HBCU flip gives Grambling State basketball coach fresh start
Grambling, LA - Patrick Crarey II is ready for the second chapter of his HBCU experience as he begins laying a fresh foundation at Grambling State University. The veteran coach, known for his program-building success at Florida A&M and the NAIA level, was officially introduced as the new head coach of Grambling State men's basketball, taking over a respected program with lofty expectations.
'This is indeed a proud day for Grambling State University and an exciting new chapter for our men's basketball program,' Grambling State AD Dr. Trayvean Scott said at the Friday morning press conference.Crarey is no stranger to the HBCU landscape. After guiding FAMU to its most wins since 2008 and a postseason berth for the first time since 2019, he has now been entrusted with continuing Grambling's proud basketball legacy. The new Tigers head coach made it clear: he's here to build a winner.
"As a builder, I lay the foundation, the new one myself," Crarey said. "I'm about relationships, then championships… to enhance the brand of Grambling and to win at the highest levels."
Crarey acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Donte' Jackson, who led Grambling to multiple SWAC championships.
"Much respect to my brother, Donte Jackson, aka Tae Jack," Crarey said. "He built this program with his bare hands. I will continue the tradition on the foundation of his success."
Crarey gave special thanks to Florida A&M for his opportunity at the Division I level. "A special thank you to President Beard and Robinson at Florida A&M for giving me the opportunity to be a Division I head coach. To Angela Suggs, who I adore - thank you. From day one to the end, you worked for me and I'll forever be grateful."
He also acknowledged the support of former FAMU athletic director and current Virginia State AD, Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. "To Gram Fam, Tiffany Dawn Sykes - clap for her. What's understood doesn't need to be said. You believed before anyone. And I'll always love you for it."
Looking forward, Crarey offered a vision rooted in both competitive excellence and cultural pride.
"This move was about winning within an organization that believed in my capabilities from day one," he said. "Today starts our new journey together… What you believe about yourself, others will believe about you too."
"It's time to let everyone know the Tigers are here."

Per a statement by interim president Dr. Timothy Beard to HBCU Gameday, Suggs was placed on leave with pay until further notice and deputy directors of athletics Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson will run operations. Sugg's arrest and subsequent investigation and charges stem from her work with the Florida Sports Foundation, in which she served as president of the organization. The Florida Sports Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization that serves as the Sports Industry Development Division for the State of Florida. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released a statement detailing the scope of their investigation. 'The investigation began in November 2024 after FDLE received a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce's Inspector General with an audit of Suggs' business credit card purchases and corresponding travel reimbursements,' the statement read. 'The investigation revealed Suggs misused her FSF-issued credit card to make wire transfers and cash withdraws and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling more than $24,000. The statement continued, 'When asked about the unauthorized charges, Suggs claimed some were for business meals and others were accidentally charged to the business card. She failed to fully repay (the foundation) for her personal expenditures.' In September 2024, Suggs was appointed Athletic Director at Florida A&M University, succeeding Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. A proud Tallahassee native and FAMU alum, Suggs has a longstanding connection to FAMU Athletics. Suggs recently facilitated the hiring of Florida State legend Charlie Ward to become the next basketball coach for the institution. Fisk's ambitious move to start the program played a hand three years later in the athletic department choosing to discontinue it. Scheduling became challenging because gymnastics is the only sport at Fisk that does not compete against other HBCU schools, forcing the program to get creative and requiring the team to travel longer distances than the university's other sports. 'While we are tremendously proud of the history our gymnastics team has made in just three years, we look forward to focusing on our conference-affiliated teams to strengthen our impact in the HBCU Athletic Conference,' athletic director Valencia Jordan said in a statement. 'Fisk is grateful for the hard work, dedication and tenacity of its gymnasts, staff members, and coaches who made this program possible.' The school said it will work with the affected athletes and coaches to ensure a 'seamless transition.' The announcement came just weeks after Fisk standout Morgan Price — a three-time All-American who became the first HBCU gymnast to record a perfect 10 — transferred to Arkansas, where she will join her older sister Frankie. Talladega College, an HBCU in Alabama, attempted to follow in Fisk's footsteps in 2024. That program shut down after one season due to financial concerns. ___
