Sounds From A Safe Harbour reveals headliners for September music extravaganza in Cork

Irish Examiner20-05-2025

Sounds From A Safe Harbour (SFSH) has revealed some of its headliners for the September event in Cork.
Not surprisingly, the biennial event is also planning a number of tributes to Eoin French, the late Cork musician who released music as Talos, and was involved with the festival since its founding in 2015. An opening concert entitled 'Remembering Talos' at the Opera House will feature many of the people who collaborated with French through the years.

Other ticketed events will feature electronic music producer Jon Hopkins, who teams up with American musician S Carey, for a double piano show; while UK singer-songwriter Ben Howard joins forces with Kate Stables (This Is The Kit). Danish art rockers Efterklang will headline the closing concert, while others on the bill from September 11 – 14 include Beth Orton, Villagers, Black Country New Road, and Rhiannon Giddens.
As well as the scheduled concerts, the festival will also run its usual series of impromptu concerts and other creative collaborations throughout the city.
This year's event is again headed up by Mary Hickson, with others on the curation team including actor Cillian Murphy, Bryce Dessner of The National, author Max Porter, and folklorist Billy MagFhlionn.
Festival director Hickson said: "This 10th edition of Sounds from a Safe Harbour feels especially meaningful. It's not only a celebration of the festival's evolution, but also a chance to deepen the relationships between artists and audiences that have been built over the years. SFSH has always been about collaboration and surprise, and this year, those principles are more alive than ever."
Further announcements are expected in the coming months, and tickets will go on sale at noon Friday, May 30 via soundsfromasafeharbour.com

Irish Love Islander Megan Forte Clarke 'easily charmed' as hopeful set for twist

Love Island's Irish beauty Megan Forte Clarke has said she is "easily charmed" as she makes her debut in the villa tonight. The reality TV show is back tonight, with 12 brand new singletons all looking to find 'The One'. The girls - Shakira, Meg, Alima, Sophie, Megan and Helena - enter the stunning Mallorcan Villa first and get to know one another. But it's dating that's on their mind and they quickly start talking about being excited to meet the boys and start shouting for boys to enter the Villa. They don't have to wait long as host Maya Jama arrives and takes them to the firepit for a chat. Getting straight to the point, Maya asks them what each of their types are with Shakira saying: "Tall, muscly, nice smile but for me it's all about personality. Witty, funny, charming." Helena laughs as she adds: "Personality always, my bar is low, I'm not fussy!" Meg teases that she wants: "Tanned skin, taller and naughty eyes." Sophie says: "I want someone that's a gentleman, not a man child." Megan says: "I'm easily charmed, which is the problem…" Alima says she's looking for: "A Prince Charming Disney Prince… with no facial hair." Maya then has a big announcement, which shocks the girls as she explains: "This year things are slightly different. You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality? Come and join me by the pool." As the girls line up, Maya explains: "Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?" On the boards the girls see descriptions for this year's boys: Ben, Dejon, Harry, Conor, Blu and Tommy. The girls have to decide who they'd like to couple up with based on these key stats with the boys' names, ages, jobs and a headline, such as "I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play, so I work very hard…", to help them decide who to pick. After discussing the profiles and trying to work out who might be right for them, Maya counts to three and they must run to a heart, with only one girl allowed to stand by each heart. With only seconds to make a decision, will they all get the boy they wanted? Or will the girls be left eager to swap. Now it's over to the boys. Decisions made, they enter the villa one-by-one to meet their match…will it be love at first write or were the girls too quick to judge their type? After the newly coupled-up Islanders spend a bit of time getting to know one another, later that evening, Maya makes a shock return to the villa with some huge news. Gathering everyone at the firepit, Maya reveals the day isn't over yet and someone new is already on their way. Suddenly, the series' first bombshell Toni makes a dramatic entrance into the villa. The Islanders are quick to realise she's come all the way from the US as Toni teasingly says: "Good evening UK! Surprise!" The Islanders can't believe there's an American bombshell and there's clearly some excitement amongst the boys… and some concerns for the girls. Maya then drops some more big news: not only has Toni just arrived all the way from the States, but she is also going to immediately steal one of the boys. Hearing the power is in her hands, Toni coyly replies: "Interesting…" And that's not all, Maya has more news for one Islander. The clock is ticking and their time in the villa could be over quicker than you can say señorita…

Two Irish cookbooks make Vogue's list of '41 Cookbooks That Everyone Should Own'

