Colorado Springs voters have a chance to shape the city's future on April 1
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Tuesday, April 1 is Election Day, and in Colorado Springs, six city council district seats are up for grabs. Colorado Springs City Clerk Sarah Johnson joined FOX21 Morning News on Monday, March 31, to talk about the upcoming election and the expected turnout.
'What you're going to see on the ballot is one race for the district that your residence resides in,' said Johnson. 'And it's really important because they're your voice on city council.'
'These are your representatives,' said Johnson. 'We're out there, we're working, we're paying $8 for eggs, etc. We're seeing all these buildings going up everywhere. These are the people that determine whether that land use project gets approved or not.'
Historically, Colorado Springs has around a 40 percent voter turnout for municipal elections, according to Johnson, but she said she is hoping to break records in 2025. 'I know it's not an exciting ballot compared to last November where we had three pages, four columns each. This is a simple ballot, one page, one-sided,' said Johnson.
At this point, it is too late to return ballots by mail, so they must be dropped off at one of 28 ballot boxes across the city by 7 p.m. on election night. For drop-off locations, visit the city clerk's website.

Davison County Sheriff opposing possible prison near Mitchell
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The sheriff for Davison County is officially opposing the idea of building a new men's prison near Mitchell. Last week, Gov. Harr said prior to last week's task force meeting, he had signed a letter of support for the prison near Mitchell. 'This was done with hopes Davison County would make the final cut and some conversations would start,' Harr wrote. 'It was not done as a statement of 'we need a prison in Mitchell.' Well, as you know, this was successful, as the conversation all over town is on this topic.' Harr said he believes it has become clear there's a large number of residents opposed to a new men's prison being built near Mitchell. 'My job as Sheriff is to look out for the citizens of Davison County and I feel that is what is being done by coming to this decision,' Harr said. 'I would like to thank everyone that has reached out or made your concerns known in other ways.' Preparations for Trump's military parade in DC draws mixed reactions
WASHINGTON () — Plans are underway for Saturday's massive military parade celebrating the Army's 250th birthday, an event that is set to bring over 200,000 people to the National Mall. It also coincides with President Trump's 79th birthday. The parade will start at 6:30 pm Saturday and go along Constitution Avenue from 23rd Street to 15th Street NW. Festivities will include fireworks, a concert, celebrity appearances, and a showcase of hundreds of military vehicles and equipment, including Army tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Paladin Howitzers. There will also be a military flyover to mark the occasion, resulting in the temporary closure of Reagan National Airport (DCA) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Saturday. The celebration will cost a hefty $45 million. A portion of that cost will cover any damage done to D.C. roads by the Army tanks, which has been a point of contention for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. As World Pride flows straight into the military parade, DC officials say they're ready for anything To try and lessen the impact of those tankers, the Army is putting down metal plates along Constitution Avenue to absorb their impact. Repairs are set to begin immediately after the parade. DC News Now asked people how they feel about the parade Monday morning and received mixed reactions. 'I didn't think it was something we did, but I guess we're doing it,' said one passerby. Sothy Da, a mom of two children in the military, says it's a source of pride for her. 'I'm just so happy. and I'm so proud of the military,' she said. However, others are completely against it. 'I don't think it should be happening at all,' said Darren, who did not want to share his last name. 'This is stupid, I think. I can't believe that people are sleeping now.
