Victorian parliamentary hearing into cult groups commences

Sky News AU11-05-2025

Psychologist and cult survivor Maria Esquerra has spoken on the 'overdue' parliamentary hearing by the Victorian government into cults and fringe groups.
'Myself with a lot of other people, mostly who grew up in cults, actually … we got together, and we made a bunch of submissions to Chris Couzens in Victoria in the legislative assembly, and that's what's triggered this,' Ms Esquerra told Sky News Australia.
This hearing states they are not judging people's religious beliefs, but rather examining groups who harm others emotionally, financially, and physically.

McKenzie slams Marles over sanctions on Israeli ministers

Nationals Senate Leader Bridget McKenzie criticises Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles for his agreement with the sanctions placed on two Israeli ministers by the Albanese government. 'I don't think having criticism internally to a country, isn't a reason to sanction ministers that are democratically elected, even if you don't agree with what they say,' Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia. 'If you're actually interested in peace in Gaza … ceasefire has to occur and the precursors are, return the hostages dead or alive, and Hamas surrender, then a genuine ceasefire process can get underway.'

‘You can't have it both ways': Bridget McKenzie faults Penny Wong's sanctions on Israeli ministers

Nationals Senate Leader Bridget McKenzie says the Foreign Minister Penny Wong needs a 'serious reality check' when it comes to making policies that cloud Australia's bilateral alliance and relationship with the US. 'We don't spend enough on defence; we can't defend ourselves without these long-standing relationships,' Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia. 'We need to take that all into consideration when making foreign policy announcements. 'The reality is, Minister Wong's decision to sanction these two Israeli democratically elected ministers does fly in the face of the long-standing bipartisan approach to Israel, to a negotiated two-state solution. 'I don't think you can have it both ways.'
