Former teacher loses over RM80,000 to TikTok shop scam
JERTIH: A former teacher lost more than RM80,000 after falling victim to a scam involving a fake offer to open a TikTok Shop.
Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad@Abu said the 67-year-old man came across the online business offer on Facebook on April 27.
'The victim was asked to send a copy of his MyKad and a selfie for account registration. Once the victim's alleged TikTok Shop was set up, he was required to make an initial capital deposit for the online shop.
'He then made the initial deposit and received a small return. The victim, who had grown increasingly confident, went on to deposit further capital, making 13 transactions in total to seven different bank accounts provided by the suspect, amounting to RM82,600,' he said.
He added that after the final transaction last Sunday, the victim began to suspect he had been scammed when the suspect continued to demand more capital.
'The TikTok Shop is also believed to be fake as it was said to be using USD as the currency and, although orders frequently appeared in the system, no payments were ever received.
'The victim lodged a report yesterday. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza claims he was prevented from leaving the country this morning after immigration officers at KLIA informed him that he had been blacklisted. "Today, on my birthday and Hari Raya Aidiladha, I found out I've been blacklisted and barred from leaving the country," he said in a Facebook post earlier today. In his post, he detailed plans for a short two-day trip to Singapore to attend a show featuring two of his favourite punk bands. Fahmi said he arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight and proceeded to the international immigration clearance counter, where he was directed to the immigration office. He said the officer asked for his travel documents and destination, then requested printed copies of his boarding pass and flight ticket. Despite showing digital versions on his phone, Fahmi claimed he was instructed to print physical copies himself, even though the office was equipped with a printer. With just minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member assisted him by driving him to a nearby hotel to print the required documents. Upon returning to the immigration office, Fahmi said he was informed that he had not been granted clearance to leave the country. According to him, the officer said that Bukit Aman had not approved his departure but did not provide any further explanation. He was then escorted out of the departure area. The New Straits Times has reached out to the police for comment.

Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. Shahmar Asecio pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim, to the charge against him. The offence is framed under Section 324/326A of the Penal Code. The court ordered Shahmar to serve the jail sentence concurrently with the sentence for another offence. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Processing, sale of ketum juice: 4 arrested in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: Four men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in separate raids across several villages in the district for suspected involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD) conducted the raids from May 24 to June 5. Advertisement He said the arrests were made following intelligence gathering in Kampung Taun Gusi, Tampasuk 1, Kampung Suang Punggur, Kampung Pintasan and Kampung Ambong. 'The first arrest involved a man at a house in Kampung Pintasan at 11.30am, along with the seizure of eight bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'In the second raid at 3.25pm at a house in Kampung Taun Gusi, a man was arrested along with 24 bottles, each containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice,' he said. On June 5, a raid was conducted at a house in Kampung Ambong where another two men were arrested along with 10 bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. Advertisement 'Several items believed used to prepare the ketum juice were also seized. 'Further investigations revealed that the ketum juice was sold to customers at RM25 to RM30 per bottle,' he said.
