Emerging spearhead revitalising newly-confident Lions
With their final "hoodoo" ticked off and a new spearhead hitting his straps, Brisbane are primed to hit the back end of their premiership defence high on confidence.
The Lions claimed their first victory over Geelong in 22 years on Friday night, with second-year key forward Logan Morris kicking five goals in the 14.8 (92) to 6.15 (51) win.
It means the reigning premiers (10-1-4) will head into the bye in second place and confident they can again do something special, despite losing key defender Jack Payne to injury.

When asked if Brisbane were lifting based on their opponents, Fagan said "maybe" as he also reflected on their win over Hawthorn at the MCG and a tough away loss to Adelaide.
"Maybe there's a little bit of that in it, but we've got to become better than that," he added.
"But still, when we got to the bye last year, we were 13th. We got to the bye this year, we're second.
"So plenty of things still to work on, but I think the boys have done a good job to win the flag, weather the storm in the first part of the year. It hasn't been smooth sailing, all the teams come at you.
"So I'm pretty pleased with where we're at but it's a hard competition so you've just got to keep going, don't you?
Brisbane's first win over the Cats in Geelong since 2003 was massive in the race for the top two.
Collingwood (44 points) lead Brisbane (42) and Geelong (40).
"It's a huge win for us," defender Jaspa Fletcher told AAP.
"Fages brought it up in our meeting this week. It's obviously a bit of a hoodoo that we wanted to tick off.
"He was pretty set on it in our meeting. It really fired the boys up.
"He's been massive for us over his time here at the club. So I guess this win's for him as well."
Young spearhead Morris, 20, now has 30 goals in 14 appearances this year after backing up his five-goal haul against GWS.
"I love the fact that he was able to back up a great performance," Fagan said.
"I said to him during the week 'mate, you've had a bit of attention this week, plenty of publicity - do you reckon you'll get a kick this week?
"I think that was the secret, I said that to him and he wanted to prove me wrong.
"He's a good, level-headed young fella, he's an exciting footballer. Twenty years of age, being able to do that sort of work on the field. It's exciting for Brisbane supporters that we found one.
"Losing Joey (Daniher) last year was a bit of a blow but Logan's stepping up."
Cam Rayner was at his dynamic best, kicking three goals,while Fagan believed small forward Kai Lohmann was finding confidence again.
Brandon Starcevich was substituted after shutting down Patrick Dangerfield but Fagan confirmed he'd just been cramping in his second game back from a long lay-off with concussion.

Benji Marshall has hit back at reporters after opting to leave Tallyn Da Silva as an unused sub on the bench in the loss to the Raiders after reports emerged the young gun has been granted permission to negotiate with other clubs. Although the Wests Tigers may have found the long-term NRL answer to Lachlan Galvin's role with Latu Fainu having his best game in the jersey. On Friday, the reported he's been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs and is free to walk early if he can secure a deal. The 20-year-old talent stuck behind Api Koroisau at the Tigers and has played 23 first-grade games since his debut in 2023, and looks every bit an NRL-level player. But he's spent the majority of 2025 in reserve-grade due to the fact the Tigers have Koroisau entrenched as their No.9. Da Silva is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2026, but The Tigers had already stated the 20-year-old was free to leave if they extend Koroisau's current contract (also ending at the end of 2026). Da Silva was brought back into the Tigers fold on Friday night against the Raiders with Marshall set to use him off the bench. However, Marshall opted to leave Da Silva on the bench for the whole 80 minutes. The timing of the snub left Tigers fans confused. Despite trailing 16-0 at half-time, the Tigers made a comeback but needed some energy in the final 10 minutes. Although Da Silva was nowhere to be seen with Marshall feeling like the experience of Koroisau was more important. When Marshall was asked about his decision to leave Da Silva sitting as an unused substitute in the cold all night, the coach hit back. 'We needed to cover for (starting hooker) Api (Koroisau) as well, if he needed a spell, but the game's in the balance, you want your best players on the field,' Marshall said. 'If there was an opportunity to put Tallyn on, I would have, but we needed Api on the field.' When pushed on whether the young gun was leaving the club, Marshall played it coy. There were plenty of concerns when Galvin left the club with the Tigers' attack set to take a hit with the playmaker joining the Bulldogs. However, Fainu showed why many were fine to see Galvin leave with the young star showing plenty of promise in his return from injury. Jarome Luai was strong in the second-half for the Tigers and combined well with Fainu to send Starford To'a for a try. Fainu started on the bench, but came on played 53 minutes at five-eighth. He ran for 108 metres and made 16 tackles, but it was his creativity that had viewers impressed with the youngster. Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters claimed Fainu: "Changed the whole way the Tigers were playing." While Greg Alexander admitted: "They could't tackle him, he was a handful.' This is promising signs for Marshall going forward, but the Tigers now drop well outside the top eight with a tough game against the Manly Sea Eagles next week at Brookvale Oval.

