The popular UK pub company opened The Spon Gate as a Wetherspoons in July 2010, taking its name from one of the 12 gates around the medieval city's walls.
Two Wetherspoons pubs, The Flying Standard and The Earl of Mercia, will continue to operate in Coventry city centre.
It is understood that staff have been offered positions at these remaining locations.
Wetherspoons spokesperson, Eddie Gershon, said:
"It is a commercial decision taken by
Wetherspoon.
"We thank all our staff and customers over the years."
Punters have taken to social media to express their disappoint at the news of what they have labelled "the best" pub.
A Facebook user said: "It's the best one in town, not keen on the other two."
A second commented: "The only decent place in Coventry for a nice meal and good priced drinks.

"So sad it's to close, thank you for the brilliant service we have received over the years."
A third chipped in: "Another bar closing. The city is dying fast."
Why are pubs closing?
Meanwhile, a fourth added: "Another pub bites the dust."
Prior to becoming a Wetherspoons pub, The Spon Gate was a Chicago Rock Cafe on Spon Street, near St John's Church.
The gate from which it derived its name was demolished in 1771, after surviving Charles II left it as one of the remaining wall gates in 1662.
The pub has since kept photographs and drawings decorated around its walls to show Coventry's medieval history.
Last month, figures published by the British Beer and Pub Association Association also revealed around six pubs permanently closed every week last year, with the loss of 4,500
jobs
.
The trade body found 289 boozers served last orders for the final time in 2024 across
England
and
Wales
.
With employer National Insurance contributions being hiked with the minimum wage, more pubs are expected to shut this year too.
It has therefore not been all good news for Wetherspoons punters in recently.
The pub chain also exclusively revealed to The Sun in January it had increased the price of a host of drinks and meal deals by up to 30p.
Prices on drinks were hiked by 15p, while meal deals were increased by 30p.

Wetherspoons said a number of drinks, though, had not gone up in price including all draught lagers like Budweiser, Carling and Coors.

FORMER world darts champion Rob Cross has been disqualified as a director for five years after his company failed to pay more than £450,000 in tax. 2 Rob Cross has been banned as a director after failing to pay a £400k tax bill Credit: Rex 2 The 34-year-old former world champ is due back in action this weekend Credit: Getty The Insolvency Service also found that the Premier League Darts star withdrew more than £300,000 from Rob Cross Darts Limited between March 2020 and November 2023 that should have gone to creditors, including to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The world No.9 also took out more than £400,000 from Rob Cross Darts Limited – which was set up eight years ago to receive his earnings and prize money – in the form of a director's loan account by the time the company went into liquidation. In an attempt to repay part of his debts, Cross has entered into an IVA, a legally binding agreement where he has committed to making regular payments to an insolvency practitioner. The monthly contributions Cross makes to the IVA will vary depending on the income he receives through his performances at darts tournaments during this year and future years. READ MORE ON DARTS Cross famously won the Kevin Read, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: "When directors fail to pay the correct amount of tax, it directly impacts the government's ability to fund vital public services such as the NHS, schools, transport infrastructure and our national defence. "Rob Cross's company owed more than £400,000 in corporation tax alone when it went into liquidation. "For more than three years, he withdrew funds from the company which should have gone to HMRC and other creditors. Most read in Darts "This case demonstrates that we will pursue action against directors who deprive the public purse of much-needed funds. "The rules apply equally to everyone in business, and we expect all company directors to comply with their legal responsibilities. Fans sing along to Luke Littler's walk-on song as darts star shares footage from stage "Enforcing these rules consistently is crucial in maintaining a level playing field and preventing companies from gaining an unfair competitive advantage over compliant businesses that properly fulfil their tax obligations." Insolvency Service investigations found that the company received more than £1million from Cross's earnings between the start of March 2020 and the date of liquidation in November 2023. A total of £169,500 in sponsorships and £261,901 from his management company was also paid into the company. However, in the same period, Cross withdrew funds of at least £306,403 from the company which he acknowledged was 'to the risk and ultimate detriment of HMRC'. A further £665,419 was paid into the personal account of a connected party. By the time the company went into liquidation, it owed £403,896 in corporation tax, £49,071 in VAT, and £12,436 in PAYE and National Insurance contributions. The company had only paid £41,936 to HMRC between March 2020 and November 2023. Cross's director's loan account was also overdrawn by £423,608 when the company went into liquidation with liabilities of £579,805. The Secretary of State for Business and Trade accepted a disqualification undertaking from Cross – a former electrician – and his ban started on June 5. It prevents him from being involved in the promotion, formation or management of a company, without the permission of the court. Cross is due to play Andreas Harrysson in Copenhagen in the first round of the Nordic Darts Masters. SunSport have contacted his management team for a response.

Operating profits at drinks group C&C fizz 28% higher
Drinks group C&C has reported higher profits and revenues for the year ended 28 February 2025 and said that current trading for the year ahead is encouraging. C&C manufactures, markets and distributes branded beer, cider, wine, spirits and soft drinks across Ireland and the UK. Its brands include Bulmers and Magners cider as well as Tennent's and Five Lamps beer. Its operating profit before exceptional items for the year jumped by 28.5% to £77.1m from £60m, while its net revenue edged up to £1.665 billion from £1.652 billion the previous year. Adjusted profits before tax for the year rose to £55.9m from £38.8m, and C&C has proposed a final dividend of 4.13 cent, up 4% on the previous year. C&C said it was seeing a "limited" tariff impact on trading and costs, adding that current trading was encouraging and it was making no change to the expected outturn for the financial year. But it noted total employment costs in the UK will grow in the coming year due to the increase in the National Minimum Wage and employer National Insurance contributions announced by the UK government in its October 2024 Budget. "The introduction of further legislative activity, such as the Extended Producer Responsibility Levy and the already introduced Deposit Return Scheme in Ireland, will cause further price inflation, as these costs and taxes are passed on to customers and consumers. "Against this backdrop, the focus on prudent management of our cost base, alongside ongoing plans to simplify the business and improve operating efficiency, combined with continued strong customer service, remain our operating priorities," it added. C&C said its Tennent's and Bulmers brands achieved market share gains during the year and maintained their market-leading positions. Its Magners brand relaunch is underway with initial Off-Trade gains, it added. Roger White, C&C's group chief executive, said the group has progressed on a number of fronts over the last year, despite the ongoing challenging macro and market backdrop. "Our two leading brands, Tennent's and Bulmers gained market share and we see future growth opportunities for both. Our Premium brand performance is encouraging, benefitting from ongoing consumer appeal for premium beer and cider which is driving growth in this segment," the CEO said. "Within Distribution, Matthew Clark Bibendum continued to deliver positive momentum, achieving consistently improved service levels, growing its customer base by 8%," he added. Mr White said that year to date trading is encouraging. "With the key summer trading period ahead, we are executing our plans for the year, supporting our customers, investing in innovation and brand-building, people, and systems, whilst continuing to simplify the business and control costs, he said. "We remain focussed on building a solid platform from which we can maximise the potential of the group. We are developing plans to grow sustainably whilst delivering on our financial targets, creating increased long-term shareholder value," he concluded.