Two Irish cookbooks have just made the cut in a Vogue list entitled, 41 Cookbooks That Everyone Should Own, a wide-ranging selection of contemporary cooking styles from around the world leavened with a smattering of classic old culinary tomes. A transatlantic collaboration between American and British editors of the monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine, the list overwhelmingly comprises either British or American publications, including many of those covering cuisines from elsewhere in the world, but two classic Irish cookbooks, Diana Henry's How to Eat a Peach and Myrtle Allen's seminal Ballymaloe Cookbook, sit at the top tier alongside some other very worthy inclusions. Featuring a majority of women authors, and including several books on baking and desserts and the 'proudly queer' Please Wait to Be Tasted: The Lil' Deb's Oasis Cookbook by Carla Perez-Gallardo, Hannah Black, and Wheeler, the selection may well trigger some sniping from the tattooed boys kitchen brigade. There is, however, something refreshing about the manner in which it skirts the testosterone-laden books of certain male chefs, and, anyway, the inclusion of Rick Stein ( Simple Suppers), Thomas Keller ( Ad Hoc at Home), Paul Ainsworth (who worked under Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing) and the utterly vital The Book of St John: Over 100 Brand New Recipes from London's Iconic Restaurant by Fergus Henderson, should keep the male side of the house happy. Darina Allen and the late Myrtle Allen of Ballymaloe Cookery School. However, there is no denying the iconic status of certain of the women authors of books that should be in any self-respecting cook or chef's library, male or female, including Marcella Hazan ( Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking: 30th Anniversary Edition) and Julia Child ( Mastering the Art of French Cooking; with Louisette Bertholle, and Simone Beck), while more recent additions to the canon by Claire Ptak ( The Violet Bakery Cookbook) and Samin Nosrat's superb teaching tome, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, are set to be classics of the future. Other familiar names from this side of the Atlantic include Nigel Slater ( Real Cooking), Nigella Lawson ( How to Eat), and River Cafe London by Ruth Rogers, Rose Gray, Sian Wyn Owen, and Joseph Trivelli, is a re-issue of another ground-breaking publication. Towering over them is the current behemoth of the cookbook world, Yotam Ottolenghi, who merits two inclusions ( Ottolenghi Flavor by Yotam Ottolenghi and Ixta Belfrage; Jerusalem: A Cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi). Diana Henry's How to Eat a Peach has been included in a Vogue list entitled, 41 Cookbooks That Everyone Should Own, a wide-ranging selection of contemporary cooking styles from around the world. Picture: PA Photo/Chris Terry. Those in the list covering world cooking should probably be viewed more as introductions rather than definitive guides, not least Food From Across Africa: Recipes to Share a second generation take by Londoners Timothy Duval, Folayemi Brown, and Jacob Fodio Todd, while Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora by Bryant Terry celebrates African-American foods, and Dishoom: From Bombay With Love by Shamil Thakrar, Kavi Thakrar, and Naved Nasir, is the pick of the Indian cookbooks featured. 'Complete', in the title, Complete Chinese Cookbook by Ken Hom, may be a bit ambitious in claiming to comprehensively cover the myriad cuisines of this vast country built up over thousands of years but Hom is most certainly the man who introduced Britain (and Irish people in multi-channel land) to cooking Chinese food at home that was a cut above the local Chinese takeaway, and Bethlehem: A Celebration of Palestinian Food by Fadi Kattan, proprietor of London's wonderful Akub restaurant is a more contemporary cracker. Darina Allen in the kitchen with students at the Ballymaloe Cookery School, Shanagarry, Co Cork. Picture Dan Linehan Illustrating the extent of her talent and reach, Diana Henry, who first broke through in Britain, is the selection of one of the US editors, but Henry's lyrical approach to creating utterly delicious food taps effortlessly into the universal language of food. Though we are often guilty in Ireland, and Cork especially, of a parochial championing of our 'own', it is most definitely not the case when stating here that The Ballymaloe Cookbook by Myrtle Allen may well be the most important book of all on the list. Though it includes some classic, unique and very delicious recipes, this 50+ year old cookbook can equally be seen as a vital early staging post in the history of modern hospitality, as Myrtle Allen first set out her ethos of allowing fresh, seasonal local produce to star on the plate, the very first chef in the world to do this in a fine dining context — and it includes her famous Carrageen Moss pudding, one of the greatest Irish dishes of all!
