Lara gets doping ban for failed test after Wood bout
Former featherweight world champion Mauricio Lara has been banned for two years for an anti-doping violation, UK Anti-Doping has announced.The Mexican tested positive for banned substance betamethasone on 28 May, 2023 after his loss to Nottingham's Leigh Wood in Manchester.Betamethasone is banned in competition by Ukad.Lara, 27, claimed the positive test was caused by an injection into his shoulder on 12 May in the build-up to the Wood bout, but Ukad said that did not explain how betamethasone entered his system.According to Ukad, he offered no other explanation for the failed drug test.The ban has been backdated to start from 7 March, 2024 and will end on 6 March, 2026.Lara has fought once since losing to Wood, drawing with Daniel Lugo in Mexico in February 2024.He rose to prominence in 2021 by beating Leeds star Josh Warrington in a huge upset, before going on to claim the WBA featherweight title from Wood in February 2023.Wood, 36, reclaimed that belt in their rematch later that year.

The Welsh legend's two-year stay with his boyhood hasn't worked out as well as all had hoped it would, with injuries curtailing his time in a Bluebirds shirt. "The Welsh captain rejoined his childhood club during the summer of 2023, before taking up the role of caretaker manager for the final three games of the 2024/25 campaign. His move has taken one step closer in the last 24 hours, with outlet Telediario reporting that FIFA have lifted a transfer ban on the Pumas on Thursday, meaning the club can now register new players. "This Thursday, the highest governing body of world soccer took the next step to allow Club Universidad Nacional to sign players during the current transfer window," the report states. "This comes after UNAM officials fixed the administrative error that originally put them in this predicament a couple of weeks ago. "With this issue resolved, university leadership can now fully focus on planning the next tournament, where the goal will be to return to the Liguilla and compete for the championship. Article continues below "Now off the registration ban list, the latest signing that the Pumas are aiming to make official as soon as possible is Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Though born in Montebello, California, De La Hoya spent his formative years in East Los Angeles, a predominantly Latino community. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, De La Hoya held an American flag and Mexican flag in the boxing ring after winning a gold medal. "As a proud Mexican-American, I carry immense gratitude for the sacrifices my family made in coming to the U.S. from Mexico in pursuit of a better future,'' De La Hoya, 52, also said in the statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. "Their courage gave me opportunities I'll never take for granted.'' De La Hoya, who won eight world championships in six weight divisions before announcing his retirement in 2009, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014.
