In 2023, Charley, now 37, embarked on her first stage tour.
It was a big deal, landing a part playing Diana Ingram in Quiz - her first notable role since she quit playing Debbie Dingle in Emmerdale.
And she shone on stage - Charley received rave reviews and insiders say it sparked a burning desire to take her life in a new direction.
A source close to Charley said: 'It was a big turning point for her when she landed the role and took to the road.
'It was the first time in years she was fully herself again, not mum, not Debbie - but a stage actress.
'There was a lot of downtime when she was on her own, and she really had a chance to think about what she wanted from her life.'
It was a tough time for me, it was a time of big changes and then this on top of things wasn't the best news in the world
Matthew on the split
Husband Matthew was meanwhile at their home in Yorkshire, looking after their boys Buster, 15, Bowie, eight, and Ace, four, completely unaware of what was to come.
He had just left Emmerdale and was getting ready to head to London for a stage show of his own.
Charley moved back to the family home, while Matthew headed to London to appear in Elf, where he met and fell for his current girlfriend - Heather Scott Martin, who was also working in the production.
An insider revealed: 'It was incredibly hard for Matthew because people saw him with Heather and assumed he was behind the split.

'He kept a dignified silence at the time and only decided to speak out about it all much later on.
'By that time, the dust had settled and Charley had found solace elsewhere.'
And that new independent direction was supported by close pal and fellow stage and screen star Sheridan Smith.
'Out of the blue'
Matthew, 45, has since spoken openly about the break up - admitting it wasn't his decision and he wouldn't have gone about it in the way Charley did, revealing his concern for their boys.
He recalled: 'Out of the blue, I got this news that she wanted to separate.

'It was a tough time for me, it was a time of big changes, and then this on top of things wasn't the best news in the world. But things happen for a reason and yeah.
'It was a very very tough time, but these things happen, and I'm not the first person in the world to have separated from their partner with kids involved.
'It was the fact that the kids were quite young, and it wasn't only a couple of years ago. That was a concern to me. We had to move onwards.'
He added on the podcast The Lewis Nicholls Show: 'I didn't expect it at all, it was a big shock. Separation is very difficult when you've spent 15 years together, your lives together and everything you own is together - just sorting out.'
'Huge support'
Once he returned from London, the former couple kept their house for another year before putting it on the market for £900,000 in January this year.
After Charley moved out in late 2023, she move in with best pal Sheridan finding comfort with her fellow single mum, an award winning TV, film and stage star.
Sheridan, 44, shares a son, Billy, with her former fiancé, Jamie Horn, and recently split with her boxer boyfriend, Dave Ryan.
The pals' bond grew further last summer when they jetted off to Greece for a sun-soaked holiday.
The two even spent Christmas together, which Charley called her 'favourite Christmas yet', sharing joyful snaps of their celebrations.
Charley became a big part of Billy's life and has supported Sheridan, who she calls 'bae', with childcare while she works.

A friend revealed: 'Sheridan and Charley have both been huge supports for each other.
'They have been through similar things and have also bonded over their love of acting.
'They love spending time together and even got a dog together.
'Their kids are all really close now too, so it just works really well.'
We're always going to have a relationship.
Matthew Wolfenden
Initially, things were frosty between Charley and Matthew as they tried to work out their new arrangement, but the former couple have put their differences aside and found a way forward.
Matthew explained: 'Everything was a bit up in the air for the first few months, but we're very very amicable, we're still friends and we've got kids together, so you have to be.
'We had the best 15 years together, and we had three amazing kids together. But in terms of co-parenting, we decided we'd do a week on, week off.'
And for now, the situation seems to be working well - Matthew is still with his new love, Heather, Charley is landing exciting new roles, but most importantly, their children are happy.
It's thought Charley was slightly perturbed about Matthew's decision to air their dirty laundry, but she is happy to move on.
She recently jetted off on a girls' holiday to Bodrum, Turkey and delighted fans with a series of bikini snaps as she relished her new independence before flying home to Sheridan.
The friend added: 'Matthew might have been blindsided about the split, but he has managed to work through his initial shock and concern. He feels better that people know it wasn't his choice.
'They have really shown how to co-parent properly and are determined to keep things amicable - no matter what.'

