Cardinal Robert Prevost elected as 1st American pope, takes name Leo XIV
CAIRO – 8 May 2025: Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected on Thursday as the first American pope, and took the name Leo XIV.
Prevost, 69, will be the267th pontiff after being elected by the College of Cardinals to succeed Pope Francis, who died April 21 at the age of 88.
According to Vatican news, Prevost was Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent.
He spent his childhood and adolescence with his family and studied first at the Minor Seminary of the Augustinian Fathers and then at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, where in 1977 he earned a Degree in Mathematics and also studied Philosophy.
In his first statements shortly after being elected pontiff, Prevost remembered Pope Francis and thanked him, saying: 'Let us keep in our ears the weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis, who blessed Rome - the Pope who blessed Rome and the world that day on the morning of Easter.'
'Allow me to continue that same blessing. God loves us, all of us, evil will not prevail,' The new Pope said standing on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, facing a huge crowd.

Rana Atef The National Research Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical has determined the timings for the Eid al-Adha prayers on Friday, in various governorates and cities across Egypt. In Cairo and Giza, the prayer will be at 6:19 AM, while in Alexandria, it will be at 6:21 AM local time. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the institute revealed that the residents of Taba will be the first to perform the prayer at 6:05 AM, while the residents of Sallum will be the last, with their prayer at 6:39 AM. The institute also noted that the Eid prayer in Port Said, Saint Catherine, and Sharm El-Sheikh will take place at 6:11 AM, while in Suez, Taba, Ismailia, and Damietta, it will be at 6:13 AM. In Al-Arish, the prayer will be at 6:06 AM, and in Damanhur at 6:19 AM. Regarding other cities, it was stated that residents of Tanta, Benha, and Shebin El-Koum will perform the prayer at 6:18 AM, while those in Mansoura, Zagazig, and Shalateen will pray at 6:16 AM. In Kafr El-Sheikh, the prayer will be at 6:17 AM, and in Fayoum at 6:22 AM. Moreover, the prayer will take place in Beni Suef and Qena at 6:21 AM, and in Minya, Assiut, Sohag, and Aswan at 6:25 AM. In Abu Simbel, the prayer will be at 6:34 AM, in Marsa Matrouh at 6:31 AM, and in Hurghada at 6:15 AM. Cologne evacuates 20,000 people after three World War II bombs discovered
CNN — The German city of Cologne is moving 20,500 people in its largest evacuation since World War II, after officials discovered three massive, unexploded bombs. The American bombs – two 20-ton weapons and another that weighs 10 tons – were found in a shipyard on Monday, the city said, causing a huge 'danger zone' to be sealed off on Wednesday morning. A hospital, two retirement centers and the city's second largest train station were among the facilities emptied out. Schools, churches, museums and two of the city's cultural landmarks – the Musical Dome theater and the Philharmonic Hall – also fell within the evacuation zone. The discovery of unexploded weapons is a frequent phenomenon in Cologne, which was decimated by Allied bombing during World War II, but no operation of this size has been carried out since the end of the war, the city said. Most of central Cologne was destroyed by Allied bombing raids during World War II.'Everyone involved hopes that the defusing can be completed by Wednesday,' city authorities said in a statement. 'This will only be possible if all those affected leave their homes or workplaces early and stay outside the evacuation area from the outset.' The city told residents to 'stay calm (and) prepare yourselves' for the evacuation, recommending they visit friends or family and avoid workplaces in the sealed-off area. Officials said they 'cannot make any reliable predictions' about how long the operation will take, adding that specialists cannot begin to defuse the bombs until the entire area has been evacuated. 'If you refuse, we will escort you from your home – if necessary by force – along with the police,' the city's statement said. Allied nations conducted 262 air raids of Cologne during World War II, killing approximately 20,000 residents and leaving the city in ruins. Nearly all of the buildings in the Old Town were destroyed, as were 91 of the city's 150 churches. A massive reconstruction effort took place after the war, with the Old Town rebuilt and major landmarks restored. But small evacuations still take place on a regular basis when unexploded ordnances are found. Around 10,000 residents had to leave their homes in October when another American bomb was found, and in December, 3,000 people were asked to evacuate.
