose grew by a third by the time she reached the nine-month mark. Sharing the tale of her nose expansion on the app, Gabriela said her nose still 'isn't the same', even after giving birth, though it has started to deflate slowly. The post, captioned 'one of the many joys of pregnancy', shows Gabriela's nose pre-pregnancy compared to now, adding that it looked a lot 'wider and more round' at 37 weeks pregnant. 'My nose was wider and more round. It filled up as if someone pumped it like a balloon,' she said. 'I don't know if it doubled in size but maybe by one third. It was like Pinocchio when his nose grows out. 'It was around six months into my pregnancy, I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. I felt my face just looked a bit more swollen. 'In that last month I thought my nose definitely looked different, especially after comparing it to old pictures. 'Pregnancy nose' is believed to result from an increase in hormones, which leads to the dilation of blood vessels and creates more blood flow to certain areas of the body. This increase in size is usually only temporary and most women find their noses return to their normal size a few weeks after delivery - however it has led to the condition being compared to cartoon character Pinocchio on TikTok.
