On May 21, the world will celebrate International Tea Day, a moment not just to sip but to assess and do some reflection. This year's theme, 'Tea and Fair Trade,' calls for a renewed focus on sustainability, transparency, and justice in a global tea market whose value is expected to rise to $362 billion in 2029 from $260 billion in 2023 according to Statista. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global tea production reached 6.5 million metric tons in 2021, with China accounting for nearly half of that output. India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka followed as major producers. The industry supports an estimated 13 million people worldwide, including around 9 million smallholder farmers, typically individuals or families cultivating less than two hectares of land, often relying on manual labor and local resources for production. Smallholders are responsible for growing approximately 60% of the world's tea.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, tea is one of the most climate-sensitive crops globally. Rising temperatures, shifting monsoons, and extreme weather events are already disrupting production in key regions. Kenya's tea production fell by 13.55% during the first two months of 2025, primarily due to unusually dry weather conditions, according to the Tea Board of Kenya. Similarly, erratic rainfall patterns in India are threatening crop consistency and farmer livelihoods.
According to research supported by Future Climate for Africa (FCFA), tea production in African countries like Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda is highly vulnerable to climate change due to the crop's sensitivity to temperature, rainfall, and extreme weather events. Tea thrives only within narrow agro-climatic zones, making it especially susceptible to climate shifts such as prolonged droughts, heatwaves, and intensified storms.
As average temperatures rise and rainfall patterns become increasingly erratic, yields for tea plants are likely to decline, input costs will rise, and both smallholder farmers and large estates will face mounting pressure to adapt. Small-scale producers, who often lack financial resources, may struggle to afford climate-smart agricultural practices, like mulching, composting, or irrigation and could be forced to abandon tea altogether if conditions worsen. Meanwhile, large estates may face lower labor productivity and escalating costs to maintain soil quality and water availability. Without timely and targeted adaptation strategies, the long-term sustainability and profitability of Africa's tea sector remain at serious risk.

Sustainability in tea must go beyond pesticides and water usage. It must include ethical labor practices, transparent supply chains, and equitable profit-sharing. According to the Rainforest Alliance, certified tea farms typically demonstrate better wages, safer working environments, and more responsible land stewardship. According to the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, more than 13 million people are employed in the global tea sector, many of whom work under exploitative and unsafe conditions.
Women dominate the lower tiers of tea labor, from plucking to packaging and remain vastly underrepresented in management, ownership, or policy influence. According to the United Nations Development Program, tea garden workers in Bangladesh, most of whom are women, remain among the country's most marginalized groups. Despite their dominance in the workforce as tea leaf pickers and factory workers, they face low wages, harsh conditions, and limited access to healthcare and education for their children. Bangladesh, home to hundreds of tea plantations, is one of the world's leading tea exporters, yet the labor conditions for its predominantly female workforce remain deeply inequitable. In Bangladesh, where over 60 % of tea workers are women, wages often fall below $1.25 per day, as reported in the Alarabiya English.
In Kenya, one of the largest tea exporters in the world, a 2023 investigation by the BBC exposed systemic sexual abuse on plantations supplying major international tea brands. These cases are not isolated, they reflect structural issues in the global tea supply chain that disproportionately harm women.
As reported by the 2020 United Nations Common Country Analysis, structural gender inequality in tea-producing countries results in women being paid less than men for the same work and being more exposed to unsafe and exploitative conditions.
Tea shopping, consumers have a choice.
According to a 2020 McKinsey & Company U.S. consumer sentiment survey, more than 60% of respondents said they would pay more for products with sustainable packaging. This aligns with findings from NielsenIQ, which reported that 78% of U.S. consumers consider a sustainable lifestyle important. Products that make environmental, social, and governance claims experienced an average of 28% cumulative growth over five years, compared to 20% growth for products without such claims.
Ethical labeling empowers consumers to support better wages, safer conditions, support women's rights and climate resilience through everyday purchasing decisions, but it also requires supply chain transparency to be meaningful, not just marketing. As tea continues to flow across borders and breakfast tables, consumers, corporations, and governments all have a role to play. What we choose to support, ethically sourced or exploitatively produced will determine whether the future of tea is sustainable, equitable, and just.

