Flashback Friday: Racing on the Big Sioux

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) —It's beginning to feel like Summer around much of KELOLAND this week with our temperatures hitting the eighties almost daily. The heat will have many families hitting the water this weekend in a number of ways. In this week's Flashback Friday, Bobbi Lower takes us back to 1982 for some friendly competition between boaters on the Big Sioux River. The river proved to be a bit easier for the canoeist than those on rafts. Even the best of the bunch had to get off and push part of the way. 'Yeah there was right at the beginning and every place after that we were kind of lucky ours went over the top so we could just paddle along.' While the participants in some regattas trained for months before the race, most of the big Sioux contestants were lucky if they got together the day before. 'Spent probably four and a half minutes at the other end and that was it.''A lot of Practice huh?''We did it last year, we thought we were still in shape.''Were ya?''Pretty fair, pretty fair.' Although the race seems simple enough its hard work.'Well yeah it looks easier on the side of the bank, from their viewpoint I'm sure it is.''What's so hard about it?''Well mostly pace yourself and you usually pace yourself for about half a mile and it ends up to be three.' The Egge's pacing must not have been too far off, they came in first. They say the secret is a fast raft, good crew, and a desire to win. Bobbi Lower, KELOLAND News. A weekend in the water with Parks & Rec

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A pair of weekend events from Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation will have competitors hitting the water. Lexann Littau is visiting from Wyoming and spending the morning water walking at Midco Aquatic Center. Pride fests and protests make for busy Sioux Falls weekend 'At my age, it's good for the joints, it's a lot easier, the impact's a lot easier on your joints,' Wyoming resident Lexann Littau said. What about walking laps against the current of the lazy river? 'Obviously, more challenging, but again, at my age, it's just a good thing to keep moving because if you don't move, you lose it,' Littau said. Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is hosting the first Lazy 5K of summer this Saturday at Drake Springs Aquatic Center, and it's not as easy as the name suggests. 'It's a lot harder than what you'd think, it's more of a workout than a lot of people would realize,' recreation coordinator Adam Livermore said. Adam Livermore is a recreation coordinator with Parks & Rec and says it's a 5K — 44 laps — but you don't have to do it alone. 'You can do a two- or four-person relay, so break it up, get some friends together and do it that way too,' Livermore said. You're also encouraged to set sail with the Great Cardboard Boat Race on Sunday at Kuehn Park Pool. 'Sign up, build a boat, cardboard and duct tape only,' Livermore said. 'So (no) wood, fiberglass, anything like that, we try to keep an even playing field, so whatever corrugated cardboard you want to use and then duct tape,' Livermore added. If your vessel isn't seaworthy, there is an award for the quickest to sink. 'Every now and again, we have one that doesn't make it very far or it capsizes right away,' Livermore said. One of the many reasons is that there will be lifeguards on hand. Registration is required for both events. The Lazy 5K is Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Drake Springs Aquatic Center. The cost is $20. The Great Cardboard Boat Race is Sunday morning at Kuehn Park Pool. Check-in begins at 9:00, followed by the race at 10:00. This event is free. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
