Iran strikes U.S. air bases in Qatar and Iraq in retaliation

Saudi Gazette6 hours ago

DOHA— Iran announced on Monday night that it launched missile strikes targeting American forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and a US base in Iraq, marking a significant escalation in its confrontation with the United States.
The announcement aired on Iranian state television alongside martial music, with a caption hailing the attack as 'a mighty and successful response by the armed forces of Iran to America's aggression.'
Iran said it had fired missiles toward a US military base in Iraq, Iranian state media Tasnim reported. Iran's missile operation against American bases in Qatar and Iraq is code-named 'O Abu Abdullah,' meaning 'Blessings of victory.'
The strike on Al Udeid Air Base came just hours after Qatar temporarily closed its airspace as a precautionary measure amid Tehran's threats to retaliate for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar was attacked 'by short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles originating from Iran,' a US defense official said Monday. 'At this time, there are no reports of US casualties,' the official said. 'We are monitoring this situation closely and will provide more information as it becomes available,' the official added.
Non-sheltered American planes were moved out of Al Udeid Air Base last week, according to a satellite image that was taken on June 19 that shows nearly empty tarmacs. This means the planes were moved before Iran launched a missile attack on Al Udeid Monday in response to the US striking its nuclear facilities over the weekend, according to media reports.
Qatari officials have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage or casualties from the reported attack. Earlier, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned an attempted missile strike on Al Udeid, calling it a violation of the country's sovereignty and warning that Qatar reserves the right to respond.
The development further heightens fears of a broader regional war, as Iran continues to respond to the U.S. and Israeli military actions with direct attacks in the Gulf.

North Korea Denounces US Strikes on Iran

North Korea has condemned the US strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, describing them as a grave violation of a sovereign state's security interests and territorial rights, according to Reuters. Strong Condemnation '(We) strongly denounces the attack on Iran by the US which … violently trampled down the territorial integrity and security interests of a sovereign state,' the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement carried by KCNA news agency. North Korea's Foreign Ministry said that the US and Israel are the major reasons for the current tensions in the Middle East. These tensions are born out of Jerusalem's 'ceaseless war moves and territorial expansion' accepted and encouraged by the West.' Both Iran and North Korea have kept friendly relations and have been suspected for decades of military cooperation and ballistic missiles development. 'The just international community should raise the voice of unanimous censure and rejection against the U.S. and Israel's confrontational acts,' the statement said. US Strikes on Iran On Sunday, the US launched airstrikes targeting Iran's nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. 'The United States showed that they have no respect to United Nations Charter. They have no respect to international law. They crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities,' Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said. Moreover, Araghchi accused Trump of not only betraying Iran by abusing its commitment to diplomacy but also deceiving his own voters by implementing to the wishes of a war criminal. 'He has betrayed not only Iran by abusing our commitment to diplomacy but also deceived his own voters by submitting to the wishes of a wanted war criminal who has grown accustomed to exploiting the lives and wealth of American citizens to further the Israeli regime's objectives,' he added. Israel-Iran War On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. Israel also killed three more Iranian nuclear scientists, bringing the total number of scientists slain to nine, Gulf News reported. Currently, both countries are trading missiles and attacks amid intensifying efforts to halt the conflict. IMF Warns US Strikes on Iran Could Damage Global Growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director, Kristalina Georgieva, has warned that the US strikes on Iran could have negative impacts on global economic growth. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Georgieva said that the IMF was monitoring the energy prices closely, warning that any increase in oil prices could have reverberating effects on the global economy. 'There could be secondary and tertiary impacts. Let's say there is more turbulence that goes into hitting growth prospects in large economies – then you have a trigger impact of downward revisions in prospects for global growth,' she said. The IMF Director's remarks came as the Iranian parliament approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping waterway linking the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The parliament's vote followed the US strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities. About fifth of the world's oil supplies flow through Hormuz. If Iran shut the Strait, this could lead to an oil supply shock that drives energy prices higher, increasing inflation and hurting economic growth. Following the US military escalation against Iran on Sunday, oil price increased by more than 5% to reach $81.40 before declining slightly. On Monday morning, Brent crude increased to 1.2%, at $77.94 a barrel. If oil supplies' flow through Hormuz was cut in half for one month and then reduced by 10% for 11 months, the price could reach $110 per barrel, according to Goldman Sachs estimates. Washington has pushed against the possibility of closing Hormuz. The US State Secretary, Marco Rubio, warned that such a move would be an 'economic suicide' to Iran, urging China to intervene. 'I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the strait of Hormuz for their oil,' Rubio told Fox News. Short link : Post Views: 8

Kremlin also revealed that US President Donald Trump had not informed Russian President Vladimir Putin in detail about his planned strikes on Iran in advanced. However, they had discussed the possibility of US military intervention in general. Urgent Talks On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was set to head to Russia for urgent talks with Putin after the US strikes. Araghchi had announced that he would meet Putin and have 'serious consultations' in Moscow. 'We always consult with each other and coordinate our positions,' Araghchi said. 'The United States showed that they have no respect to United Nations Charter. They have no respect to international law. They crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities,' he added. Araghchi added that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu 'dragged Trump into war with Iran.' The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the US cannot escape the consequences of its airstrikes against Iran. IRGC also said that Iran would not fear Israel or the US, calling them 'criminal gangs ruling the White House and Tel Aviv'. Israel-Iran War On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists.