AEG'sLA Kings teamed up with environmental nonprofit Grades of Green to revitalize green spaces at two schools in Inglewood, CA. The initiative sought to empower students through hands-on learning and environmental education as part of Grades of Green's Adopt-A-School Garden Program. On Wednesday, May 28, LA Kings employees along with volunteers from SoCalGas worked side by side with 60 students at Bennett-Kew Elementary School to transform the school's garden into a vibrant learning environment. Before any digging took place, teams followed safety best practices by contacting 811 two business days prior to have underground utility lines marked. This important step helps prevents injuries, property damage, service disruptions, and costly fines. Throughout the day, volunteers dug, planted, and taught students about the importance of green infrastructure, how trees improve air quality, and how gardens contribute to community health. Additionally, on Monday, June 2, LA Kings employees joined with volunteers from Farmacias Similares to revitalize a second campus garden at La Tijera K-8 School. The project kicked off with a speech from the school's Principal Robbie Tate, who shared how the garden would serve as a vital outdoor classroom for students to explore science, sustainability, and career pathways in the environmental field. Students from grades K–8 then participated in digging, soil preparation, and vegetable and tree planting activities guided by environmental educators from Grades of Green. 'Our partnership with Grades of Green is about more than just planting gardens,' said Amanda Apel, Senior Director, Community Relations, LA Kings. 'It's about giving students a space to learn, grow, and connect with the environment. But it also gives our employees an opportunity to drive meaningful change in communities throughout Los Angeles. We're proud to partner with organizations like Grades of Green, SoCalGas, and Farmacias Similares to make a lasting impact in our communities.' But these days, they are manufactured with less impact on the environment, thanks to ongoing efforts from employees at production sites across North America. 'Our manufacturing sites are key to Henkel's goal to become climate positive by 2040. Our teams work tirelessly to identify new ways to conserve natural resources. Our employees want to work for a company that walks the talk on sustainability, and they are a big part of making that happen.' Bjoern Jackisch, Henkel Adhesive Technologies Vice President of Operations & Supply Chain for the Americas region In recognition of World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, below are a handful of sustainability highlights from Henkel's front lines. Greenville, South Carolina As part of Henkel's NoWa (No Waste) initiative, the adhesives plant in Greenville, South Carolina, is saving 30,000 gallons of water and 56 tons of waste every year. Key to this success was the team's approach using brainstorming and 'waste walk' sessions eventually leading to process changes allowing for reuse of water for between-batch kettle cleans and the purges that occur when packaging begins. Additionally, the facility is transitioning to LED lighting and is using energy usage sensors, making Greenville a more energy efficient operation. Salisbury, North Carolina After taking a fresh look at water used in production, Henkel's Salisbury adhesives plant updated processes to allow multiple use of caustic waste from cleanouts. Other conservation measures include eliminating flushes for compatible products, transitioning to larger mixers to reduce changeovers, and standardizing cleanouts. Mentor, Ohio The Mentor adhesives facility leveraged Renewable Gas Certificates (RGCs) to achieve full carbon neutrality, the first production facility in North America to reach this milestone. Organizations can purchase RGCs from renewable gas suppliers to offset the carbon emissions associated with their natural gas consumption. The Mentor team is also actively striving to implement operational efficiencies and energy-saving projects to lower the plant's carbon footprint. Bowling Green, Kentucky Outside-the-box thinking helped the Bowling Green consumer brands facility achieve a 33% reduction in solid waste and significant cost savings. Previously, the plant paid to have cardboard waste recycled. Today, Bowling Green's cardboard supplier buys back the plant's scrap cardboard and uses it to recreate new cardboard that is resupplied to the plant. Bay Point, California Henkel's Bay Point aerospace adhesive manufacturing plant significantly reduced water waste by replacing three outdated steam injection water heaters, which discharge water after one use, with efficient closed-loop systems, which recirculate water. Outside the facility, the Bay Point team replaced traditional green landscaping with drought-resistant plants and a drip irrigation system to save over 450,000 gallons of water annually and reduce maintenance costs. How Stablecoins Are Changing Global Finance

Stable Coin. Stablecoins Cryptocurrencies Stable Market Price Value Coin Currency. The U.S. Senate has taken a major step toward regulating stablecoins by advancing the GENIUS Act—a bill that could reshape the digital finance landscape. Still under discussion, the legislation proposes strict reserve and transparency rules for issuers and signals growing government interest in crypto oversight. Stablecoins are crypto tokens that are typically pegged to the U.S. dollar. They allow users to transact within blockchain ecosystems without the volatility of traditional cryptocurrencies. Today, two clear leaders dominate the market. Yet, while Washington begins drafting policy, stablecoins have already found product-market fit in places far beyond Capitol Hill. The global use of stablecoins is growing steadily, regardless of whether the market is in a bull or bear phase. In Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and among crypto-native startups, they've quietly emerged as a preferred tool for payments, payroll, and preserving value in unstable economies. So what does this bottom-up adoption mean for the future of global finance? Are stablecoins here to stay, or will they be replaced by Central Bank Digital Currencies? And if they are here to stay, how to ride this trend? According to DefiLlama, the current market capitalization of stablecoins is around $250 billion, which is still a small share of the global M2 money supply, approximately 1%. In other words, we're still early. To understand where the growth might come from, it's worth examining what stablecoins are used for—and why they've become so popular. Stablecoins market capitalization. The first is USDT (Tether), the largest stablecoin by market capitalization. Interestingly, Tether has also emerged as one of the most financially efficient companies in the world on a per-employee basis. According to a tweet published by Avichal Garg, co-founder of Electric Capital, the company generated an estimated $85.6 million in profit per employee in 2024: Profit per Employee (USD) vs. Company The second major player is USDC, issued by U.S.