At the age of 63, White has begun the new snooker campaign in excellent fashion. He moved one step closer towards the £140,000 first prize at the Wuhan Open by overcoming Anthony McGill 5-2 in his qualifier. The victory means he has cruised into the last 64 of the prestigious Chinese competition, which starts on August 24. However, things are getting exciting away from the table, as 'The Whirlwind' has also secured a cameo in a new TV crime drama. He will be appearing in the television adaptation of 'Write To Kill', penned by renowned London author David P. Perlmutter. The plot centres on an aspiring, indebted writer grappling with creative stagnation until he's propositioned with a lucrative yet immoral task. Reports from Deadline reveal that White is cast as the director of an estate agency, who notably dismisses the protagonist within a snooker hall setting. The book, launched back in 2019, has a synopsis which says: "Caught up in the machinations of the underworld and at the mercy of a London gangland boss, Mad Dog, will this budding writer accept the money, commit the crime, and leave his innocence behind him?" Article continues below The project is currently under development and is slated to be filmed in London and New York. Confirmed cast members include Charlotte Kirk and Elena Sanchez from The Hunger Games. This week, White delivered a stellar performance against former World Championship semi-finalist McGill, 45 years after he first turned professional in 1980. The Scot clinched the first frame with a break of 51, but White then demonstrated his enduring skill by securing five of the next six at Leicester's Mattioli Arena. Impressive scores of 92, 80, 90, and 71 ensured that the seasoned player advanced to the last 64. There, the former Masters and UK champion is set to face off against former Grand Prix winner Marco Fu. Like White, Fu is competing on the main circuit courtesy of an invitational wildcard. Jimmy White rolled back the years in his Wuhan Open qualifier (Image: Getty ) Article continues below The Hong Kong player showcased his own enduring prowess with a 5-3 victory over recent Crucible quarter-finalist Chris Wakelin. Despite being well into his 60s, White still has an eye on competing at the top level for longer. He recently told the Stephen Hendry Cue Tips podcast: "For me to still be able to play and compete now is like a godsend. "I'm going to play for another three years and if I don't win a tournament, I'm going to stop. I'm 62. People think, 'Why are you doing it? You're nuts.'"

The star immediately "panicked" and ran off stage to put it back in her mouth while the crowd was left wondering what was going on. Unfortunately, LeAnn was unable to hide her dental disaster and had to own up to the crowd - while continuing to manually hold her teeth in for the rest of the show. LeAnn has now revealed what happened at her gig at Skagit Valley Casino & Resort to her fans on Instagram. She has described it as an "epic example of the show must go on". In a candid TikTok, LeAnn said, "In the middle of One Way Ticket I feel something pop. "If you've been around, you'll know I've had a lot of dental surgeries and I have bridge in the front and it fell out in the middle of my song... to which I panicked and said, 'Hold on!' and ran to the side of the stage and put it in." LeAnn returned to the stage and tried to continue but says she had to "get real with everybody" and tell them what had happened. "For the rest of the show, I was literally pushing my teeth in, like, every couple of lines and singing," she explained. "By the way, I never knew how many Fs and Ths and Shs I have in my songs, especially Can't Fight The Moonlight." LeAnn Rimes sings How Do I Live on The Voice UK LeAnne went on to confess that her teeth fell out for a second time when performing Can't Fight The Moonlight, which is arguably her biggest song. "It was the most epic experience ever. I don't usually have firsts in my career. That was a first and hopefully a last," she added. Laughing, LeAnn warned the front row of her next gig to "watch out", quipping, "If you catch them, please return them!" The singer hopes her story will make other performers feel better if anything ever happens to them on stage that isn't part of the act. LeAnn has been applauded by fans for her honesty, with one commenting, "I just love how real you are!!!" Another added, "Love that you can laugh about it! This is why we love you!" And a third replied, "You're the best. And a great example of a pro at their best regardless. Even if they have to hold their teeth in. Well done." LeAnn is currently touring but now has a two-week break.
