ISRO averts 10 collisions in space, backs requirement of Space Traffic Management system

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 2024 successfully averted 10 potential collisions involving its satellites. As per the Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) released by the space agency, collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAM) were carried out to avoid damages. The space agency also flagged the increase in space activity across the globe and highlighted the need for an active Space Traffic Management (STM) system. 'The sheer number of close approach alerts indicates the alarmingly rising congestion in space, especially low-Earth orbit,' ISRO said in its report, adding that with the easier access to space through rideshare, coupled with technological advancements, the future space traffic is not likely to show any signs of slowing down.
The agency added that spaceflight safety in the future is expected to involve more intensive coordination and cooperation between various spacefaring entities. 'It is desirable that a suitable collaborative framework evolves for meeting STM requirements,' ISRO said.
The space agency received more than 53000 alerts by the Combined Space Operations Center (CSpOC), the US–led multinational space operations center for its satellites, which were analysed using data from flight dynamics resulting in 10 anomalies.
ISRO carried out six critical manoeuvres in LEO and four in GEO. For

an orbit maintenance manoeuvre was also conducted to mitigate conjunctions with Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA mission launched in 2009.
Currently, India has 22 satellites in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and 31 in GEO (Geo-synchronous Earth Orbit), which are important to protect. In 2024 India undertook five launches from Sriharikota and all of them were successfully placed in their intended orbits.
ISRO said the number of CAMs was lesser in 2024 compared to the previous year. 'This is because improved close approach analysis methodology with larger conjunction screening volume and usage of more accurate ephemerides helped to meet collision avoidance requirements by adjusting orbit maintenance manoeuvres on several occasions and avoiding exclusive CAMs.'
The space agency said post the corrections, 89 manoeuvre plans were revised to avoid post-manoeuvre close approaches with other space objects for LEO satellites.

New Delhi: The retreat of glaciers is not only a warning but an immediate reality with far-reaching implications for water security, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of billions of people, minister of state for environment Kirti Vardhan Singh said on Saturday. Addressing a plenary session at a high-level international conference on Glaciers' Preservation in Tajikistan's Dushanbe, Singh highlighted the global and regional consequences of glacial retreat, and that the phenomenon is accelerating, with disproportionate impacts on mountain regions such as the Himalayas. He reiterated India's deep-rooted concern, as a country intrinsically connected to the Himalayan ecosystem, and outlined a series of ongoing initiatives aimed at glacial monitoring and climate adaptation, a statement issued by the environment ministry said. Singh highlighted that India is undertaking strategic actions under the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE) — a key component of India's National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) — as well as the establishment of a Centre for Cryosphere and Climate Change Studies, designed to advance research and monitoring of glaciers and glacial lakes in the Indian Himalayan Region. 'India is leveraging advanced Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), to systematically monitor changes in glacier mass, extent, and dynamics. These efforts are further strengthened through coordinated research by key national institutions, including the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE),' Singh said. These initiatives are crucial to advancing scientific understanding of glacier systems and supporting data-driven policy formulation for the sustainable management of India's water resources, he added. 'India has strengthened disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region through improved early warning systems and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk mapping, coordinated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Regional cooperation was underscored as vital for strengthening resilience, improving data-sharing frameworks, and fostering coordinated responses to the challenges facing mountain ecosystems,' Singh informed. Singh stressed India's commitment to equity and the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR–RC) in international climate action. He emphasised that while South Asia contributes minimally to global cumulative emissions, it remains highly vulnerable to climate change impacts.

New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Gaganyatri to carry out shortlisted microgravity research experiments onboard the International Space Station (ISS) during the upcoming Axiom-4 mission, as per an official statement from ISRO. The Axiom-4 mission (Axe-4), which Gaganyatri Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will pilot to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 8. The ISRO has shortlisted seven microgravity research experiments proposed by Indian Principal Investigators (PIs) from various national Research and Development laboratories, academic institutions for implementation on the International Space Station (ISS) during the upcoming Axiom-4 mission with its Gaganyatri. The field of microgravity research with potential applications in diverse areas such as human health, physical/life sciences, material research, novel pharmaceutical development and biotechnology offers significant opportunities to the national scientific community, the statement added. The research includes the impact of microgravity radiation in the ISS on edible microalgae. Sprouting salad seeds in space: relevance to crew nutrition; survival, revival, reproduction, and transcriptome of the eutardigrade Paramacrobiotus sp. BLR strain in space; effect of metabolic supplements on muscle regeneration under microgravity; analysing human interaction with electronic displays in microgravity; impact of microgravity on growth and yield parameters in food crop seeds These experiments aim at utilising available research facilities onboard the ISS. Considering the safety-driven operational philosophy as well as other mission constraints of human spaceflight missions, these shortlisted microgravity experiments are undergoing stringent evaluations and reviews on the ground before launch. The experience gained through this effort in the implementation of these experiments will nurture a microgravity research ecosystem in the country, resulting in the induction of advanced microgravity experiments in various disciplines in the Indian Space Programme, it added. The upcoming Axiom-4 mission with ISRO's Gaganyatri marks the visit of the first Indian ever to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla is set to become the first astronaut from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to visit the station as part of a joint effort between NASA and the Indian space agency. He will also be India's second national astronaut to go to space since 1984. Rakesh Sharma earned the distinction of being the first Indian to go to space on board Russia's Soyuz spacecraft in 1984. IAF Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair has been designated an astronaut, as part of the backup pilot of the Ax-4 if Group Captain Shukla is unable fly. Apart from Shukla, the Ax-4 mission also carries two mission specialists - European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary - to stay aboard the space station.
