Abu Dhabi to host EuroLeague final four in May
Jan 28 (Reuters) - Abu Dhabi will host the final four of the EuroLeague basketball's 2024-25 season in May, the continental competition said on Tuesday.
Spanish outlet El Pais reported that Abu Dhabi paid $25 million to outbid other contenders and secure the rights to host the culmination of the competition's 25th season.
EuroLeague said it has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi's Department of Cultural Tourism and the 12,000-seater Etihad Arena to host the semi-finals on May 23, followed by the third-place match and the final on May 25, in the UAE capital.
"I would like to thank the city of Abu Dhabi for showing their confidence in EuroLeague basketball," EuroLeague president Dejan Bodiroga said in a statement.
Abu Dhabi will be the second city outside Europe to host the final of the top-tier basketball event, after Israel's Tel Aviv held the marquee fixture in 1972, 1994 and 2004.

The news comes after it emerged that Bayern are also interested in another Arsenal target. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, but Sky Germany are reporting that the winger is open to joining Bayern. Leroy Sane recently joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, with his Bayern contract expiring at the end of the summer, and it is claimed that Williams could replace him at the Allianz Arena. The report adds that the deal is 'still at an early stage', with Williams having a release clause in his contract of around €60m (£51m). Bilbao president Jon Uriarte recently spoke out about the forward's future and suggested he could remain at the club. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Williams, meanwhile, said last summer: "Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white. "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year." Barcelona, though, are also interested in Williams and reports from Spain claim that they have opened talks with the player's agent.

The Scotland captain is entering the final year of his Liverpool contract with the English Premier League champions close to sealing a deal for Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez. Kostas Tsimikas is expected to depart Anfield this summer, which would leave Robertson facing a fight with Kerkez for his position and the prospect of being second choice under Arne Slot. Atleti are on the hunt for a new left back and have been heavily linked with want-away AC Milan star Theo Hernandez, who has turned down a move to Saudi Arabia in order to try and make the move to the Spanish capital. But Fabrizio Romano claims that Diego Simeone is a huge fan of Robertson and the Scot is higher on their list of targets than Hernandez. However, it's thought that a deal with Liverpool this summer could be difficult due to the high regard the Reds hold Robertson in. Next summer or eve January could be a different story. The 31-year-old has revealed that initial talks over his contract have taken place with Liverpool, but that he remains unclear on what the future holds. Robertson admitted that close friend Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Merseyside for Real Madrid was difficult, and the chance to link up with his pal in the Spanish capital could make a move to Atletico all the more tempting. 'We have discussed [my future], of course we have," he said. "We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure. "All I know is I fly off on holiday and it's well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That's all my focus is. 'I can't look too far ahead, I never have done that so I'm not going to start doing that now. "I know the position I'm in, I know I've only got a year left. A lot's getting spoken about it, a lot's getting said, but my pure focus is focussing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids. Martin Brundle vows to defend suspended F1 steward 'until my last breath'
Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle has promised to support Derek Warwick 'until my last breath' after the FIA steward was suspended. On Friday, motorsport's governing body announced that Warwick had been stood down from his role as a steward for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. Earlier in the week, the former Formula 1 driver gave an interview to Plejmo in which he discussed a wide range of topics including Max Verstappen's controversial crash with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix. 'Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix,' a statement read. 'He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva for the remainder of the event. 'After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.' The FIA have been looking to clamp down on officials giving interviews like Warwick did, with Johnny Herbert notably sacked from his role in January. The three-time F1 race winner publicly criticised Verstappen's driving at last year's Mexico City Grand Prix – a race he had been a steward for – with the FIA saying Herbert's 'duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible'. This latest incident has seen Warwick criticised by fans, leading to Brundle, who raced against his fellow Brit in the 1980s and 1990s, leaping to his defence. 'Derek Warwick is one of the most genuine and passionate people and racers I have ever known,' Brundle wrote on Twitter. 'He is a salt of the earth genuine guy. Touching on a number of topics, here is a snippet of the interview via Plejmo: On Max Verstappen and George Russell's crash: 'I can see why Max got angry, because I think he thought he was hard done by with Charles [Leclerc] on the straight and I think he thought he was hard done by George. 'Should he have done what he did, in turn 5 with George? Absolutely not. Did he get a penalty for it? Yes. 'He got 10 seconds and 3 points, which only brings him 1 point away from a race ban. Should it have been harsher? I think they got it about right actually.' On if Verstappen will leave Red Bull: 'Well obviously he's talking to every team, but when you say every team, that's only really McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, and maybe Aston Martin 'Aston would be a big gamble, but they do have Adrian Newey there. I think the big, big paycheck would come from Aston Martin if that's what he's interested in. I think at the end of the day he'll stay at Red Bull.' On Lewis Hamilton's struggles: I don't know why Lewis Hamilton can't get going in a Ferrari. I think that's an enigma really. I think people underestimate, including Lewis, maybe how difficult it is to join a new team. 'Do I want Lewis to win races and challenge for the World Championship? Yes. I think he deserves it. I think he deserves that 8th world title.' On the 2025 title fight: 'I think Oscar Piastri is the complete deal, and I think he's got on top of that car. 'I think Lando Norris needs to change a few things, mentally, in order not to make these silly mistakes. If he does then for sure Lando can be world champion, but it will either be Lando or Oscar.'
