Up to their necks in stink: Mum, son rescued after car plunges into sewage pond in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU, May 9 — A car ended up in a sewage pond after its 49-year-old driver accidentally swerved off the road into the roadside water catchment near Kingfisher Park early this morning.
The driver of the Perodua Viva and his 79-year-old mother, were trapped at first but managed to clamber out of the wade and wade to safety with the help of passers-by using a long branch.
One of the passers by was an off-duty fireman who saw them as he drove by, and got into the pond and assisted the victims to safety and also attached a cable to the vehicle for towing later.
Lintas Fire and Rescue Department station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said both victims were safe.
'The off-duty fireman, Hasrulnizam Zain, had assisted the victims by holding out a long wooden branch to them,' she said.
'The woman got out of the car through the back door and held on to the stick to clamber to safety while the man had escaped via the driver's seat window,'
Earlier, she said the department received a distress call at around 8.28am, and a team was sent to respond.
Agustavia said firemen were on site to monitor the situation and the vehicle was towed by a private company later.

Penang councils urge MCMC probe into viral TikTok videos alleging corruption, launch investigations
GEORGE TOWN, June 6 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urging an investigation into two viral TikTok videos containing allegations of corruption and double standards involving the council personnel. In a statement today, MBPP said that four city councillors — Tan Soo Siang, R. Harikrishnan, Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali, and Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman - also lodged a police report against the individual who uploaded the videos. 'MBPP is deeply disappointed by the videos circulating on TikTok. The content includes numerous false and biased claims that are not based on accurate facts or data. The videos amount to slander and misrepresentation of the council,' the statement read. MBPP said that it will not hesitate to take legal action against the content creator or any party attempting to tarnish the council's reputation without credible evidence. The videos in question accuse MBPP of accepting bribes in exchange for allowing foreign nationals to operate businesses and claim that MBPP enforcement officers apply double standards in their operations. In a related development, the Seberang Perak City Council (MBSP) said that it has launched an internal investigation into another viral video that allegedly shows one of its officers engaging in corrupt practices. According to MBSP, a meeting was held with the business owner involved to gather detailed information about the incident. The council emphasised that a full internal inquiry is underway to address the allegations made in the video. (Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have found no criminal elements in the death of a Taiwanese man who was run over by a train after falling onto the tracks at the Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station on Tuesday. Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the case remains classified as sudden death, Harian Metro reported. 'There is no indication of any criminal activity. From the start, it has been treated as a sudden death case. 'We have the evidence showing that he fell,' Hussein told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters today. The body of the man, in his 60s, was sent to the forensic department of Sultan Idris Shah Hospital for a post-mortem. In February, a blind elderly man died when he was struck by a train after losing his balance and falling onto the tracks at the Titiwangsa LRT station. Prasarana Malaysia Bhd later said it planned to install platform sensors at LRT stations to enhance passenger safety, particularly for people with disabilities. The company also said it would begin installing platform screen doors at LRT stations, similar to those used in MRT stations.