-regulated firm Circle. The company went public on June 5, under the ticker CRCL, with its stock surging over 200% on its first day of trading—pushing its market capitalization above $20 billion, according to Barron's. These two companies currently dominate the stablecoin space. Others worth mentioning include: • USDS (formerly DAI), which started as a decentralized stablecoin but has become only partially decentralized due to its large holdings of U.S. Treasuries and USDC. • USD1, a politically charged entrant tied to Donald Trump's network, which has generated some discomfort among Democratic lawmakers. Rep. Maxine Waters (D–Calif.), the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, voiced strong objections during a joint hearing on digital assets, stating: 'I object to this joint hearing because of the corruption of the President of the United States and his ownership of crypto and his oversight of all of the agencies.' Stablecoins are enjoying instant product-market fit: everyone needs access to crypto dollars — a version of the U.S. dollar that can be easily converted back to fiat, yet offers several advantages over traditional USD. While much of the attention on stablecoins focuses on regulation and market cap, their real momentum comes from how they're being used: The most obvious example of stablecoin usage is international payments. Sending U.S. dollars across borders with the traditional banking system typically involves SWIFT. Banks charge between $5 and $50 per transaction, often around $20, regardless of the transfer amount. That means sending $1,000 could cost users up to 2–5% in fees. In addition, the SWIFT transfers can take several business days to settle. Compared to transferring the same amount via stablecoins, even in the worst case, fees might only be a few dollars, and the transaction typically settles within minutes. That's at least 10 times cheaper and potentially 100 times faster. There's also another major benefit: users avoid capital controls, currency conversion hurdles, and heavy compliance bottlenecks, particularly relevant when sending money from or to countries with restrictive financial systems. The second use case — using stablecoins as a means of payment — is less advanced, largely due to regulatory inertia. Governments generally want citizens to transact in their local currencies, and stablecoins challenge that sovereignty. The lack of clarity discourages businesses from accepting them, especially given the lingering memory of Operation Choke Point, when certain industries were unofficially cut off from banking services. Despite the current U.S. administration's relatively crypto-friendly stance, the stablecoin bill GENIUS Act has yet to pass through Congress. This uncertainty keeps most merchants and payment providers on the sidelines. Once clear legislation is enacted, trust in stablecoins like USDT and USDC will likely surge. As for CBDCs, a concept that is often met with skepticism in the cryptocurrency community, the need for a government-backed digital dollar seems increasingly unnecessary. According to U.S. Treasury International Capital data, Tether's treasury holdings alone rival those of sovereign investors like Germany or Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Circle's portfolio is comparable to that of Thailand or Sweden. With such significant exposure to U.S. debt and growing political opposition to CBDCs—including campaign promises from Donald Trump to block their development—stablecoins may have already secured their place as the preferred digital dollar infrastructure in the United States. The third major use case—decentralized finance —is where stablecoins are already thriving. They serve as the foundational currency for DeFi applications, enabling lending, borrowing, swapping, yield farming, and more—all without centralized intermediaries. The functionality mirrors traditional finance but with key advantages: it's global, permissionless, and often more efficient. According to Dune Analytics data in the DeFi Report 2024–2025 , approximately 151 million wallet addresses interacted with DeFi protocols in 2024. While this figure likely includes duplicates, it provides a useful upper bound for estimating user activity. By comparison, World Bank data from 2021 shows that 4.6 to 4.9 billion people used traditional banking services globally. This also underscores the early stage of adoption of DeFi. But, once frameworks are established, DeFi usage could accelerate rapidly. Following these three cases, it's fair to say that stablecoins are here to stay. And this may only be the beginning: as crypto infrastructure intersects with artificial intelligence, stablecoins could enable AI agents to transact autonomously, unlocking programmable, real-time finance. So, how can investors position themselves to benefit from this trend? There are many ways, some of them look obvious, like buying CRCL as it has become a public company, or investing in Coinbase stocks (COIN), a company which is steadily growing its own layer two DeFi ecosystem. Some are more complicated, like finding companies to invest in that adopt stablecoins in their operations — for payments, payroll, or international transfers — and which are likely to scale faster than their peers, thanks to lower costs and global reach. Check Stripe, PayPal, and Deel as examples. On the decentralized side, assuming a favorable regulatory framework materializes, in a next way of adoption, DeFi applications could rapidly pull users away from traditional banks. In that case, there is significant upside in owning tokens or equity in platforms like Uniswap, Aave, or even Hyperliquid — all of which are well-positioned to become foundational players in the next generation of financial infrastructure. Derivative DEX trading volumes. But don't forget the risks to watch. Transformation won't come without resistance. The banking lobby remains one of the most powerful political forces in the world, and it's unlikely to welcome a shift toward 'magic internet money' without a fight. Regulatory headwinds, political gridlock, and coordinated opposition from legacy institutions are all real risks investors should keep in mind. But we know that fortune, at least in markets driven by emerging technologies, often favors the brave.