British and Irish Lions lose their Australia tour warmup to Argentina
DUBLIN — First, the good news for the British and Irish Lions: They didn't appear to suffer any tour-ending injuries against Argentina on Friday. The bad news: They lost to Argentina 28-24 in the warmup to their nine-game tour of Australia. The result, humbling for now, will be regarded as a minor setback, maybe even an inspiration, if the Lions go on and win the three-test series against the Wallabies. The Lions led the Pumas for only 12 minutes in the entire match and had two prime attacking chances in the last four minutes. But their lineout maul was stopped in its tracks, then a Lions penalty in front of the posts was overturned due to a neck roll by Tadhg Beirne. 'We weren't as consistent as we would have liked to be. We only showed glimmers of what we can do,' Lions captain Maro Itoje told broadcaster Sky Sports. 'When we were on it, we looked good, we just need to do it more consistently. Argentina showed us where we are lacking. I am happy we had a hard-fought game. We live and learn. This is only match one.' Despite a training camp in Portugal that was meant to help cement combinations, and nine English starters, the Lions still looked less cohesive and determined than Argentina, which was missing a dozen front-liners and had only two proper training runs. The Pumas beat the Lions for the first time in a history between them that goes back to 1910. They also warmed up the 2005 Lions in Cardiff, and suffered heartbreak when Jonny Wilkinson landed a penalty in the 87th minute for a 25-25 draw. No draw this time. The Pumas were ruthless with their chances, and matched the Lions with three tries. Two tries from inside their own 22 were the game's highlights. The Lions enjoyed majority possession, had the better scrum, and gave away only five penalties but they forced too many passes and the Pumas defense was outstanding. 'You can't win a test with that error rate,' Lions coach Andy Farrell said. 'We lost enough balls in that game for a full tour, throwing balls that weren't on. They were hungrier than us with the ball on the ground. 'There was good and bad throughout. We were just a little bit off, I take responsibility for that. I hope we are better off for that.' The Lions were nowhere near their test side. Few players from last weekend's finals of the English Premiership and United Rugby Championship were involved, and only six of the 16 Irish players. But the Pumas were understrength, too, for a match outside the test window. Argentina scored the first points, a Tomas Albornoz penalty, and the first try, finished by wing Ignacio Mendy from an Albornoz miss-out pass to fullback Santiago Carreras in a gap. Meanwhile, the Lions had two tries in the first quarter ruled out for knock-ons but Bundee Aki finally got their first touchdown when he busted through three defenders. The second quarter was all Argentina. Albornoz kicked two more penalties and converted his own injury-time try for 21-10. The Lions didn't protect ruck ball in the Argentina 22 and Rodrigo Isgro and Carreras set Albornoz away in an 80-meter counterattack. The Lions rubbed out the deficit thanks to the forwards. A penalty try from a lineout maul also sent Pumas prop Mayco Vivas to the sin-bin, and the Lions used the man advantage to give Beirne a converted try. But moments later, an Isgro aerial catch started a sweeping counterattack involving Albornoz, No. 8 Joaquin Oviedo, debut starter Justo Piccardo and Matias Moroni that was finished by a swan dive from Santiago Cordero.
