Two men plead not guilty in New York crypto kidnapping and torture case
Two crypto investors pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges they kidnapped and tortured an Italian man for his Bitcoin in an upscale Manhattan townhouse.
William Duplessie and John Woeltz were ordered held in custody until their next court date on July 15 during their arraignment in Manhattan criminal court.
Their lawyers had sought their release on $1 million bail and home confinement with their parents.
They argued the victim wasn't in distress during his time in New York, saying they had obtained video and photo evidence showing the accuser smiling and laughing during the time of his purported captivity.
Among the evidence the lawyers said they have obtained are photos of the accuser moving freely in and out of the house, even taking a trip to an eyeglass store with one of the defendants.
'This narrative is entirely false," said Sam Talkin, Duplessie's lawyer. 'The story that he is selling doesn't make sense.'
Prosecutor Sania Khan argued that someone supporting the defendants was selectively leaking videos to present a counternarrative of the events
'Victims of abuse are not always going to act the way that we expect them to," she added.
Duplessie and Woeltz, who appeared in handcuffs and prison uniforms, didn't speak in court other than to formally enter their pleas.

They face charges of kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors say on May 6, the two men lured the victim, who they knew personally, to a posh townhouse in Manhattan's Soho neighborhood by threatening to kill his family.
The man, a 28-year-old Italian national who has not been named by officials, said he was held captive for 17 days.
He said the two investors tormented him with electrical wires, forced him to smoke from a crack pipe and at one point dangled him from a staircase five stories high.
The man said he eventually agreed to hand over his computer password, then managed to flee as his captors went to retrieve the device.
Woeltz, 37, has described himself in interviews as a blockchain investor who spent time in Silicon Valley before returning to Kentucky's burgeoning crypto-mining industry.
Duplessie, 32, is listed as a founder or investor at various blockchain-based companies.
New York City police are also investigating two detectives who worked security at the townhouse where the man says he was tortured.
The officers have been placed on modified leave pending the outcome of the inquiry, although their lawyer has said there's no indication either officer witnessed any of the alleged criminal activity.

An Arizona father is facing charges after his young daughter was shot dead by her brother who found their dad's assault rifle in his bedroom. Layla Ramos, five, was shot in the torso inside her South Phoenix, Arizona home on June 3, and was rushed to a nearby psychiatric hospital, where her family hoped she would receive emergency medical treatment, according to AZFamily. He had apparently fled after seeing an ambulance arrive at the psychiatric center, and returned home because he realized he left other children alone in the house with his illegally-owned AR-style rifle, 12 News reports. When officers finally caught up with him, the father allegedly told police that he was outside the family's home when he heard a loud bang. He then ran into his nine-year-old son's room, where he said he found Layla had been shot, Arizona Republic reports. At that point, court documents say he admitted to police that he stored the rifle on the top shelf of his son's room and said the boy 'must have grabbed the gun.' Neighbors also noted that after the shooting, the unidentified brother ran out of the house, frantic and screaming. Two 14 year olds were also in the boy's room at the time, the court filing states. Ramos-Jimenez even allegedly admitted he knew he was not legally allowed to own a firearm due to a 2021 felony drug conviction, but obtained the AR-style weapon through a 'private sale' for 'personal protection.' The father was then taken into custody on suspicion of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, but was released on his own recognizance the following day - despite prosecutors' objections. They had asked a Maricopa County judge to hold Ramos-Jimenez on a $250,000 secure bond. 'He brought a gun into a home with kids - and not just any gun, it was an assault rifle,' prosecutors argued in court last week, according to ABC 15. 'He stored it in his nine-year-old's bedroom and if this gun had not been in the house, we wouldn't have had the outcome we did.' The Maricopa County judge, though, ultimately denied the state's request and let Ramos-Jimenez walk free. He is now not allowed to have contact with any of the victims or witnesses to the shooting. In the meantime, the family is hoping to lay Layla to rest at a burial site for babies and children, her uncle wrote in an online fundraiser. It described the young girl as the family's 'little princess who got her wings way too soon. 'She was so loving, smart and a truly beautiful soul,' Layla's uncle, Jose Ramos, writes in the fundraiser - which has already raised over $10,000 for her funeral expenses. Mother-of-four Brittany Fortinberry, 31 is accused of making teenagers as young as 13 have group sex with her at her Indiana home. 4 Her husband Nicholas has filed for divorce and the couple can no longer afford their monthly payments for the home, according to the New York Post. The house was allegedly the site of her sick sex exploits and a stripper pole and sex toys were found inside. Court documents claim that the former Eminence High School teacher groomed at least 10 boys - some as young as 13 - through gifts, manipulation, and disturbing sexual advances. The math teacher from Indiana has been accused of sexual abuse of children as young as 13 with claims that she made them wear "Scream" masks and an orgy and "dreamed" about having sex with them. One of the children told police that Fortinberry spent $600 on him and other boys at the mall and then had them wear the masks from the horror movie while she sexually abused them. She met her alleged victims at two different Morgan County schools in 2024. The teacher allegedly told the victims she would kill herself if they reported the abuse, charging documents claim. One accuser harrowingly told cops that if they did not want to have sex with her, she would allegedly rape them and say, "Just let it happen" while also forcing them to watch as she abused the others. To lure the children in and manipulate them, the Indiana educator allegedly showered the boys with expensive football gifts and plied them with drugs put into their food, according to Fox 59. Even the sick teacher's home was allegedly set up for her depraved activities with cops finding a stripper pole and sex toys. The teacher is now facing more charges from prosecutors relating to five more alleged victims bringing the number of accusers up to six. Prosecutors told TMZ that they are preparing to file 24 more felony charges against the teacher including five counts of Level 1 child molestation. This would bring the 31-year-old's felony charges up to 29. As well as child molestation, she will face charges of sexual misconduct with a minor, dissemination of matter harmful to minors, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If convicted just of the Level 1 molestation charges against her, Fortinberry could face between 20 and 40 years behind bars for each count. This could lead to a life sentence if the judge ruled that the sentences would be served consecutively, the prosecutor said. If found guilty of all counts, depending on her sentencing it is likely she will die behind bars. Her husband Nicholas Fortinberry is also facing charges of intimidation and failure to report a crime for allegedly knowing about the abuse and threatening the boys to keep quiet. The 31-year-old's husband allegedly threatened to "slaughter" one of the victims in front of his family if he spoke out. Detectives believe that at least 10 victims may have been targeted by Fortinberry over the years. Authorities began investigating her in August 2024 after a 15-year-old's grandmother reported that she had molested him, sent nude photos, and drugged him. Since then, several more alleged victims have spoken out, with one saying he came forward because he didn't want Fortinberry to "molest more kids." The teacher resigned from Eminence High School the day after the first allegations surfaced. Fortinberry had been hired as a substitute teacher for Martinsville Schools on October 24, 2023.
